Struggling to market a product to marketers?

Hi all,

I'm in the stage of validating a project that can be great for marketers who advertise online. One of my drawbacks is getting the target audience's attention.

What techniques would you apply for getting the marketer's attention (since this a marketing forum)?

Thank you.

You will need to take massive action, content production, advertising, multi-channel promotion, etc to get attention in this hotly competitive arena.

Not necessarily, depends on the product and on the target audience I would say.

George, how exactly would you show that? If I understood correctly, the author is talking about a new product. I doubt they would have the best practices or real positive reviews from clients.

They may be just a team of programmers who saw an opportunity and decided to go for it. They may not know how to market stuff. This is exactly how it is on the project that I joined a couple of months ago. In fact, most of the small businesses that I worked with knew close to 0 when it comes to promoting or marketing products. In order to gain this invaluable knowledge one actually needs to be doing it over and over.

Before giving any advice, I would ask you what sort of product are you trying to market. At least what niche? Which market do you target? I mean which country? What sort of benefits do marketers get from it? There isn't one general approach that will work for everything. If you believe in your product you may want to try Linkedin for reaching out to the right people or FB. But I would outsource the task to someone experienced rather than doing it yourself.

  • Assuming, you've found the 'right' audience, you could use an 'army' to assist you.
The 'army' or 'Affiliate' marketers would prove to be very profitable for you..under the right conditions.
They can be found on Affiliate Networks like Clickback (of course), JVZoo, Shareless... the usual(s).

    hope this helps

So basically you need traffic, correct?
Do your project have a website?

There are plenty of ways to get traffic, you need to decide if you want to start with a free traffic method or paid ones, or maybe start with both.

Free could be SEO (it takes too long and it takes money to rank your website to get any traffic, so its not free in the beginning), you could try to advertise on targeted facebook groups, reddit subreddits, you can create a youtube video.

Paid traffic sources are facebook ads, google ads, pinterest ads.

If you are looking to validate the product/tool, you need people to try it out and give feedback. Sharing it in some Facebook groups asking for beta testers, for example in exchange for free access, can be a great way to validate + get feedback.

    Heh "take massive action"

Terrible, unfocused newbie advice from newbies for newbies.

Better than doing nothing, I suppose...but exhausting and you're never sure what worked. So how could you duplicate your success, even if you got some?

    Look--

Your issue is that you don't know how to get the attention of your target market.

The reason WHY, which you don't know until I explain it to you, is that what YOU think is important is not what THEY think is important.

So there you are, maybe "Taking Massive Action", jumping up and down hollering and beating your chest about the technical features of whatever this is...

...and your ideal customer is busy with their own stuff. They have survived until now without you.

Your job is to find out what they DO care about in relation to your offer. In their words, not yours. Not what you IMAGINE they value: what they DO actually value.

    How?

    Do some information interviews.

Now * here's * where to put some of that Massive Action to work.

Persist and don't stop until you've talked to at least 10 ideal prospective customers.

    Here's what to say:

"Hi NAME, I'd like to get your take on something. I made this cool thing that I believe will be super useful for marketers like you who advertise online, but it doesn't really matter what I believe. I'm much more interested in discovering what * you * believe.

Would you be willing to have a look at this thing with me for a few minutes, and give me your reaction?"

Some people will be too busy to help their own mother. Don't worry about them not replying.

Some people will be really heavy on the WIIFM. Don't worry about them, either. (Some will want to know if you can give them an advantage, and so will reply to you.)

Some people will just generally be nice, and want to help. They'll reply.

You must send at least 50 of these to get 10 replies. Maybe 100. But the feedback will be well worth it.

Do it live as a walkthrough on Zoom if you can. Don't try to get them to fill out a survey by email: they'll never have the time to get back to you. Use the message to book a live appointment.

When you hear or read two or more replies saying the same thing, probably even in the identical words, then you know you have something.

You lift that pain point out and drop it right into your copy.

    Here's a quick example I have handy:

I have highlighted the relevant portions. The buyer-reader has told us exactly what his painful situation was, and why he picked and liked this particular solution.

Can you see how easy it is to lift and drop these lines into sales copy?

By the way, I don't know if you're a SaaS founder, but SaaS founders have been struggling with this very thing for decades. I've written about it extensively on my blog, and interviewed tons of founders and SaaS salespeople, who will tell you the same. You're not alone. The "you're a marketer who doesn't know how to market?" snerk? Meh. Commonplace. Nothing to be ashamed about. Learning your target market is a necessity for EVERYONE including me...and I've been a well paid copywriter for 25 years.

What counts for forums is that they need to be authoritative educative and reliable. If you can ensure this is done, it will market itself.

    What George Troy said.

Hey I liked your youtube video about market research.

What strikes me as odd is that people don't do a research.

Then they blame it on the rain for the money they've shoved down the drain.

Wait you're creating a product for marketers, but you don't know how to market? That's an oxymoron

So what exactly are you going do to influence them into buying your product? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

You have to know your market, and create that Know, Like and Trust factor. It seems like you are putting the cart before the horse.

You are trying to find out how to market to marketers, by other markers on this forum, so you can create your product to sell to us?

First learn the skills to market and then and only then create your product .

Just my thoughts on the matter...
