I'm looking for some advice and guidance on how to best monetize a project I'm working on. A bit of background on me: I'm recently retired from the construction industry after a long career in building, renovations, and hands-on work. Now, I'm turning my focus to writing as a way to share my knowledge and, hopefully, create a side income.

I had some experience online about 15 years ago when I ran a dating site. While it wasn't a serious venture, I did make a bit of money from it. That experience gave me a taste of online business, but things have evolved so much since then!

Currently, I'm writing a DIY book aimed at people who want to take on home improvement projects from a humorous perspective. I want the book to be fun but also packed with practical advice--think of it as an easy-to-read guide with a twist. I'm also considering writing blogs and perhaps creating other digital products for DIY enthusiasts. It's mostly for fun, but I'd love to monetize it if possible.
Your comments would be appreciated.
Cheers!

I think it's fantastic that you are publishing a book, but there
are thousands of books published every day so you will need
    to do more.

There are also thousands of DIY videos on YouTube that show
people how to do home repairs, renovations, etc.

Perhaps you should consider publishing a series of books,
courses, videos, and whatever else you can do to set yourself
    apart from the competition.

Monetize with sales, ads, affiliate offers and the way you
    monetized your dating site.

BTW, your sig link is broken.

The problem: hundreds of known influencers in DIY home improvement. Another book will get you lost unless it has something very different and unique and also, a book takes a lot of time to write, and writing is just the beginning, it is the selling of the book where your side income will happen.

To compete with Lindsay Dean, Chris and Julia, Joanna and Chip, etc., et al; you have to bring something new and different to the table. Maybe humor can be that IT.

I advise you test the concept, and drill down, get very niche specific and write a few specialty reports with your humor in them, to see what kind of an audience you might find. Find your market first, and test to see if people who are spending THOUSANDS of dollars on diy projects have a sense of humor about doing that.

You can turn your reports into a book, eventually, but in the meantime, try them as stand alone projects to find audience, interest and learn the basics of Internet Marketing your information; Prospect to Customer, and all that it takes to do that.

Start small, specialize, for example, The Kitchen Island King, Shaun Boyd, has a very specific topic on his Four Eyes Furniture channel.

Maybe a kitchen nook, a rec room storage area, a patio firepit, something very specific and build a family of products (reports) around that, and then bundle together for a higher priced project, and the eventual book. A short report lends itself well to short videos, blogs, web sites and it gives you time to find your voice as a writer as well get you organized for the future too.

Do you have a particular specialty? Fellow Warrior art72 is a pool guy, but also like you a general all around handy person, so he could target pool owners with a diy pool bar, or a project specific to pool owners. See?

If you come up with something specific, and then develop a "CHARACTER/MASCOT" TYPE thing, like Eddie the Eagle or Bob Beavers the damn builder...or see the Home Depot mascot...a cartoon character, sort of like Heckle Fish on THE WHY FILES. Something that makes you stand out and potential merch down the road.

So, I too applaud your ambition, and encourage you to put your knowledge to work, just bite off small chunks at a time and before you invest the time and effort to write the book, start looking for a way to enter that MARKET easily and quickly.

Specialty Reports are basically every article ever written in Popular Science, Popular Mechanics and Home Improvement magazines. Find your buyers at the start and you'll have a much better journey.

Joinery is a great place to start your book, Eric Brennan has 1.7M views on his 4 minute Youtube video; BASIC WOOD JOINERY, and has 25k subscribers to his channel.

One idea, to invoke your humor, might be to show the screw ups, the how NOT to do it. I'm sure your industry is loaded with stories of joinery FAILS, those kitchen cabinets falling off the wall or the steps breaking type thing. Come at it from an "identity", of DON'T MAKE THESE MISTAKES, giving diy ers an educated chuckle in ways to prevent being the laughing stock of the diy crowd.

Establish your voice first, and then you have a good foundation to build on, I think you have a lot of VALUE to offer, especially IF you do have a good sense of humor. Good luck.

Blogging would definitely help you raise awareness and build a community of people specifically interested in that particular subject .

You might also want to network with your targeted audiences on and offline to help speed up the process as well .

Test run a few ads before you launch so that you can est the market ,,get feed back and build up people's appetite about your book .

I call it pre- marketing to raise awareness about your product .

Back in 1907 when I was running full-page ads, life was harder...

cars were unsafe, the food was worse, and the clothes were ugly.

These days advertising is so much easier and cheaper...even free.

I try to stress this, and yet it is overlooked for some reason or another.

    It's 2024.

Stop trying to advertise to a cold market.

We're in the Social Media age. The age where everyone loves everyone and has a million friends they've never met on Facebook, etc.

    People know people.

People will tell the people they know about things that are helpful.

Learn to use referrals and you'll learn how to build a business, sell a book, or whatever these days.

Give away something if someone refers so many people.

Let your early adaptors build your business.

It really works if you use it.

There's a whole science behind referrals...use it and get rich...

or, continue to advertise to a cold market and waste a lot of money

  • DIY demands BIY.

    "Be It Yusself"

Without an extra personal twist on the screwdrivah, likely youwain't gonna say nuthin' your audience cain't already discovah.

So I see how a humor angle would invest yr smarts with storytellin' allure.

Same as Gordon Ramsay did with basic cookery ... an' bein' a c*nt.

So what is it 'bout HOW you interacted with folks durin' that "long career in building"?

This is what differentiates you from anywan forgettable else who jus' 'gaht on with the jahb.

Tech smarts & shoutout arts are a cool kinda combo in this inflooencah age.

I have NO DOUBT you could erect Moi sumthin' dinky to display muh shimmy shimmy shinies upon; mebbe you could evin make evrythin' LIGHT UP.

But likely so could Workaday Sam an' his insanely well maintained WRENCH COLLECTION.

So if'n you gonna pull this off, raise yr BIY game to match yr DIY expertise.

Really thankful for your replies....lots of information to consider and I can tell you all have a sense of humor too! great stuff!

    Lots of stories of mishaps,
When I was 16, working for my uncle, he gave me the very important task of getting rid of a load of stones from a wall we'd just demolished. Naturally, I thought I'd rig up my own "professional" ramp--a pair of ladders set up on a five-foot wall, planks on top, perfect for wheeling a barrow full of stones right up and over into a wagon on the other side.

And let me tell you, it worked...for about five minutes.

Right in the middle of one run, I put my foot down on fresh air, slipped straight through the ladder rungs, and--bam!--the planks shifted, and there I was, dangling mid-ramp, still holding onto the barrow handles like my life depended on it and the barrow wheel pointing skyward. Stones tumbled down, raining on my head, and before I knew it, I was stuck with the barrow on top of me like some ridiculous, lopsided wheelbarrow hat. Not exactly the fashion statement I had in mind! Health and safety lesson!
Got loadsof stories, other peoples woes, etc......
