Hey everyone,

I'n new to this forum; I am really interested in SEO, though

Is there any value in buying the domain name 2011tonyawards.com and packing it full of good, worthwhile content, hitting the keywords a bunch of times?

Thanks in advance

No, I understand that...It's just like...the CPC is $0.05, and i wonder if there would be any innate advertising, adsense, or adword opporutnity.

That could very well be one of those domain names that comes back to haunt you.

        Just sayin'.

Usually when a CPC is at .05 it means they dont allow you to advertise on that term.

Most likely its because of the brand nature of the domain, or if its a topic they dont want floating around in adwords.

I'm not going to get it myself, but this IS a public forum....As a recommendation, if you 'think' it could be valuable, you should swipe it up ASAP....

For the price it will cost you to get that domain, just buy it and try.

Announcing it on a forum like this, do you really think people will not snap it up thinking it's a good idea themselves??!

Buy it, try it and judge yourself, it's only a few dollars.

It's a good domain as long as you enjoy corresponding with trademark attorneys.

        that's why i'm asking....

        1) can i get sued for making a content-based website?

        2) is it illegal?

        3) how could i potentially come back to haunt me?

        thanks in advance

Let's see...you're blatently ripping off a known commodity by using their name. There is no gray area here.

The day you show up on the serps for the term is probably the same day the lawyers send you a C&D letter.

It's hard to figure out where you're confused on this issue...

            Hey Bill,

            Here's the thing...

I am a Tony Awards enthusiast. I am going to make the site a 2011 Tony Awards resource database with REAL content and REAL stuff. I'm just wondering if its illegal to do that because there's not intention of harming the name of the tonys - it will all be legit information. I'm confused because I don't see why i'd get a cease and desist if its in the public domain.

Put no ads on it and make it a tony awards "fan page" and you might get away with it under Fair Use, but of course, you won't make any money

i didnt want to make money or exploit them, but tony award is trademarked, and they can just take it back from me without any compensation. right? i mean compensation for the actual purchase fee...

Here's the deal...your intentions are irrelevent to the good folks who own that product. They sell that product and the rights to distribute it to TV stations/networks and the like for good money.

What you will find out is that they will not appreciate your intervention in any way, shape, or form. It's just business. They own the rights, you don't.

Now, if you want to test this theory out, by all means build your site. But when the attys come a knockin' don't think that they will just go away because you're a nice guy with good intentions.

    From tonyawards dot com:

The American Theatre Wing owns the following registered trademarks: the Tony Award®, Tony®, the Tony Award® logo, and the Tony Award® medallion.

Bottom Line: Don't waste your money.

to me, it seems like it would be copyright infringement to register that domain, even if you plan on selling the domain to the owners of that copyright. It would be like purchasing the domain name "windows7.com" right as Microsoft was announcing the release of Windows 7, it's copyright infringement and you won't make any money from doing it because anyone who patents a brand name and a variant of the brand name is in a domain name you register, that's copyright infringement.

Trademarks are not copyrights ... they are trademark infringement. If you buy a trademarked domain and offer to sell it to the trademark owner, that is proof of registering it in bad faith and you will lose it if the owner fights it.

Certain non-commercial uses are allowed that fall under Fair Use, which includes a fan page and a review page, such as TonyAwardsSucks dot com, or something similar to that.
