Why is it so much easier to rank at Yahoo? Getting to page 1 seems easy... but for the same domain/keywords; my page is buried in pages 2+ at google... no matter how much content I add

Anyone else experience this?

I want traffic from both!

Yahoo and Google follow different algorithms to crawl, index and rank a webpage. Follow the guidelines designed by each of these search engines which can help you get faster ranking. For this use Yahoo help central and Google webmaster Central

Google is much harder to deal with than any other search engines algorithm

I think that it is a lot easier to get free listings in Google and MSN.com then Yahoo. I always get traffic from both but never from Yahoo.

Look at Bing. Many 55+ yr old people grew up with MSN and Bing is their 1st search. Especially medical niches which older folk search more than young folk.

Also Bing will be taking over Yahoo search in the near future so enjoy the benefit of Yahoo search's placement while it lasts.

If you build a lot of backlinks, you can get good rankings in Yahoo almost immediately. But to rank in Google is more difficult, you cannot just hope to rank merely with backlinks.
About 70% of searches are done on Google and Yahoo is about 20% or so, hence even if you get a high rank in Yahoo does not mean you will get a lot of traffic.

I don't know much about Yahoo's algorithms (you never really "know" about those anyway), but I do believe that your site age is a major google consideration. As mentioned above, I think it is true for backlinks not being as important with google.

    Content IS king at google.

For me I don't see a consistent pattern. Using only keywords that get to Google's page 1 position, very few of them do show up on Yahoo's page 1. But the good thing is that while some of my new sites get the Google sandbox, I still get some traffic from Yahoo for those sites showing up on Yahoo page 1.

Seems of late that google is ranking sites more on page loading times and web 2.0 design, or so I've heard.

Do you think they're less reliant on the amount of content and age now?

You have to be careful with generalizing so quickly. One example is hardly enough evidence to conclude that its easier to rank in Yahoo compared to Google.

I find that my new sites will show up on top in Yahoo - for awhile. As I build unique quality content and backlinks my sites will rise in Google and many times drop to page 10 in Yahoo.

I think Yahoo is the most backwards search engine there is. For all the sites I've had rank well in Yahoo (even #1) there wasn't that much traffic. If I have a site that ranks #3 on Yahoo and #15 on Google for a keyword, I seem to get 2x as much traffic from Google (and that's page 2!)

As a side note, Bing is starting to deliver quality traffic.

I'll have to use it more.

I tried it a few months ago and hated the results it gave ...
