I know many say that the directory business is dead.

Did not make this money by throwing up a directory on expired domains and flipping. Pure directory submissions.

The directory business is not about SEOing a directory your way to the top of the SERP's for the term "web directory". It's about effective promotion and customer service.

I promote my directories with 125x125 banner ads, email templates, and good customer service. An important element in good customer service is fast review and listng. When I review and list a quality submission within an hour, I often get additional submissions from that customer.

Do you have a list of directories that you use, do you own them, or do you use a submitter? I have only done the directory marketing one time years ago. Sounds like it does work. Will look into it more. Doesn't it cost money to submit to each directory?

if i submit to a directory people say that google doesn't like it. is that correct?
also, do they count as backlinks?
also, if i was to setup a directory could you help me?

You will never be penalized for sites that link TO you. You can't control who links to your site, so Google won't penalize you for it. Not every site out there will help you, but it certainly can't hurt.

I disagree with some exceptions. That discussion is better left for the ppc/seo sub-forum.

You may be right but personally I have not hyped anything. Never even suggested that you submit to directories.

This forum is about how to make money in IM and I'm just letting folks know that it is possible to make nice money with directory ownership.

It is mostly about how to promote the directory business. There are many that have tried to make money owning a directory and are having a hard time seeing any profit.

Mmmm....this is quite interesting. I always thought that most people would just shy away from paying for directory submissions.

But pagerank might be an issue? How do you get the directory off the ground when starting with a PR 0?

All directories start as free. It takes some time to fill-in the categories with quality site listings and to develop inbound links. Of course it helps if Google gives the site pagerank.

As a directory owner I don't like to talk about pagerank much. I am greateful for any PR I have.

  I have seen dozens of directories with Alexa rank 40k roughly.
  
  You know they are getting some decent traffic...

nice job. I really don't see how general directories are worth it? They are trying to rank for so many categories, the leads coming through would be very little.

I can see a value in niche directories with the services that you provide, many offline businesses are built on niche directories, providing their listings with real value

I'm a fan of niche directories but I mostly own general directories. It is tough to develop a customer base with niche directories. My best customers are IM'ers and SEO's. Fast reviews keep customers returning when they have a new site to promote.

By no means are directories get-rich-quick. The reason I wrote the free ebook is that there are many folks that own good directories but just have not been able to make them profitable.
