Calling Facebook Experts! How do you...

Hi Warriors,

I think people serious about promoting their businesses on FB should set up a fan page.

But if they're not ready to do that yet for whatever reason, how would you optimize your PERSONAL FB page for your business? Just doing some late-night brainstorming...

I just recently saw a 3-part webinar series on Facebook for Business Mastery course somewhere else and saw that the first class is on optimizing your personal profile for your business. I can't afford to take part in the webinar series, but it got me to thinking. How DO you optimize your personal profile for your business?

I know you can post your website link(s) in the little "About Me" box on the left-hand side beneath your photo.

You can also include business videos (thumbnails) (instead of personal videos) which would appear on the left-hand side too.

Aside from listing your business URL and e-mail address on your Info tab, how else would you optimize your personal profile for your business?

Thanks,
Michelle

This is people's problem they want to use a "social network" for a marketing platform. It is not a marketing platform and many are getting kinda of sick of the SpaMarketing that marketers do because they are told to setup a facebook fanpage...

You can do those things but if you find yourself banned you will know why, it is against facebook's TOS...

There are ways to make money on facebook but using your personal profile and fan pages are not the way to do it ..

make a page that is funny and targets your niche but like a funny side of it. say your niche is travel, you'd make a page about something funny to do with travel. then hopefully these pages will go viral and you'll get a lot of fans about your niche. then you can promote your facebook business page through that or your business website. the opportunities are endless

This is exactly what is against their TOS... Just imagine spending all that time to build up a fan page with thousands of users just to get banned at the first SpaMarketing attempt.

We are talking consumers here and not other marketers, many on facebook are not so forgiving when it comes to tricking them into thinking they are joining a "fun" fan page when in reality they are joining a marketing fan page.

There are ways to make money on facebook that does NOT break their terms but these tactics are not one of them.

        Rich Jerk,

I've seen your rant about this before.

I understand what you're saying, but...

Why don't you offer an alternative solution? It would be much more useful than just a rant.

Furthermore, there ARE ways to market via FB which wouldn't be against their TOS. I follow a few (precious few!) very successful marketers on FB and I know they're not violating FB's TOS. One that comes to mind is a viral movie. You could post a link to it. It doesn't sell ANYTHING, is very "touchy, feely" and helps build your list with the opt-in at the end.

Another way I can think of is offering a free event. And not necessarily something that's a "3 Reasons to Buy My Product" teleseminar either.

        Anyway, just some thoughts.

It's simple ... Use facebook ads, this is why they have them. OMG!! I cost money though, well you are on a 3rd party site and you must follow their rules.

Millions are being made on facebook and it has nothing to do with fan pages or nreaking any terms ...

and richjerk - you can market through it. i do it. you need to think outside the bow as with any marketing strategy. take what people do and make it your own and build on that

I have a page that has over 360,000 fans and I promote all of my other pages on it and I have had it for over a year now. I have reported spammers on my page and facebook has gone through my page to find the spammers and have given them a warning. I think this shows how serious facebook is about stopping this.

I also have pages that are blatantly breaking their tos like Win A Free iPod! And I've had mine for over 3 months.

    Explain that.

You just have been lucky and not reported yet ... But like most thing marketers try to ruin it for everyone else with SpaMarketing, facebook will crack down when they start getting too many reports.

I know many that have been shut down already...

So do I but if you are careful then they can't track you.

@MrLink - Facebook has cracked down and you can't use the old 3 step method anymore. Check your page.

Can you not just post a link to an external page that has the offers? Something like "Hey I found this page that has a free laptop drawing, check it out:http://blablabla.com" or something like that? Since you are not directly making the offer, it does not violate Facebook TOS.

It truly amazes me how marketers try so hard to get around TOS when they have actual opportunities right in front of them that do not break the TOS...

Simply amazing.... Seriously, how many of you would also hype and lie to make a sale ???

        James

P.S. If the offer is "yours" you are still breaking the tos...

Actually as an active facebook user I do not think it is right to mislead newsbies into using a for marketing when it is breaking the terms.. I am actually surprised this thread is still here and that WSO selling the html for a fanpage which is obviously telling people to break the tos.

I am not here to hand everything to you on a silver platter... Think a bit and you would realize that facebook can be used in the proper way without breaking any terms.

Maybe go read the terms, it is spelled out right there how to make money on facebook ...

Referring people to a link does not constitute making an offer. If you read the tos it specifically limits the restriction to activities ON FACEBOOK.
You will not offer any contest, giveaway, or sweepstakes ("promotion") on Facebook without our prior written consent. If we consent, you take full responsibility for the promotion, and will follow our Promotions Guidelines and all applicable laws.
As I described it, the offer is not made ON FACEBOOK it's made entirely external to it and thus well within TOS.

I certainly didn't mean to start an argument!

I'm not a Facebook expert, but Mari Smith, who IS a FB expert, teaches business owners how to use FB for business. I'm sure she keeps it within their TOS. It's my understanding that Fan Pages ARE for businesses, so even if you're not supposed to do any promoting on your personal page, you can do it on your fan page.

I prefer to call it vigorous discussion, and I think it's beneficial for all to see multiple sides of an issue.

Fanpages are for "BUSINESS", you can share your business and products.. Not use facebook for Internet Marketing. This means places like Sears, janes sporting goods, Dillards, and etc.. "REAL BUSINESS".

They are not made for internet marketers to spam a bunch of internet marketing junk and cpa, and affiliate links.

This is clearly in the TOS...

Hey Freshmaker, if I have a Facebook fan page about something funny but not necessarily about any specific product, like one of those "I hate it when this or that happens" or something along those lines, and it goes sort of viral like has 50k+ members or something, what can you do to monetize something like that?

I am no expert, not even close, barely got a website built this week. I do know that I have a few internet marketers as friends and I usually end up hiding their posts as they pollute my wall with all kinds of offers.

I look at facebook as a stage. I guess it depends on your niche though, lets say I was promoting flirting. Facebook would be my stage where I lead by example, and build trust and a following. It may be the long road, but I sure have a good time doing it. When I get my following where it needs to be, then I release my own product on.... say flirting. I also create groups on the topics and let them grow as well. Maybe I am all wrong in my approach, but my philosophy is long term satisfaction as opposed to instant gratification.

Yes I am new at this. Go easy on me please.
