There's a brand new site to create a free mobile version for your website: Onbile - Free mobile website templates (I have no affiliation with this site)

"Paste one line of code on the index page of your website & when they visit with their mobile phones, they are redirected to your mobile page"

Might be of help to many of you.

Looks like a great resource. My only reservations with these free solutions is survivability. It usually prompts the following questions...

    * how long will the service be around? I mean really, how long?
    * will the service ever charge a fee related to their services?

Imagine have several mobile website clients setup on services similar to this, and the services disappears or radically changes their policies.

Do people even buy anything from mobile websites though?

Don't know about people but marketers sure are jumping on this whole mobile phenomenon. That's why Mobile Monopoly has about 1000 gravity.

Whether or not you should use this depends on your target market. Do they use smartphones? - Then they can access your website anyways. If they get redirected to a more "mobile looking" version of the site, it might not appeal to them.

    - Or can you edit this?

I tried out the software and could not get the html code to work, so I wrote them for help just now.

We will see how good their support is and I will ask them the questions posed by Hotlintz

On my WP blog I am using a plugin WPTouch (actually, plugin and "theme" in the same time).
Install, activate and it creates a cool view of the blog. I am looking at it right now on my iPhone - it the blog in my sig, check it out if you have a smartphone handy.

It supports this user-agents: android, blackberry9500, blackberry9530, cupcake, dream, incognito, iphone, ipod, mini, webOS, webmate.

P.s. I have a free version of the plugin.

Convert your website to mobile version converters are not a true science yet. There are many issues with compatibility, etc. The best way to create a separate website optimized for a mobile phone - A true mobile site builder. WP plug ins will work to an extent but they lack the feature set a true builder possess.

Also, PC to mobile site redirects can be a monster. One line of code won't do the trick as there are many different handsets coming on the market each day. There are now websites that provide a redirect service, which encompasses many of the internet ready handsets in use today. Search for Mobile Site redirects

    Great questions, Hotlinkz!

Netgain1 made some good points about the multitude of mobile devices one has to consider for code and the headaches redirects can create.

I'm personally looking into using the free Wordpress plugins because all the other mobile site builders offering their tools for free or a nominal fee or forever changing. They are not necessarily built for the WordPress platform. Therefore, support and options may be limited.

I concur with the assessment made by Calvin...

On the surface, using such a redirect service seems like the answer, but when you stop to analyze the variables, these types of service are really not the answer.

Another question you must ask is, "Are they serving up advertisements to support the concept of their free service?"

Christopher pretty much brought up some additional food for thought...

Between the info provided by Calvin and Christopher, the best option becomes clear; don't cut any corners and set up a website programmed for catering to mobile phone devices.
