i think you have to make a page index.htm so the server can pick it up as your homepage...

You need to give your index page a file extension - .htm or .html

Don't panic. Just start again. Design one page and make sure it is called index.html. Upload that. See what happens.

Edit: also check you are uploading to the correct directory. Can't speak for hosgator as I don't use them, but with my host you have to up load to public_html.

Call Hostgator: They are the only ones that can see what you have done. You can find their toll free number on the home page in the upper right hand corner of the page. Web Hosting, Reseller Hosting, and Dedicated Website Hosting w/ cPanel - HostGator

I don't understand why more people don't just do this in the first place when they have a site problem. You'll find most host companies would rather help you than lose your business.

You also need to remove your site info from your original post before someone decides to copy it.

Your main page (default) must be called index.html or index.php for it to show up when you type your site address as http://mysite.com

Otherwise you need to type http://mysite.com/newpage.html

It is also wise (especially in other folders) to have an index.html file - so that people cannot see (and download) your files listed there.

If you just transferred your domain name, you'll need to give it time to propagate. It'll be a little dodgy for up to 24 hours.

    Just a guess.

    Another common problem:

Win XP automatically hides the files extension by default.

So instead of index.html you would see index. Further, if you save a file (eg: index.txt) and then rename it as index.html, you would get index.html.txt.

    You're experiencing something like this?

You can also place an .htaccess file above your public html folder with

    Options -Indexes

to turn off showing the directory if no index file exists. I would suggest doing this so you don't inadvertently leave all of your files exposed. Who wants to have to upload an index file in every graphics folder, etc..

Excellent suggestion, Gail, and much better than mine.

But for someone who is having trouble with their very first home page, maybe this will come later . . .

No matter which way it is done - make sure you do it!

It seems to be displaying fine now.
You might want to re-work your layout though. It looks a bit stretched out.
