A wannabee domainer strikes gold!

I'm happy to share a good story in this era of riots and a pandemic. I've been a domainer for years, somewhere close to 20 years. I've developed a lot of websites for real estate, insurance and various news sites. I've struggled to eek out a living like many small time wannabee domainer and website developers with little cash. I've taken other jobs and been in other businesses to pay the bills.

I have a small portfolio of names by comparison to the large domainers who make their full time livings off buying and selling domain names. I've sold dozens of names over the years without striking gold! But a funny thing happened to me just a little more than a week ago. I found a perfect match for a website that I had already developed, TVVideoNews.com and I registered it at Godaddy for the regular initial registration fee. As a wannabee domainer, I hit gold! See this domain name had dropped, which is domainer parlance for the owner of the domain not paying the renewal fee. It had been registered for 16 years, according to domain history records.

It just goes to prove that if you look hard enough and work hard enough you can still get a great domain name without sometimes paying out the big bucks. The value of domain names has risen phenomenally and I expect despite economic woes will continue to do so at perhaps even higher elevated heights. Notice how many new ecommerce sites are hitting the web?

Like many people in the current environment, money is tight for us and putting out a sizeable chunk of cash for a domain these days in the re-sale market would have been unlikely. I'm happy to share my good luck story. As a wannabee domainer I struck gold. Maybe you can too!

I'm not a domainer - so admit to some confusion on this one. What 'gold' did you strike? Are you referring to the potential of this domain?

You mention the domain had been registered for 16 years - but wayback machine records show it was parked and for sale on godaddy in recent years. Is that incorrect?

Yes, a dropped domain is one the registrant decided not to renew for another term...could it be the person was unable to sell the domain so let registration expire?

I think I'm too skeptical to be a good domainer - good luck with it.

Hi Kay: Thanks for the message. The gold I refer to isn't just the potential of the name but that the three keywords in it naturally attract traffic for what users are searching for on the web. Yes it was dropped and it was previously for sale as the wonderful Wayback machine shows. And yes the former owner let it expire. Thank God!

I have a problem with the statement, "three keywords in it naturally attract traffic for what users are searching for on the web." Nothing about keywords in a domain "naturally attract traffic". Keywords play zero role in ranking, so they, alone, cannot possibly attract more traffic. Marketing and rankings create traffic.

Sure, it's a good domain name but it is "dirt" until you find someone to buy it who thinks it is worth "gold". Right now, it's only worth what you paid for it until you sell it to someone who thinks otherwise. I wish you the best of luck finding that person. :-)

Let me get this straight. You got several offers in the five figure range... and you turned them down because you expect to get more than five figures in revenue from natural traffic?

        Not making any sense.

Edit: I can't tell if you are geniuely excited about the potential "gold" - which I don't see.... or if you are hoping someone on the forum offers to buy it from you.

I am pretty sure if the domain was a gold nugget the original owner would not have let it expire

As someone who has been creating and selling websites for last few months, it doesn't seem to me a great domain but maybe someone who has other ideas and willing to pay thousands for the great Gold domain is around the corner. Keep looking

Thanks for the replies folks. FYI- We have received several offers during the short time we've owned the name in the low five figure range but have no intention of selling it any time soon. We'll continue to build the site up to be what it should be -- a great TV Video News site.

Have a great Covid free summer!

No offence, this is total bs. The site has no traffic, is valued lowly by GoValue and has very low domain authority.

I really do not believe at all that you had any offers in any range. Really.

To be honest, everyone who buys a domain name thinks they've struck gold. That's the problem why so many domains are stuck with the original buyer. They can never find a buyer because of their high expectations.

Did the offers ask you to get an appraisal?

Some marketers will look for domains that have expired and buy them. Then they can take that domain name and forward it to their website or funnel or what ever.

    I think it's a good strategy.

Let us know how it works out for you.

Thanks for the comments. Talfighel the site is gaining traffic very nicely almost every day as we add more and more content. Old domain names are useful Medon to add traffic. This tactic is applied by many domainers and many large corporations. .. for example search mortgage.com to see where it goes.
    Good luck!

So you're receiving low five figure offers for an awful templated Wordpress site with no traffic, no unique or even original content, potting along by the grace of a free autoblogging plugin that embeds videos from YouTube? People here could put something like this together in ten minutes.
