A new article on Search Engine Land says that when working with clients, you should make sure you have everything you need for effective communication to build lasting relationships.

One of the most challenging aspects of providing SEO services is proving the value of your work to clients. To address this problem, SE Ranking sat down with representatives of both digital agencies and businesses from the US, UK and Australia to discuss the main issues that occur in the communication between agencies and their clients and to find reasonable solutions for them. This article highlights actionable insights and useful advice shared during the discussion.

Clients often don't fully understand all of the nuances and value of SEO. As a result, you will have a hard time finding an SEO contractor who hasn't been asked multiple times why it takes so long to produce results. Here are a few things you can do to relieve the anxiety of your clients and build trust from day one:
  • Set clear expectations. As soon as you start working with a client, let them know what results you can help them achieve. Give them a clear idea of what's ahead by providing projections on what results they can see in 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.
  • Communicate with and educate clients. Make sure to spend enough time explaining to clients that SEO is a massive field with many moving parts where each part needs a different amount of time and effort to produce results. Besides talking to clients, build a good rapport with their in-house teams too, and make sure they're also on the same page.
  • Provide interim results. Your clients must be able to see actual progress as soon as possible. Alleviate their concerns by showing specific progress that's been made since you started optimizing their website.

I think it also has to be noted that if a client doesn't want to listen and understand what SEO is, it might not be a good idea to get that client. They're the ones who will NEVER be happy with the results, no matter how much they're paying you. These are the clients that expect miracles simply because they're paying for SEO.

Yeah, SEO is hard to communicate between services to clients. Graphic designs and illustrations are a lot easier to talk about because they can easily say if their satisfied or not but SEO is more about foresight than present state.

Thanks for sharing, I liked the concept of "educating" getting your clients to understand all the work behind it to obtain good results and meet their expectations is a great challenge.

    Kind Regards

I totally agree with this article, and from my personal experience can confirm that a good relationship with clients is something that is sometimes so challenging to keep. Because of that I would say that defining the clear set of expectations is crucial step in the beginning of mutual cooperation, as without this, we can have many problems as clients will expect something that we can't deliver or in some impossible deadlines. Also, for clients to stay more calm and to keep the work transparent, it's highly recommendable that everything is being regularly reported so that clients now what we are doing and what are our plans for the following period.
