Could Warriors Effectively Crack "Trending Topics" on Twitter?

I'm curious if all of us banded together with some crazy viral idea, on some specific day and time, do you thing we could crack into the top 10 of Twitter's Trending Topics?

I know it would take a massive amount of chatter to get in the top 10, but if all of us collectively tweeted at the same time, and had sort of a agenda, I really wonder if we could crack into the top 10?

Just a silly idea, but who knows. We got enough smart people in here that we could come up with some hashtag idea or spread some rumor about P-Diddy or something.

Ya know?

Think we could collectively crack the top 10?

Oh by the way, I just was curious about this for bragging rights. I hadn't even thought about making money from it, nor do I really care much about that part.

Why is this in the main forum then....and not the OT forum? We talk about making money here....

        Ken,

Many marketers use Twitter to further their aims.

Granted, as an exercise, it doesn't seem to fit on the main forum--initially.

Looking at it a a bit more broadly... understanding what it takes to make something "go viral"--every marketer's dream--is very useful and does fit!

        Respectfully,

    How's about #IWouldTwitFor...
It's a blank space and could get viral because
well... anyone can fill in the space with it.

If it's just a fun project, why not?

    =)

(In your case, you might have
    #IWouldTwitFor Sh*t )

    Good idea Asher,

Hey J-Mo, I thought you were on a World Tour or something.

Cracking the top 10 in Twitter? That's a lofty goal, dude. I'd be willing to jump in and help, but I don't know if its possible with all the Media going on out there.

Since it is Allen's forum we are discussing it on, why not have it somehow link back here, or be related to the WF?

That's what I was thinking at first.

But truth be told, most of the rest of the world could care less about us marketers. It's very tough to get anything marketing related to be viral. Not impossible, but very very hard.

If we made the topic something really off the wall, the curiosity and "me too" factor could kick in enough to push it over. We start it off by getting all our lists to start Tweeting on the same day. Next, Twitterers see this bizarre hashtag again and again, so they start jumping in on it.

this sounds like fun! but really difficult... we'd have to set a time where everyone starts using the hashtag at the same time...

we could support a good cause/charity to raise awareness... for the holidays? toys for tots?

I don't even use Twitter, so I might be completely off-base here, but I'd think that if you were gonna do something like this, you need to get people involved - esp if they can alter it somehow. Make it a game.

    Quick (and maybe stupid) example:

A few years back, a buddy of mine started a thread on an off-topic subforum of a martial arts forum I frequent. It was titled "let's play a game", and the idea was that you had to post a 3-5 word phrase (something that made sense, and preferably something relatively well-known). The catch was that the last word of one post had to be the first word of the next post. And so on.

People caught on and got into it, and IIRC, it was actually (at the time) the longest ever thread in the history of the entire forum, and was the first thread ever to go 1000+ posts.

My point is that if you people can participate in it somehow w/their own little opinion, joke, or whatever, (I think) they're more likely to want to contribute.

But then again, like I say, I don't even use Twitter, so what do I know? LOL.

I think if you try to attach this thing to any agenda, charity, or anything like that people won't take part in it enough to crack the top ten.

I'm thinking the easiest way would be something like...

    #ishot

    or #ihaveacrushon

    or #biggesttoolintheshed

stuff like that. I dunno though.

      Interesting idea, Jason.

      How about something like "#Itweetbecause..."

This example would provide tweeters the opportunity to use any reason they care about, or even on the spur of the moment think of, to fill out the tweet.

The hashtag, including the ellipsis is 17 characters. Most experienced tweeters can say a lot in the remaining 123 characters.

As to whether we could bust in to the trending topics, who knows?

Another question: Which would have more impact, a quick, concentrated burst of tweets or a continual stream over the course of a day?

Count me in once it's figured out.

Is there a tool out there that shows the top 100 tweeted items instead of just the top ten?

That would be a bit helpful to know how much leverage you would really need.

Something like I tweet for... would probably be the best bet, but it would also be pretty easy (comparatively lol, this isn't an easy feat anyway/anyhow, don't get me wrong). IMO for anyone (outside of marketing maybe) to care you / the Warrior Forum / whatever got something to the top 10, it would need to be something more challenging or worthwhile -- like a charity like some people suggested. But that's just my take.

Anyway, I'm down for helping whatever you decide on.

The best viral thing is something that's funny,
in my opinion. Motivational, shocking, dramatic,
etc... all falls second place to funny.

Because people's lives are boring and they
      desperately need some entertainment (quote
stolen and rehashed from some guru).

Based on the enthusiasm level we have here,
this project might only have a handful of people
working together. Not sure if that's going to
be enough to create a trending topic.

I just figured out how hard it would be to rank in the top ten.

All you have to do is type in one of the "trending topics" into the search bar. Every minute or so you'll see a message pop up that says.... "242 new tweets" (or something like that).

If you do this you'll notice there is massive volume of tweets about these phrases.

It would be damn hard to get in top ten unless it was something really funny, and we all hit our lists at the same time.

Obviously this is going to do wonders for all of our businesses

    Hi JMO,
I think it could be done, but you would need a Warrior Special Forces Team or SWAT team to initiate it and put it all into play. It would need to be set up ahead of time. Sadly, it would have to probably be something known, but death related. For example, Patrick Swazye has pancreatic cancer. It's terminal, you know he is going to most likely die from it in "x" amount of months. You set up your "death watch" warrior network and when he actually passes, the hash tag, RT twitter campaign takes place immediately. Now his name is going to be trending anyway, but if you come up with the most powerful power phrase that hits the hot buttons of his fans, I'm pretty sure you will reach your goal of the trending top ten. Speculation of course on my part, but doable I do believe. RIP Patrick Swazye BTW.

Agree with George. I can be done, but would require the coordinated effort of a core group that would be the "sneezers" that got the initial push going.

Not really any different than any major PR push.

    It's how Obama got elected.

    Hi Everyone,

You'd definitely need to plan it ahead of time.

    And for everyone involved...

I would suggest doing it during peak hours on Twitter. Make the Tweets easy for users to RT. And create a bunch of pre-written tweets and set them up to auto tweet from a service like FutureTweets.com or TwitUsers.com (in beta). Maybe set up an auto tweet every 3 minutes or so.

Then everyone in the group could RT eachother's tweets.

And be sure every tweet from everyone involved has the main hastag or keyword in every tweet.

The ideas above were discussed over a phone conversation with my friend Bill Platt a few months ago (I want to make sure I give proper credit). Bill is a credible person and trust and is actually the owner of TwitUsers.com

    I hope this has helped.

    Sincerely,
    Eric Bonnici

    Hey Uncle Mofo, hello warriors!

    how about this..

#WhatIwantForXmas is my two front teeth and a lot of cash from santa! Lol how about you? RT and Use Hashtag

It's kinda an actual tweet I sent earlier..

By the way I like seeing warriors on Twitter..If it's warrior related maybe we could start from there..like..

    #WarriorBrothers Yes I'm a warrior <CLOWN or ANYTHING> and a part of WarriorForum!

This I would want to see in Twitter so all I'll have to do to see the warriors in Twitter is to search for the hashtag...

    All the best,
