What is the best format to use when presentinting the brief to an article writer?

Here's from my experience of countless articles written.

When hiring writers, having a Google doc file (or something similar) that you can update is crucial. Otherwise, you have to resend the instructions every time you modify something.

Regarding the information in it, there are a few things to consider:

• The overall tone of the website.
• Readability.
• Originality.
• Articles to be SEO-friendly.

You can add anything else that is important for your website. You don't need to get into too many details, and they might even make it less effective.

You don't need to educate your writer, and if you do, you got the wrong one. A very good writer can get those answers by inspecting your already-published articles, but I'd say that it saves time to have those rules written down.

What helps me when writing is to have clear and concise informations about the things I mentioned above. What is not helpful is to have a boring wall of text in which someone tries to impress me with their writing philosophy.

Imagine you pay for every word you write on that file. If what you wrote there is not important for the article development, delete it.

That is about it for the beginning. As you hire writers and notice things that don't get written in the way you want it, add them as new rules to that file. At some point, you are going to have perfect instructions for your articles.

Regarding the articles individually, if you are picky about what information the articles should contain, send an outline with subheadings. But generally speaking, an article writer should have much more experience than you at coming up with an article structure.

My favorite clients are those that let me do my job and let me use my experience. You don't hire a doctor and tell them how to treat you, so why would you try to shackle the quality of an article with your lack of experience? Leaving this aside, clear instructions help with the article development, but they are not necessary.

A good writer always researches the client's website for all the details they need. But that doesn't mean you can't be precise about what you want if you wish to.

The worst thing that you can do when hiring a freelance writer is to consider that you know better than that writer. That will keep good writers away from you and you will only find awful writers that don't mind being told everything they need to do and think because all they care about is your money.

The best thing you can do is to hire a writer with a ton of experience when you come up with your first plan for articles. No one will know better what is good for your readers and Google than that person.

But if you insist on doing the guidelines yourself, make sure to read plenty of guides on article writing first.

The ideas I mentioned are easy, but it's hard to make the connection between those rules and what your website needs. That involves many things, including but not limited to audience research, niche review, SEO experience and competitor profiling.

I think the topic and the key word are vital. Also explain what the article intends to achieve.

I would only add one thing - Tell them who your intended audience is. If you already have a lot of content on your site/blog this should be obvious. But if you're just starting out then it's an important part of how the article should be written.

Thank you all, I have been able to put together a good template, I was close in what I was doing but this just makes it better.

Takes me back in a way, to when there seemed to be more real people helping real people, might be that the warrior forum still has a heart beat bubbling away underneath the surface.

I am saying this from my experience of dealing with a team writers on a day to day basis.

We have created Google doc and then write in that.

We have asked them to use a plugin of SEMrush readability checker which check the readability of the content in the real time and the writer can adjust his or her style.


We tell them the topic as well as sub topics and give them flexible word limits for each section though we urge them to do justice with the topic and they can ignore the word limit.


Besides, we also give them a bunch of long tail keywords so that they can fit it naturally in the article.



We also tell the the kind of in-depth research we want, whether we want images or not, who are the target audience etc and where it will be placed.

I saw the answers and... few are like...... complete wiki page lol! You don't need to bang your head to make your article writer understand what you want. They are like people with small direction, capable to write whole story. But yes, if you are not dealing with idiots then these points are sufficient:
1. Ask them to write something like a code word which you must have placed in between the whole description to know if they read the whole description carefully.
2. Give keywords, if you need.
3. Ask for plagiarism report.
4.Tell them to bold what you think should not be missed.
