Quick Question about Pinging

By now, I know that it's not a matter of "should I"... I know that if there is anything that CAN be done to help with traffic, it SHOULD be done. So, I am now interested in using pinging services to help index my site - just found out about them a couple weeks ago.

My question is, am I only supposed to ping the top level of the site? I.e. mysite.com, or am I supposed to also be pinging individual pages? I.e. mysite.com/some-page

It seems like the whole point of pinging is to notify statistics sites that my content has been updated and is available. However, I have anywhere between 20-200 pages added on my site daily - so is pinging the top level of the domain all I need to do, since technically the entire site has been updated? Or am I supposed to ping EVERY specific page that I would like indexed, since every page is its own entity?

I use pingler, and am always looking for other pinging sites to use as well - but they seem to have the largest list of ping services available. Do you know of any better pinging services I should be using? I don't have a wordpress site, so any decent "auto pinging" software is out of the question for me. Thanks in advance.

I use pingomatic.com - they have a toolbar feature. I ping whenever I put up a new post on a blog. I have pinged static pages as well - but only when I first put it up.

Well, there are lots of simple ways to destroy competitor sites. Its just not appropriate or proper to do so. Lets all have some morals and values here people.

            SeekyT,

Yes, you do want each post pinged whether it is the main page or deep page. Wordpress pings each blog post you submit.

Over pinging has nothing to do with Google, pinging itself has nothing to do with Google. Your pings go to aggregators which Google happens to check for new stuff.

It is the aggregators that will start ignoring your pings if you are a twit. Any effect with search rank will happen much later, if at all, assuming pings aren't the only way you tell the world you have new content.

Pings are great because the search engines check them regularly. Ping for speedy indexing. That's all.
