Newbie Keyword Question

I am really new to internet marketing and I am trying to find a domain name suitable for purchasing. What I would like to know is if I search for a keyword phrase in Google Keyword Tool and it gets a monthly result of 40,500 and then search on google in "" and get a result of 125,000 would that be a good keyword to use for a new domain name?

I'm not quite sure what the numbers for keyword research are so I hope I am in the right range.

It really depends on the name and the CPC.
ETA: Global or local - the 40,500?

I Go Hard = "Slanguage" for putting forth a lot of effort.

Don't be an arse and try to flip something you clearly have no knowledge of against me.

    It was global.

How do I do a search on the CPC?

First make sure you are paying attention to [Exact] search volume instead of broad (if this is in fact where your 40,500 is generated from).

To see the CPC click on the "Columns" button at the top right of your keyword results. Click the "Estimated Avg. CPC", click save and it will add this column to your results. Higher CPC amounts usually indicate more profitable niches.

Also, 125,000 results in quotes might be semi-competitive. Try using this search string in Google as well:
      intitle:keyword
If this number is significantly higher than the results returned with your keyword in quotes it tells you many more pages are specifically targeting that keyword.

The result is the same whether I use Exact or Broad.

    Average CPC is $0.09c

The search using intitle: gave a result of 1,010,000.

So this would tell me that registering a domain name with this specific keyword would be a bad idea?

Is this a one-word keyword? If not, it's unusual for broad to not be much higher than exact.

Not necessarily a bad idea, but pretty competitive. The CPC number indicates it's not being bid very higher by advertisers which might also tell you something. I usually shoot for over $1.

If it is a one-word keyword, keep in mind (depending on your monitization strategy) that one-word keywords are hardly "buying" keywords. Three words phrases tend to be the sweet spot, but there really isn't a hard and fast rule here. Ranking for a single word, though, will be extremely difficult in most cases since your competition is almost always authority sites with a lot of age.

It's a 3 word keyword using "affiliate" and "marketers" as 2 of them.

I would not only consider keywords when deciding what domain name to use for my online business. The first thing I think about is a name that reflects my vision for the business a catchy and short phrase that everyone will love. something that sounds good and could potentially make it the "next big thing"

        I couldn't agree more!
Search engines are machines that are programmed to retrieve documents. But it's humans who will read the text of the domain name, title and contents of the website. The psycholinguistic factor of a domain name should never be overlooked when choosing the right name. A domain name has to have appeal, catch the surfer's attention and stick in his memory. It should be catchy enough to arouse interest in viewing the webpage.

Well, the volume given in the GKT looks to be very good. It all depends on how you plan to monetize it.

Whenever looking to get into a market, I look at the first page of Google as the final determining factor. The other numbers tell you your level of overall competition, but the first page is who you are going up against directly. Do you think you can beat those sites? Use a tool like SEO Quake or SEO for Firefox to see things like PR and number of backlinks.

Keep in mind that getting on page one is one thing, but to realize the true potential of your chosen keyword you need to at least be in the top three. Of course, if your monetization and traffic strategies don't rely as much on Google, then most of these points are moot.

      Good luck

I know what you mean, but it's so hard to come up with something catchy that also has keywords in it.

First of all long domain names which consist of a string of un-hyphened words are not a good idea. Such domain names are more difficult to remember and the chances of typing such a name wrongly are greater. I suggest you choose a name like: affiliate-marketers.com or simply affiliates.com
What is your company's name? Maybe your company's name would be a better idea ... if your online business gains popularity then the name could become a trademark.

My question is: what you are going to do with this domain? Salespage? Blog?

If you use blog, it really doesn't matter so much. For example you can have blog URL dogtraining101.com but you will bring traffic with blog posts. Using permalinks, you rank your blog posts.

I hate having keyword in my domain (if i build niche blog). For example howtobuildmusclesupfast.com ...i mean seriously, i can't even read that... . I would better have musclebuilding101.com for example as domain...and blog post with this long tail keyword.

    But again...its just me...

I want to build a blog like the one I have at 12MMW.

OK so what about my 12MMW blog? I am getting bugger all traffic and absolutely no leads out of it. I have permalinks set to /%postname%/ so there shouldn't be a problem there. Whenever I search google for any of my blog posts/articles they are never on the first or even the first few pages. I'm even using Facebook and Twitter to try and get traffic and have even paid for 50,000 unique visitors in 30 days (which only started 5 days ago), but still no leads. What am I doing wrong? The URL?

I just had a look at both your blogs and I must say they're really well done. They look professional and the content is well written.
I can only think of 3 reasons why you're not getting the results you want:
[1] the domain name isn't catchy enough.
[2] The niche isn't interesting enough and/or over saturated .
[3] Plainly and simply put: you just haven't got enough luck

Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to remember that in the future.

Thanks for the compliments. It's more than likely a combination of all those 3 things if you ask me. I went with 12mmw as I thought that 12moneymakingways would be too long and hard to remember as you have already said.

Domain name is not quite as important as you may think. Unique, high quality content and backlinks are much more important.
