A few years ago, Squidoo was all the rage. Their 'lenses' were supposed to give your site high ranking links and Google loved them.

Then after a while Google gave them a 'slap' due to all the spam lenses that were being created

Squidoo cracked down on the spam and changed a lot of its rules

In today's market do Squidoo lenses bring us any benefits ?

Should I build a Squidoo lens or am I better off writing another article ?

I sure don't see many Lenses on page 1 these days, do you? So maybe that answers the question in a way..if thats what you are after.

I do still see Ezine articles, Buzzle articles and slightly less frequently, Hubpages.

When did you last see a Squidoo lens on pg1, anyone? Please correct me!

Having said that, its another exposure point for your site, your rss feed, your articles, your list building 'bait' and another backlink or two and only takes half an hour to do, so why not?

During the Squidoo popularity peak I had dozens of lenses ranking very well and bringing a respectable amount traffic and sales.

Sadly, those days appear to be over. I still think it's a great blogging format, but I believe it was so saturated/abused by marketers that the Google love has declined dramatically.

I have, but not in IM niche. The squidoo lenses I created for hobby-craft niche are in page 1 and have been there for months, even though I don't get around to updating them much.

I talk to and network with other lens owners, promote the lenses to get comments/user activity, so they get some modest traffic. Lenses definitely helped increasing the sales for my artisan/craft products.

Many top selling etsy sellers have squidoo lenses and they form communities and network on squidoo, link each other etc so the lenses definitely help a lot for the hobby related niches.

I also agree, get a lens to page one for high quality keywords is almost nearly impossible.

It's like every other fad we jump on as marketers, a few changes and it's a bit harder to rank.

That being said, I think the flexibility of the platform still has a lot of potential and I include a lens in all my article submissions. It's easy to make it unique with all the modules they provide.

I've got about half a dozen squidoo lenses I made over a year ago and have barely touched them since but they still drive traffic to a website every day, Not many maybe but its still free traffic and it does get sales.

I still use Squiddo as part of my link building strategy! I don't know about their value as standalone sites but I do know that Google likes to see a variety of different links pointing back to my website from different sources and web 2.0 links are to my mind currently still important. So I continue with them and hub pages etc. But as we all know things are always changing and we will move with times/go with the flow won't we!

Thanks, I guess you are all voicing a similar opinion to my own

My reason for asking was that during some keyword research, I came across lens which held a # 6 position on Google. But I only saw one

I now rarely see lenses ranking highly but they do still have a value...

Today they are not the be all and end all but tomorrow they may be... we shall wait and see what we need to do nxt...

I've seen some great lenses. I think it's good for linkwheeling and linkbuilding but I haven't tried it just yet

I don't think it could hurt but I do agree that Squidoo doesn't pack the punch is used to. Google caught on as they do with every method that is abused and offers no real value to the user.

Personally, i would invest my time in articles. Time tested and true and most of all...here to stay.

There are other types of squidoo services out there. I would recommend today using one of them over squidoo. Also if your just writing content a good article can also do wonders.

Squidoo works well with an orgainized seo backlinking campaign for it. It can rank really high for high paying keyword phrase. ex. "Top 10 Christmas Gifts" . This len has a really high pr and search listing.

I'm pretty involved in selling Amazon products and I frequently see Squidoo pages ranking for keywords I look at. Having said that it's pretty clear that these Squidoo pages have a lot of backlinks from outside Squidoo.

Everybody was talking about squidoo few years ago, but not so anymore. You can still use it for gaining web 2.0 PR backlinks. For ranking on Google use ezine instead

A year ago I had 27 lenses I used as sort of pre-sell pages for IM related products. Several had #1 listings on the front page of G. Many more were at least on the front page for the name of the product. About 4-5 months ago all but one were locked because they were too commercial (so they explained).

The thing was that I often only had one or two affiliate links on the entire lens, but for stuff in the IM niche it's tough to not get slapped.

One thing I've thought about trying would be to create lenses and link them to my blog where I promote the products rather than to vendor's sales pages. Squidoo used to work really well for promoting IM related products, but they put the hammer down. It goes to the idea of not putting all of one's eggs in the same basket.
