how do i find out who owns a domain?????

Hey!

I want to get this specific domain and currently there's no website up for it. however, the domain has been taken and I can't get any info on who owns it.

I went to a Who-Is search and this is what came up:

Registrant:
Domains by Proxy, Inc.

Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (Browser Update Page)
Domain Name: HEALTHYHAPPYLIVING.COM

Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.AFTERNIC.COM
NS2.AFTERNIC.COM

For complete domain details go to:
WhoIs Search Results

The previous information has been obtained either directly from the registrant or a registrar of the domain name other than Network Solutions. Network Solutions, therefore, does not guarantee its accuracy or completeness.

Show underlying registry data for this record

Current Registrar: GODADDY.COM, INC.
Record Type: Domain Name
Server Type: Apache 2
Lock Status: clientDeleteProhibited
WebSite Status: Active
DMOZ no listings
Y! Directory: see listings
Secure: No
Ecommerce: No
Traffic Ranking: Not available
Data as of: 22-Apr-2008
Does that mean Godaddy owns it? If so, do I have to use their $70 + commissions service to try to buy it?

Any help on this would be great.....

Thanks!!!
Rebecca

  • It means that the domain was registered through godaddy. You will need to use godaddy's search to get the details:

    WhoIs Search Results

It appears however this person has requested an 'anonymous' registration, so you would need to send an e-mail here: HEALTHYHAPPYLIVING.COM@domainsbyproxy.com

This is what I get when I search for that domain. It looks like the owner is using a privacy service. You can contact them with the info below if you are looking to negotiate a purchase:

The domain has privacy enabled. Unfortunately, the only way to know who owns the domain is to send an email to the address listed in the Whois.

If you want to know past Whois history, you can get a free DomainTools.com account and look it up

Yea, just email the whois guard email address that is there. It will forward the email to whoever owns the domain with the private whois. I would word the email in a way that there is a benefit to whoever owns the domain to reply to you. So let them know you are very interested in purchasing there domain and would like to speak to them. If not they may not reply. If they don't reply you can try calling godaddy and they may be able to help you. Some people don't forward there whois guard to a main email address that they check and your email may not get to them.

As other warriors said here, the only thing you can do is try to find the contact information, via the Whois method. However, I have to warn you Rebecca, be ready to dish out serious cash if your really want that domain name. I have heard of instances in which people were so desperate to find the domain owner (who happened to have the privacy enabled) that ended up spending hundreds of dollars, even thousands. Of course, this was years ago when Godaddy was just becoming the Big Shot it is today. People would buy domain names and then would try to negotiate horrendous prices through GoDaddy. I hope you do not go through anything similar. Good luck in your search.

If that person doesn't respond to that email (if its an email they don't use) then is there another way?

Please do check the whois information in 2 or 3 sites. I checked the whois information of HEALTHYHAPPYLIVING.COM at whoisxy.com and found the address and fax number. You can use any of these two details to contact the owner.

I thought the reason you paid for whois privacy was to prevent people from contacting you...

I have a feeling if someone wanted to sell a domain, they would not hide their contact info.

I personally don't like it at all when I set up something for my privacy and people insist on getting around that. Something to think about...

With respect, Kurt, that isn't always the case at all.

Many people (I'm one of them) pay for privacy to prevent other people from knowing their identities, rather than because of not wanting to be contacted. One doesn't necessarily follow from the other at all. It's easily possible that someone might want anonymity (i.e. of the pen-name type, though the only way one can buy a domain that way is by using a privacy protection service) and still welcome correspondence.

I don't want people to be able to work out what my niches/sites are, but I wouldn't be averse to someone contacting me (without knowing my identity) with an offer to buy a domain, and would decide for myself whether or not to reply to them and reveal my identity for that purpose.

There's a big difference between "wanting to sell" and "being open to looking at an unexpected offer", I think. This has, in fact, happened to me several times.

Nothing to worry about. The person above you (who might be gone soon) was just advertising their own website. The info you get through it is just the standard whois info.

It only prevents them from contacting you directly. ICANN requires all domains to have up-to-date contact information on file at all times. If this contact information proves to be false, the domain can be outright seized by a challenger.

You can contact to its registrar i.e. godaddy.com. They can help you in this matter, because they contain complete contact details for every registered domain
