INTERNET MARKETING

The Social Media Toolkit (SMT), is an open source platform designed to help organizations run community-driven, topic-based and geo-centric news websites, similar to NewsCloud.com, albeit simpler and more streamlined.

It's very early days as this is an Alpha release and it's
not currently for commercial use.

However, I think this has great potential for creating
niche based sites that will engage your target audience
and get them talking.

I can see it being used to..

Build communities
Gather niche data
Organise information centrally
Establish an authority site
Interact with your target audience

I'll certainly be monitoring this as it moves into Beta
release stage; and I'll probably set up a test site to
assess it's real potential.

John, did you find the license or terms of use? If yes, maybe post the link. If it's not good for commercial sites we might waste our time.

  "During the test period, the SMT is restricted to approved clouds. If you would like to propose a new topic related to your organization or are interested in using the SMT for commercial purposes, please email us."

  As I said above, I intend to monitor this. The alpha stage of
  testing is too early to make any concrete plans. However, I
  do think it has enormous potential for niche marketers to use
  social media to build a bigger presence in their specific niche

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for dropping in!

I think it's early days with SMT, but I'd be interested
in developing a social media site at some point in the
future.

Possibly based around the self improvement niche, but
I'm not sure how I would plan to monetise such a site
yet.

I suppose it depends how you define "commercial". For
example would you consider a site that is integrated
with Adsense a commercial site?

  Thanks John. By commercial, I mean that their sole purpose is profit. I expect non-commercial sites to integrate ads as well.
  
  I would be glad to work with folks who want to try out the SMT - but I have no additional resources at the moment - so I have to work with people who have a development budget.
  
  I am hoping to scale up the project soon - for folks without a budget, they may have to wait until we have more resources and future releases.

The Social Media Toolkit has been entered in the Knight Foundation News Challenge for 2009. Entries are open to public review, ratings and comments.

If you are interested in this project, please review and rate the proposal.

  I've added a bunch of cool features to the Social Media Toolkit: RSS feeds, Mobile support, Twitter posting, ReCaptcha for registration, Google SiteMaps support, Ad Rotator and Server, Blog page: matrix style display of incoming RSS feeds with SimplePie integration similar to AllTop
  
  You can see demo links on the NewsCloud blog ... blog dot newscloud dot com - and get download links there to the alpha v0.11 code.
