Thoughts on Commission Junction?

Hi all,

I've heard that commission junction has a very good affiliate program, but I've also heard that it's incredibly tough to get in. Anybody here have any experience working with CJ? If so, is it worth your time to align yourself with them? If you are satisfied with CJ, what steps should one take to get in? Thanks in advance.

If you call filling out a form tough, then it's tough. Seriously, that's all you have to do.

Thank you, Tom. I took a quick glance at their application and you're right, it is incredibly lengthy and detailed; however, I like that. Unlike other affiliate websites like CB, CJ seems to be very selective, which is good for serious affiliate marketers who don't want to worry about overcrowded markets and inflated competition.

I was accepted into CJ and it was not hard at all. That was years ago when I first started looking into affiliate marketing.

Its not CJ that is tough...just some of the merchants in the system...:-)

I had zero problems getting into CJ... It's just that some of the merchants within CJ have stricter rules about who can promote their products.

      Adam and Lucas,

Thank you for the comments. Again, I feel somewhat comforted that the merchants have stricter regulations regarding who promotes their products. It helps the dedicated marketer to avoid an overcrowded market.

However, let's speak directly to merchant criteria. What do they generally look for when selecting their promoters? Do they only select individuals that are already well-established in their niche or are their other criteria that they follow? I'm only asking because I'm just starting out in my niche and I want to know whether it's worth my time to even try establish a relationship with the merchants.

The only issue I have had is offers getting dropped without any communication. Some advertisers seem to be pulling out of CJ.

CJ is fine.. but they do have lots of rules. They don't allow redirects and u need special permission from merchant. And if you request your merchants, some may approve. But when they do, CJ tells we can't have all your merchants sending us emails telling that redirects are approved for this aff account.

And they terminate accounts for no reason at all. Even if conversions are high. However, they employ a good tracking technology which is way better than clickbank.

But after the commisssions are credited, you may have problems as they individually monitor all transactions for fraudalent activity. Most commissions are lost during this checking process as their human services is a little horrible.

As for the merchants, if you have a huge website you can get into all. Otherwise it's tough to get accepted by the merchants.

CJ has a policy of dropping affiliates automatically if they do not make a single sale within 6 months. It is probably best that you have some experience with generating affiliate sales before joining. I had been kicked out 3 times before I finally became productive.

I have been with CJ about 3 months now, I guess I'll be kicked out, because I havn't made not one cent. I was with them about three years ago, all I made was $15 or something like and they took that because they said if you don't make enough to get paid, in a _ number of days you lose whats in your account, I don't remember how many days it was. But I closed my account. I registered again about three months ago, and I'm still not doing good at all.

I've been using CJ for 3 years, signed up with an image hosting website. Nearly lost the account in the early days for redirecting traffic. Nowdays landing pages all the way. Once you make a certain amount of money you will find that merchants approach YOU to sell thei products. There are loads of programs that almost auto approve you, start with them

To get approved with a difficult merchant I always custom build a relevant site using wordpress, a free theme and autocontent plugin for related material and then go to them with my site url in CJ - usually works

    Plus Sides

    Easy to get in
    Great tracking
    Good quality merchants and products
    Always pay on time

Easy to get in to and their product lines are diverse.

Lots of odd rules and terms that are different for each advertiser.

Threshold limits for cutting you a check.

    Thanks you guys,

Sorry, but I'm a bit green when it comes to learning the marketing language. Exactly what do you mean by "redirect"?

    Hey cbondcarolina,
CJ is an okay network, you will have a website of your own so that will make it easier to get accepted. If you havn't got your own website get one quick and smart. For any network you have to have your own site.
You have to show that you are a real business not just playing at being a business.
I have been in CJ for about 2 years and have only made one sale, my account has never been shut down. I had over 18 months before I got a sale.
    All the best cheers...........bruceS..........

Anyone can sign up for commission junction. Applying for different merchants is different. Some are quite competitive to get into.

The key is to list all of your websites on your account summary. Publishers that confirm manually will look at your listed sites in helping them decide to approve you.

But... there are thousands of merchants on CJ, many of them will automatically approve manually, so I don't think you'll have a hard time finding one you like.

I have good and bad luck with them and their merchants. As folks have said - getting into CJ is easy - getting approved by the individual merchants is a different matter. Also CJ and the merchants will drop you based on different criteria - though its mostly poor performance or non-activity. Most of the under the radar affiliate marketers I've talked too are not too fond of CJ and their merchants for a variety of reasons - most given above. The concensus also seems to be if have a collection of websites already generating traffic then CJ is a good company - otherwise there are better ones if you are just starting out and don't have a website or traffic. I can't confirm this but its just what I heard.

    best,

They have a ton of products to sell. Sometimes you have to wait to get paid though. The commissions are smaller but the variety of thing you can sell makes up for some of that. Just like anything, you really have to want to sell what they have to make some money.

      Good Luck.

Does CJ pay commissions on a "as you make a sale you get paid" basis? If not does anyone know if there are any programs out there that do pay as you make a sale?

Earning money through CJ is not easy. At least, unlike other networks, they are open about it. There is a status bar in the affiliate control panel called "Network Earnings" where they compare your previous month's earnings against all other affilliates who made money in the previous month. Those who did not make anything (probably the majority) are excluded.

My own experience is that it taks only one sale to make a ranking of 2, $50 to make a ranking of 3, and $250 for a ranking of 4. I have never made a ranking of 5 but I am told that it is around $2500
