URL Translation Question

Hi all!

I have a question in regards to URL translation.

I have a website. Website.com and then subdomains website.com/fr-fr, website.com/es-es.

Am I supposed to translate or can I translate the URL for them to target the relevant keywords in each language?

For example website.com/hello-product, website.com/fr-fr/bonjour-produit.

    A very interesting question.. a smart question no less.

    I say - and I think for those that deal with this on an amount of regular basis it is "Best Practive" to translate the url's.

    Looking at this from another perspective UX ( User Experience ) having the URL in the native language that you are trying to reach ( as in your last example ) is a far better UX than unilaterally using English.

    My own personal experience with this is to create language specific content with languageg specific URL's.

    My gut reaction to urls in a language other than the one I searched in is: Run! Hijackers!


    I would translate for that reason alone.


    I mean, avoid being perceived as a hijacked site.


    You will be losing credibility even with some of the people more trusting than me.


    Plus, it makes analytics easier, no?

      There are three options... Sub-Domain, Sub-Directory, and TLD ( .com, .uk, .se )

      Something like domain.se being a TLD ( according to google ) is the Best option

      then you get into domain.com/se and the advantage here is you are passing SEO advantages across all pages of the site.

      se.domain.com gets kind of complicated.. still being seen from google as a seperate site, but doesnt carry the weight of the TLD, and doesnt pass SEO advantage across the primary domain.

      The lessor of 3 evils is to use the Sub-Directory ( domain.com/se ) you get the SEO advantages but you sacrifice the TLD level "Boost" if you will. - and that being said, if you went the separate TLD route you would more than likely be hosting them all with the same host, and Google isnt so keen on that so any gains would be negated.

      The EASIEST... and the overall most beneficial for someone starting out would be the sub-directory route ( domain.com/se ).

      atsome point you may become more andvanced in all of this and see the benefit of TLD's and hosting natively - which obviously adds expense but in the long run has greatwer benefit overall. ( my opinion )
