How to turn 100% of lost visitors into potential customers

3 replies
For the last few weeks I have been working with some business owners to help them with their sites.

Yes many of them need help!

One thing I was surprised with is that very few knew that they were loosing a lot of visitors simply because their web designer never created a good 404 page for them.

A 404 page is what you hit if the url is missing or entered wrongly and can account for quite a large amount of your traffic.

Nearly all these businesses had at least converted their sites to Wordpress so the solution is simple.

Download a free plugin called table of contents by Mark Beljaars. In fact I was talking to Mark and he did not know his plugin could do this and will be adding it in his next version. It creates a nice sitemap on your site for one and can be used to effectively add a nice sitemap in your 404 pages.

Table of Contents Creator

Once you have activated it go into your appearance theme editor and add this code to your 404 page just below where it has the <h2> tag.

<?php echo tocc_build_toc(get_option('tocc_options')); ?>

You will get something like this when your visitors add a bad url.

Now instead of all those frustrated visitors they can now find what they are looking for.

Hope this helps

    I actually have a file of url's of really cool 404 pages that I thought were very clever, but I have to say that this is more helpful.

    Thanks.

    This one works very well for me: WordPress › 404 SEO Plugin WordPress Plugins

    Alternatively, I use a combination of the YARP plugin, the Widgets on Pages plugin, WP Hide Page plugin, and No 404 plugin to create my own 404 page that has a list of related pages.

    Or another easy way is to use one of the random post plugins and add the code to your 404 page in the theme.
