I've heard good things about Patreon, but their fees seem pretty high. (Worth it?)

What's the best platform to use for a monthly subscription blog?

Also: I'm nervous about getting censored by the platform, and I would like to avoid this. Hoping to find a free-speech friendly platform.

    To avoid censoring you could always self-host. WordPress and one of the many membership plugins should be all that you need. The con is that there is no in-built traffic but you control everything.

    I'd suggest investigating Substack as well. Simple model that only makes money if/when you do. (People like Azeem Azhar and David Perell have published good rationales for why they utilize it, if you want to read further in depth...)

      to add to this - found this Benedict Evans breakdown helpful. It all depends on you audience and desire to control different elements of the subscription.

      -Substack charges 10%, handles everything and may bring a network - but that means they have control, not you

      -Memberful plugs into your existing site & charges 5%

      -Ghost is a flat $80/month but you WILL need a developer

      -And, Stripe adds ~3% to all of the above.

    How much free speech do you need? I mean we all want free speech but if we take it too far, we can get shutdown even by private hosting.

    I currently use WP + WP eMember plugin.
