What Makes You Click Unsubscribe

I know that I have some petty peaves about unsubscribing to list. Duplicate content
No content
Same email from 5 different email lists
No real content
Too Many emails from the same marketers

What reasons do you click that unsubscribe button.
#click #makes #unsubscribe

With most email lists, if I'm not interested, I often just won't open the emails anymore, and they'll go unread into my archive.

However, there is one type of email promotion that peeves me off so much that I unsubscribe never to return.

The case where this happens is when the list owner is recommending an affiliate product for multiple emails in a row. The worst I've seen it was when someone was promoting an affiliate or JV offer for ten emails in a row. It got really annoying since I wasn't interested in his JV partner.

I guess that's a potential risk to pushing a JV partner for a launch. I liked the emails concerning my list-owner's product, but it got too irritating hearing about the other guy.

However, if a list-owner emails me just one message about an affiliate product he recommends, that never bothers me, as long as it isn't a different affiliate product every week.

I agree. A burning question, that I pose to a list owner is if your product is the best traffic generating gizmo in the world. I bought it . So why is it the next day, your downtrodden homeless friend just discovered the golden holy grail to traffic generation. then the next day is the 16 year old broke college student discovered another traffic secret. Enough is Enough.

A constant barrage of e-mails promoting theirs (or others) products... and rarely sending any "real" content.

Also, another thing that would make me unsubscribe in a heartbeat is if I receive a spammy e-mail that was just flat-out ridiculous (such as one with a headline that reads for example: You're Going To Die In 3 Hours If You Don't Read This E-mail!)

          • Bad grammar and spelling. Shows that you really don't care - instant unsubscribe
          • The "I forgot to include the link" double posts

Lots of things make me unsubscribe, but my top 2 are:

          1) I get a "personal email" promoting a product where is seems like some original thought has gone into it and I double check the affiliate resource page and find it was a cut and paste spam merge.

Total BS and deception = They've already proven they can't be trusted. Why would I want read anything else from them?

          2) Five promotional emails in a row with zero useful content.

Don't respect my time = You're a time vampire that requires an unsubscribe stake through the heart.

Yep...I click unsubscribe when I start receiving 2-3 emails a day from the same marketer and all they do is copy/paste an affiliate product email into their auto responder. Theres nothing wrong with this but whatever happened to providing GOOD content as well and building a relationship with your list

      Same as above...

...AND I can also get pretty p** off by misleading subject lines that are so obviously trying to trick you into opening the message. A typical example: "Congratulations, you made a sale..."- that makes me hit unsubscribe button at a lightening speed.

I'm on one from some cheap WSO I bought on here..

Basically it consists of every so often.

Subject: You NEED to check this out now

Msg: <name>, I just discovered this and thought it was too important to keep to keep to myself. Imagine pressing a button and generating $183k in 20 minutes. click here to find out more.

Stuff along the lines of that, just promoting clickbank products. I haven't unsubscribed, because I like to see how others 'market' as it were, even if they don't do it well. But I would never ever buy anything from an email they send.

Excessive frequency of repetitive offers. I unsubscribed to Ryan Deiss's list for this reason.

Another list I unsubscribed to was Vistaprint - I bought some business cards and they subsequently sent me 17 emails over the course of the following week... before my order even arrived in the mail!! And even after I opted out they still sent me the same **** over and over... so I marked them as spam. I like the quality of the product they provided and the price was fair but I don't know if I want to deal with their incessant harassment so I may shop elsewhere next time.

Generally, if I've taken something for free, I'll remain on their list for a while to see what else they have to offer - it's the least I can do. I've even been known to buy and item or three if the offer looks good enough

yes I am newbie and have been for too long and am subscribed and that just keeps me distracted from taking action..
all I do is read ... read .. read.. dammit!

there surely is something good about knowing whats going on thanks to those mails but this should come up when you're actually working and want to know about the good stuff thats coming out..

I have enough on my drive to focus and take action but then another mail kicks me into wandering one more time..

        unsubscribe johnnycat!!!!

and about the thread here and confirming all that is said above I will add that I get really pushed off when I want to leave a page and 1..2..3..4..popups try to keep me doin' something... wow if it hits my nerves...guess that means I'm evolving cause I used to fall often at these tricks but now they just mean I don't like the product anymore period!!!

now instead if I hit the refresh button and no popups are there I give it a second chance...
but now my point of view shifted because I know so much although I haven't done much

so here I am and now I'm going to unsubscribe to some people, especially after getting the last mail for automasstraffic - 4 popups! please leave me alone!!!
plus a mail from who knows who saying I haven't heard from her for a while.. c'mon who sold you my email? and you waste time and money for promoting automasstraffic? getoutahere!!!!
respect because you're doing more than I do but you look more like a spammer than an IMer! I know for sure once I get it going this will not be my style...never!

Too many emails that are pitches and not content. Or, even giving away "free" stuff (as in recommendations to other people's products that you can "get free for an email address" which ALSO ends up in pitch after pitch), OR "one time offers" after submitting.

Yeah, I know, that's the nature of the net, but when it is happening in almost every email that hits you, it gets a little annoying :p

I have absolutely no problem with a person emailing me even daily, if they provide something informative... but just to pitch another product or affiliate link, even if it IS related to something I've bought from the person sending the emails.

Remember that, (and even when the content is good), sometimes we are SO overloaded with emails from many marketers, you have to stand out to be different, to get people wanting to stay.

    That's all it takes.

I prefer to signup to as many lists as I can - they are like RSS feeds or Google Alert messages.. I like to keep my finger on the pulse and see what the competition are up to..

I divert the emails into a folder rather straight to my inbox.

I then spend a few minutes each weeks browsing and deleting.

I would agree with Hamish on this one. The biggest thing that gets me to unsubscribe is when they can not even get the simple formatting right. These kind of things are good lessons on how not to treat your list. I do give away freebies for joining my list, however I have even yet to send out an email to them hocking an affiliate product. I would rather earn their trust through content, etc and be able to earn more on a high ticket item, or with having more authority by not email bombing them.

One email a day I can tolerate, as long as it's not a pitch every single day. I don't mind the very occasional two in a day, if the second one is to correct an error in the first, or is something of extreme urgency.

Send in a way that does not conform to the above and the sender is unsubscribed - period.

The most egregious emails are the ones where they send repeated copy-paste emails for the same product (usually a big launch). Those are really annoying, at the very least they should have the creativity to either write something themselves or pay a copywriter to do so!

But I do keep every email I receive from people who are marketing successfully so that I can study them and apply to my own email marketing tactics. It is really handy if you want to promote a certain product and have no idea what it's like, especially the big launch products. You can just study every email you receive from "gurus" how they market the same products. It's really a FREE lesson.

This thread is the exact reason why I diverged my sales funnel(s) from my newsletter...to keep from flooding inboxes.

At the end of the sales funnel, in the last few emails, I put tempting offers to get funnel subscribers to jump to the newsletter which consistently has legit content and ads mixed together, because getting more than one two offers a week outside of the initial sales funnel(s)/course(s) is irritating I am sure.

I really only use one email address and like to keep it clean and spam free. I follow two Guru's just to see what they are promoting. Pretty much everybody else get unsubscribed. Following a list(s) takes you away from building assets, but you can learn from some.

I have been unsubscribing left and right from a lot of lists recently.
My top reasons to unsubscribe are:

    1. Countdown spam. As the emails promoting the same affiliate offer everyday were not bad enough, some marketers took it to the next level spamming my inbox every hour. I hate those countdown style spam emails 'hurry! 2 hours left! '30 minutes left!' 'closing in 10 minutes' '30 seconds left, this si your last chance!'

    2. Deceptive subjects insulting my intelligence. Anything that falsifies stuff like 'your first clickbank sale', 'Re: you received a paypal payment', 'Your $50 commission', 'confirmation: your $47 order', 'Re: Your Clickbank purchase' -you get the picture. This is retarded as hell and no one needs it. Even a 5 year old can come up with more interesting subject lines than that.

    3. Promoting crap products: It's sad to see so many well respected names out there going out of their way to promote complete scam products like the latest facebook TOS violator script or the twitter spam launches. Promoting ancient methods from 2006 as some brand new system ain't cool. If you have such a shortage of decent products, let me know, I can tell you where to find some good PLR's to rehash (at least they are new!) For crying out loud, why do they have to promote the crappiest stuff is beyond my comprehension. has there been a mass exodus of decent product creators I don't know about?

    4. No content, all affiliate pitches, mystery meat garbage: I don't mind mostly pitch kind of emails so long as it's pitching good quality stuff. I stick with the marketers who pitch their own products and fully disclose the nature of the products they are pitching. No mystery meat whatsoever (like those recent big launches). If it's CPA, they say it. If it's article marketing, they say it. No unknown mystery BS.

    5. Pathetic attention fiend behavior: Constantly mailing out wrong stuff (I am not talking about the occasional honest mistakes here) to inflate their open rate. They send out stuff and deliberately put broken link or wrong info, then they send out another one correcting it. I have seen a pattern of this with different marketers. If your open rates suck, then come up with better copy or hire a copywriter instead of wasting people's time!

    6. Churn & burn marketing: General disrespect to subscribers and outrageous spamming behavior. These guys don't give a rat's arse about their subscribers, they keep whoring out their list to everyone in town, spamming every waking hour, then they dish out tons of cash to buy solo ads, run PPC campaigns and whatnot to replace the thousands of defectors with fresh new leads. These reckless sleazebags are ruining the list building for everyone. They are the reason why building sustainable income as a clickbank affiliate is now harder than opening a brick & mortar store. This is why it's getting more and more difficult & time consuming (not to mention EXPENSIVE) to build a list for beginners/newbies out there. You have to give people serious incentives to sign up in your list these days unless you are in some obscure virgin niches.

I've received phone calls from employees of a very well known marketer trying to sell me his coaching plan for ridiculous sums of money, not to mention that when you signed up to his list, you automatically got subscribed to 7 different lists he had.

So not only did you get email daily from 7 of his lists, but you also got 7 daily emails from solo ads, PLUS the phone calls.

It took me forever to get completely unsubscribed from his lists, and I had to change the home phone number to stop the calls.

        Highly annoying and unethical.

Needless to say, that kinda cured me of the whole email marketing thing. I rarely subscribe to anyone's list, and when I do, I will unsubscribe in a heartbeat if I feel the person's business ethics are in question.

I do test various marketers every now and then to find out if they are just spamming their list or providing good useful information. More often than not, I have found that most email marketers are nothing more than spammers, sending me the latest, gotta get it now, program to hit the market.

They are what I consider to be the vultures of the IM Newbie market. Living on the scraps of shattered dreams.

When I have all their info already and my knowledge has already exceeded the things that they are sharing. Nothing new to me. No value. Always trying to sell something first before earning my trust. Sending me emails each day. Ad swaping me around, makes me feel used and abused. And sometimes I just unsubscribe cause I don't want to be a sucker forever on their list. Anyone that I feel is dishonest and unethical who treats me like I'm just another dollar on their list. It would also help if they actually reply back to your email. People that always hype up their email talking about secret this secret that. Secret my A$$ there is no secret only information that I don't know yet. The only secret is the name of your writers, your VA's, your bank account, and your actual system that you use to make money.. ( no one shares their exact money making system ) and if they claim they do on the sales page.. It's not their exact system it's just an overview of what to do to make money.. Not what they do to make money.

Usually what makes me unsub is either I have unintentionally subscribed to two lists of the same name and person(Like a customers list for a product, and a list for another offer they had an optin with) But I have also unsubbed if I don't follow them anymore, they email too much(Even if it's good content) or if I am just a lead on too many others.

I also hate hype for products especially the doomsday ones "If you don't buy XYZ you will never make it as an internet marketer."

I absolutely detest misleading subject lines that "trick" you into opening. I received one today that said "Late Payment Notice" and it made my heart skip a beat. When I opened it it was an IM pitch about the latest greatest product that will supposedly prevent the subject lines like the one received from ever appearing in my email box. Oh really, THIS one made it in. Aaargh! Might be clever and get you to open but the sender has completely lost my trust . . . No thought at all . . . UNSUBSCRIBE!

Guys, don't click unsubscribe from email that you don't recognize, or you know are clearly spam. Those links are usually not actual unsubscribe links, and you are likely verifying that yours is a valid email address to be sent/sold to other spammers. Just delete those. Only unsubscribe for lists you know that you have joined.

I will unsubscribe if I am emailed with nothing but promotional stuff, especially when it's completely unrelated to the reason I joined their list. The more often they email me with that stuff, the more likely I will unsubscribe. I stay on lists of marketers that I respect, and that provide good information in their emails. And typically, when those marketers do promote things, they provide first hand working knowledge of the product or information they are promoting, which is usually, at least somewhat, related to the reason you joined their list in the first place.

I heard that previously, but had not thought about it.
So, I guess those ones, should just be reported as spam and deleted!

I don't unsubscribe very much but sometimes you just have to. I got one this morning telling me my friend had suggested I join a particular club. They were gone in a flash.

Some of the weird subject lines - i just never open and if I see the same person sending the same thing - sorry but you have to go.

People who recommend obvious crap without knowing squat about the product as well as those who never add value. The other thing is the "my good friend" line. An obvious cut and paste of a JV template is another.

One that got me when I was new to Im was purchasing a wso, and signing up to a hosting company recommended by the warrior in his ebook, soon to find out that hosting company was actually his. This didn't bother me, sounds like a reasonable way to earn some more beer tokens. What peeved me was I started receiving emails for Clickbank products from the warrior about "earn billions in minutes" and then 10 minutes later I'd receive the same email from hostadmin@thehostingcompany.com.

I don't mind getting this sort of marketing from his personal making list but I signed up for hosting and I don't want marketing junk from the hosts as well. I soon cancelled the hosting package for this reason. I was just doubled up with the same emails

What I later noticed was the testimonials on the hosting company were from the site owner. Hehe

Nowadays I'm pretty selective with who's list I subscribe to. If a rogue does slip through then emailing me more than once a week will soon see them leaving my contact list!

Just bout anything that makes me wanna say tl;dr

Hahaha, but seriously, when I get like hundreds of e-mails from the same person and all of them are just affiliate offers it gets so annoying. Like I think, "wait, wasn't the last e-mail the best product ever? and now this one says that as well?"

I think all the bases have been covered by all the previous posters, but..

      • Email Subject Lines which have no relevance or are detailing $99999999999999 income a month.
      • Numerous emails from the same person within a really short time frame.
      • Unreadable emails, emails must be readable for a start! comn!
      • Unsubscribed from lists where I cannot remember the person etc. Must be attempting to provide me value and content if not, Gone.

Also having no content at all or where the emails are purely affiliate product pitches. Marketers whom are promoting / pitching their own products which are of good quality I do not mind, it is when I begin to receive constant emails which will not disclose even the slightest piece of information regarding the
product which they just linked me to.

I want to know what the product is, what category it in fact lays under, no hidden stuff.

Spam, list owners having little regard for the subscribers on their lists and just constantly spam, sending me emails every hour on the hour. I started with my list building a few months ago completely newb and fresh and It's getting harder and harder for list builders whom cannot or do not offer a very serious incentive for people
to sign up to your emailing list.

Because without a serious incentive people are of the belief their email will get abused by the majority and indeed see no point in subscribing up to someone elses list again only to be flooded with spam and affiliate promotions.

When I started to see hype that was just hype and there was no value behind it.. And I saw the typical "guru" tricks..

My subscriptions dwindled until I figured it out and saw who was really valuable and willing to genuinely help out others because they were in the position to.. And he inspired me to want to do the same

definitely what has made me recently on two occasions has been:

    1. those email subject lines that make it look like it's either a reply from a message board or a payment of some kind (and i've seen top marketers use this approach).

    2. i've had a marketer i use to respect spend virtually daily emails about the same program over and over again and i've even replied on two occasions saying stop over promoting over hyping the same program on a daily basis and i didn't even get a reply.

    regards

      1) If I get 2 or 3 emails in a row about JV'd promos.

      2) Emails with redirects straight to sales letters, clickbank products.

      3) Anything that reads like a sales letter or takes ages to get to the point. So, anything that I feel wastes my time.

      4) Any cheap tricks like in the subject line.

      5) Anything that talks about how I could make $10,000+ a month with NO LIST, NO MONEY, NO WEBSITE, NO HOUSE etc.
