Pinging your article is always a good idea to help get it noticed. Wordpress does it automatically, but plug ins and services like pingler may have larger ping lists that will get you greater ping exposure.

The problem with the automatic pinging in Wordpress is that it's done everytime you post a blog post and every time you make a change and save it. If you do different litle things in a short amount of time the ping services will get notified every time and if that is too much in too short of time according to them they will blacklist you. Ping optimizer plugins will make sure that the ping services will only get notified once every so much time.

Actually, the ping services, for the most part, have figured out in their code how to tell the difference between a WordPress author editing a document a half dozen times in 10 minutes vs. a auto-ping system pinging 1000 times in minute. Generally, they'll simply ignore the extra pings.

Now, if I had a ping management plugin and I wanted people to sign up for my list in order to download and use it, well, I just might exaggerate things a bit.....

I have been using pingler for about a week and a half. When I add a post or page to my wp blog, I have been pinging the domain. Sounds like I should ping the post or page url instead. Can anyone advise me on this?

Ping them all at once. this way search engines will know about them and get indexed

Leslie said it best as to the reason to use a ping optimizer plugin. As or using pingler.com to ping all your articles at once yes you can do them all at once without a problem. You just don't want to ping the same services over and over all day long when you have nothing new to really show them. If they are separate articles on separate urls you will be fine.

You don't want to cutoff pinging completely. What you actually need is a plugin that limits pining. Check out this plugin: MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer (I usually set the plugin to ping at most once every sixty minutes).

Yeah as Leslie has advised, wordpress is automatically pinged. Such plug-ins meant to stop pinging is used so we wont over ping search engines.
