Implications of using an established name in domain

I think the general consensus is that using a brand name in a domain is not recommended, but I was thinking about a few scenarios and realized I didn't know if they would be acceptable or not. Can anyone shed any light on the following?

1) Domain contains the name of a well known person, artist or title (e.g. A fan site with affiliate links).

2) Domain contains name of a person, artist or title that is not well known but may soon be. (e.g. unknown person appears on the news or a TV show and receives a lot of attention).

3) Domain includes a keyword for a brand name but the brand name is generic and the content of the site has nothing to do with the company (e.g applenews.com or something like that).

4) Domain contains the name of another well established website but including the suffix (e.g. betting.org and your domain is betting-org.com).

If I had to guess, I would say that 2 and 3 are probably acceptable and the others aren't but maybe someone will correct me on that.

Also, I would be interested in hearing if anyone has ever contacted a company to ask permission to use their name and what kind of success rate that has generally?
