A couple of months ago another video hosting site won a lawsuit as well. I think it was dailymotion, metacafe,,,,, one of the smaller video sites. They used some kind of safe harbor law to defend against the lawsuit. The judge said that since the video site was pro-active in removing the videos, there was no harm.

In the article, the judge refers the a safe harbor law as well.

YouTube did what it needed to do to fall under the "safe harbor" provisions of the copyright law.
I think its a victory for all website owners that may publish copyright material without knowing.

It looks like viacom and the recording industry of america are going to have to go else where to get free money. This was not about the material, it was about a cash grab.

The stupid thing is that if Viacom would find a way to work with Google/Youtube instead of against it, they could probably turn it into an incredible sales tool.

My thoughts exactly. There must be some bitter jack#$$ at the helm of Viacom. That's just bad business. There are so many things they could have done joint venture wise with Youtube to avoid all this. I guess Viacom is in the business of burning bridges with some pretty narrow thinking.

Awesome! I fought several battles back in the day with Universal (I was at mp3.com and I ran Stage6.com for DivX). Good to finally see the courts coming to their senses.

    Rick is right.

I would have just asked youtube to slap advertisements in every one of those videos.
