Pulling in Articles from Other Sites

How do I pull in articles to a blog from other sites? I mean specific sites I'd like to grab them from, with all the backlinks and everything, of course.

I suppose you mean with an automatic process, right? Software?

Every day I check the obituaries. If I don't see my name there, then I know it's going to be a good day!

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. I have a news site and would like to get other articles in there. I can only write so many myself.

My site is quite popular, but it's tough keeping it up to date when I have to work as well. And I only run that site as a hobby rather than a business.

      It's a wordpress site.

There are various different plugins for WordPress that do this. However, take into consideration that most sites aren't okay with their content being scraped and reposted. Some sites are cool with it as long as you attribute the original URL prominently, but others aren't and your host could potentially receive a DMCA takedown notice from the site you are scraping from.

Different hosts handle DMCAs differently, but some will deactivate your account on the spot. Others will take your account down until you have informed them (usually in writing) that the content that was targeted in the DMCA has been taken offline. Having to deal with downtime due to a DMCA isn't fun, so you may want to think twice about scraping.

If you have a popular site, it very well may be popular because you provide your users with great content. If the great content dries up, so may your visitors. It may not be worth risking the site's current success to take the easy way out.

    Just my .02

EDIT: ... though I completely understand and can appreciate wanting to lessen your workload.

EDIT #2: I was assuming the sites that you were thinking of pulling content from wouldn't be article directories, as outlined by gsport11 in the post below mine.

There are article directories (eg., ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com, a1articles.com, etc.). They have simple guidelines for reprinting their articles.

Some article distribution consortiums exist at which you can get "spun" articles in a variety of niches. Some examples are MyArticleNetwork.com, AMA, UAW, etc.

MyArticleNetwork could be a good fit. You can sign up to get articles for free and let them know whether or not you want to review the articles before they are published on your site or not.

My site is a news site so I need to pull in articles from other big news sites on a daily basis. Is there a plugin for wordpress which can do that?

It's got to be current events.

Yes, there is a program called Caffeinated Content (I think). That should do the trick. Just make sure you give the authors credit!

WP Robot has a free articles poster and a paid version. It pulls from ArticlesBase.

BJC computer services has a free articles poster. It pulls from Isnare.

Do those programs allow you to review the articles first, or do they just pull straight from the RSS and publish on your site?

The reason I ask is that even these supposed "quality" article repositories publish a bunch of trash.

My concern would be spending the time and money on one of these programs only to end up with automated publishing of crap on my quality website.

What I'm after is something whereby I can put in the URLs of the specific sites I want articles from so it pulls in the articles every day from there only. Is that possible?

You can pull in news feeds from Google and Yahoo readily enough and that can be keyword based to provide information on a particular topic. This tends to provide snippets and there is a link in each snippet that goes to the original source, such as a newspaper.

If that is what you want, just Google "Google news" and "Yahoo News" and look for the keyword based RSS feed.

Something similar is possible with syndicate sources like Syndic8. They can provide a feed from other websites. Or you can go to a particular website that interests you and look for an RSS feed.

Can I get these feeds to show up on my blog automatically and, if so, which plugin do I need for that?

I think you can just add the default RSS widget in your blog and then enter a news rss feed from someone like the BBC?

Caffeinated Content plugin is pretty good, but it has a few little bugs and there`s no customer service at all.

You might want to try FirePow. It does a whole lot more than just pulling content.

If you just want to parse an RSS feed and get it on your site, try one of the free sevices listed by Ivan. Also try Magpie or RSS2HTML. All free,

I've only been doing it for a week or so but I'm currently pulling articles from ArticlesBase.com every day.

I bought a WSO that scrapes articles via your chosen keywords and keeps the bio box in tact and leaves a link back to the original.

I'm basically using it on domains that I plan to develop later on down the track, just so that when I start to I will already have an established blog and I won't be starting entirely from scratch.

I've already noticed a little bit of traffic from Google come in to each site, also!

Anyone compared WP Robot to Automatic Blog? Both apparently pull articles from article directories based on keywords but there is a significant price difference.

Like Pat, I would like something like this to populate some domains I have until I can give them more attention.
