Top 10 ways to promote a site?

I'm new here but I'm suffering from information overload already and I can't find what I'm looking for. I have a few simple questions relating to site promotion.

1) What are the top 5 or 10 ways of getting traffic to a new site? It has a social networking element to it but there's more to it than that. No products are being sold and it's free. It hasn't been launched yet though.

2) Relating somewhat to the first question, is social spark worth investing in?

3) Finally, what is the best way to get revenue from a site like that? PPC ads or something else?

Since this is a paid forum I'm hoping to get some good pointers based on people's experiences.

General good old fashioned advice (and any links to specific threads) would be appreciated.

    Hey There,

The information overload is not uncommon for people new to site marketing, or people old. I'm confronted with new information every day, and I don't know what to do with it, half the time, I'm not even sure if I know how to take action on it.

    But some 5-10 Ways:

    1) Social Marketing - Promotion on Twitter & Facebook is great, if you have the popularity. What I mean is a mass of followers.

    2) Search Engine Marketing - Doing things like Back-Link building (look around the forum for help on that...), can help you rank high for your keywords. The on page also matters in that case. - Check out The Rank Mover by Daniel Tan, if your looking for something that explains that.

    3) Putting your name out there - Whether it be on Forums, Blog Comments or something else, get your name out there, and make sure there's a link attached to it. When you put yourself out there, as someone who knows what there talking about, people will respect you, and have a want to check out your website.

That's all I can think about right now (sorry..)..

    2) I can't really answer your second question. - As I am a SocialSpark (or have signed up to be, yet to run any), user. However, it is a good system, and if you can get cheap blog posts, go ahead, however there seem to be cheaper alternatives for getting traffic.

    3) You know, you can monetize in any way. No way works great for every site. There is Cost Per Action (Networks like MaxBounty, Azoogle to name a few). and there is Pay Per Click (adbrite, adsense etc), and then Affiliate Marketing (Clickbank, shareasale), you need to try everything to see what works for you.

P.S. I really hope this post helps you a bit

In my opinion He nailed it pretty much. Essentially there are various methods and they vary depending on the site you have the niche ect.

But the most general method are search engine optimization and viral marketing with social marketing.

Then there is also forums relating to your niche as well as paid options.

Essentially if you want you can find hundreds of ways to promote your site but personally in my opinion what's best is find and focus on a method you like and is effective instead while having a variety of methods incorporated.

Thanks for sharing. Guess I am doing the right things to drive traffic now. Ha.

Method 1. Am now driving traffic using Twitter. Still not sure if it is worth to set up a Facebook account yet. Heard of Facebook Ads but how to drive traffic using Facebook? Is it similar to Twitter as you post great content to your wall or you have to set up a Facebook Fan Page? Hmm... but I am not an expert yet...

Method 2. I am getting my articles written soon and I will be submitting them to article directories then start to social bookmark them. Like to outsource this part.

May I know where and how do you guys hire a person to do all the backlink stuff? I guess it's quite time consuming if I do it myself. My time is really limited...

Method 3. Am also try to contribute as much time as possible in my niche forums. But sometimes I get a bit lost in the forum. Too much information. Hope that I can create or find a system to leverage forum marketing.

I think some other driving traffic methods are including video marketing. And it is not difficult to do if you have your articles written. Just convert your articles into videos and post them to sites like youtube. Or you can use PLR articles that related to your niche. Bookmark them too. Am going to try this out soon also.

JV is also another effective way to promote your site. But if you are start from scratch, this may be a little bit hard as you need to build up the trust first. I guess forum is a great point to start. Then offer good incentives to your JV partners and leverage their list to get massive traffic to your site.

In my opinion, there are various ways to drive traffic but start from just one or two of them first, outsource them if possible, track the results and slowly add in more traffic methods. If you do like 10 traffic methods concurrently you will soon get exhausted.

      Hope this helps.

I use Ping.fm to tweet my posts from my site to around 30 sites

I also submit my rss feed to some of the major directories.

On my site I do display some adsense ads but chuck in an affiliate product here or there to monetize my site.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the input. I don't think social networking sites are good if you're starting from scratch (please correct me if I'm wrong though). SEO is somewhat of an art form and something I want to look into properly.

I like the idea of using Social Spark because you're paying people with established blogs etc to promote your site in their own words. The idea that people will take their word for it rather than traditional ad's sounds interesting. I'm wondering what the cheaper alternatives are though and are they any better?

It's the 100's of ways that is the problem, when you have x amount to put into pormotion what do you go for?

I think if a product or site is good enough it will sell itself but am I being naive there?

That being, if people think it's good they'll spread the word automatically and help you out.

You know, I just want to touch on your SocialSpark Idea. Many blogs (such as mine) run a program where you can guest post on the blog. If your writing skills are great, you can gain get traffic free from that site just by sending in a guest post to them; albeit a lower amount though, because paying for it means you can buy more and more, and while more.

If you have something of value to contribute then I could see how that would be viewed as a good idea and a way to pull in extra traffic. However, if you're new to IM I'm sure it would just be seen as spam. I'm curious what you consider to be cheaper alternatives for getting traffic.

Try advertising with google, spread the word on social networking sites. Promote it on internet forums. The revenue part usually comes after you have a large number of visitors on your site.

Why do you think SEO is an Artform. This is just a myth propagated by the SEO companies so they can charge you a lot of money. Go watch some of Matt Cutts videos to get the basics.

It is all about finding niches within your industry and then adding relevant targeted content on a regular basis.

So if we are selling tyres all you need to do is drill down into manufactures, Car types, Tyre Types etc. These are like niches in the tyre industry and then write some content on each one and keyword target each bit of content.

Very few sites ever rank well by just optimizing their sites for the search engines. It is a process of keywords and content and making sure everything on your site can be seen by the search engines ( they don't see images so you need to alt tag them etc) that will drive you to the top every time if you apply it consistently.

Add to that some backlinking (socail bookmarking, articles tec) and that is the complete formula. Also if you use this it wont matter how the search engines change you will still get good ranking because you are providing them with what they want.

They are in the business of providing their customers with good quality up to date content and if you provide that you will be on top most times.

Start doing black hat or trying to trick them and eventually you will come undone.

Remember the KISS principle. (Keep It Super Simple)

We have been doing this form years and it keeps on working.
