I'm on morphine right now so excuse me while I offend you..

Now I know why many people on this forum remind me of flies. Flies are attracted to sh*t. What's with all these completely useless threads on here that have nothing at all to do with money?

If breaking the rule about only talking about making money in this section carried the death penalty half of you would be dead.

The dentist gave me something called "laughing gas" and I thought I was in a world of eyeballs for 5 minutes... my head was out of this world... when I woke up I thought I was sitting in my underpants... I was fully clothed, but man that was SCARY.

Seriously a live appearance from Allen is a lot like Willy Wonka coming out of the chocolate factory. Rock star status for sure. I'm just trying to figure out if he is Gene Wilder (much, much cooler imo) or the nerdy version played by Depp. With the morphine I would he would be more like Johnny Depp.

Agreed 100%. Johnny Depp's performance as Wonka was just weird. Completely forgettable. He was good in Pirates of the Caribbean though.

There's this complete mystical aura of weirdness surrounding him, and it pervades every role that he plays as an actor.

it's Johnny Depp's "weirdness" that makes him so irresistable to women...

I just don't get it. I know that I think differently than a lot of women (or compared to the ones I know personally) but I just don't get the attraction with him. Then again, the ones that I find attractive get me strange looks sometimes.

I used to wonder why people thought he was so attractive, especially in his druggie musician days. In fact, he used to creep me out like no other. But since I saw Pirates of the Caribbean, I've been a fan, simply because he's a great actor. But would I give a second glance on the street? Not the way I see him dress on the red carpet - greasy, long hair, scraggly beard, terrible fashion...

                  Tina

it's not even his looks, Tina...it's his aura, his brilliance, and his creativity that does it for me.

and as far as I'm concerned, I love how he just doesn't really belong to the stereo-typical Hollywood mold.

the only other actor that surpasses him, imho, is Viggo Mortensen. He also is brilliant, highly creative ( I have a music cd of his!), and avant-garde, doesn't care about all the Hollywood hoopla.

I'm with you. Right now I don't care about Internet Marketing ... this is the Johnny Depp ... I have the hots for you thread.

So in my dream, I was with Johnny, my daughter (who is also a big fan) and whoever that French girl is he hangs out with.

After a short while, he wanted to be with me ... told Frenchie to go home. She pouted, but did as she was told. I sent my daughter away ....

By the way, I never knew ladies have hots for Johnny Depp. I always thought he was kind of... never mind. I can feel the heat coming from the eyes of the ladies. Oh, did I say I'm his biggest fan?

I have to side with your wife on this one - JD is definitely hotter than GW. He is a little strange though and Willy Wonka isn't the only strange movie he's been in - he tends to do a lot of strange roles - I'm thinking perhaps he is just a very strange person - but still hot

Its his kind of aloof strangeness that makes women feel a little scared and nervous... and they may not know why, but they think they kinda like that feeling for some reason! lol

I made $400 off Don Lapre's system even though I spent $1200... at least it drove me to the WF searching for answers though!

That ad in the enquirer wasnt nearly as good as one here at the wf.

              Edit: (translation) I lost $800.

I'm not sure about it "taking off the edge" my itch got much bigger. It also took ages for the pink stain to disappear after rubbing it on the affected area.

A few years back I broke my arm and the doctor set it wrong.

In about 4 days the Dr. office called and informed me that I was going to have to come in and rebreak my arm and reset it.

First they gave me morphine then they put my arm on the gurney and placed a wedge under it. With all his might the Dr. put his knee on my arm and crunched down as it "snapped."

Are you OK he asked me.

Putting my good arm on the wedge I said, "Now break this one please." True Story.

I did not do that well with the ads, but made some nice $$ off of his
idea of helping people get money back from the insurance they bought
when they got a mortgage and paid it off.

Oh it most definitely did and probably still does work, for certain offers. It wasn't a lie, but you'll always have the haters who say it was a scam. I have no idea about his customer service, what he may have did after the sale etc., but the actual classified ad strategy worked if you have your own product and find the right offer that clicks...

Well, exactly... Some of the 'super affiliates' do pretty much exactly the same, but on a much larger/faster scale... I.e., google adwords/facebook advertising, etc... It's a similar idea, just a different medium, and they've been incredibly successful. Plus, now you have the benefit of technology with split testing, software that creates 1000's of ads, competition/spying software, etc, etc... to speed up the process significantly.

I think if one were to go with an IM education to the 'offline' world and do classified ads through newspapers and magazines, especially with the understanding of proper copy, ROI, offer, headline, pricing, positioning, etc, etc, that it would be very easy to be successful with it right now... Would take a bit of work initially, but once you had a system that worked for you, very easy to duplicate.

Wow, that's something cuz he was one of the 1st IM people from whom I got ripped off BIG time. He sold me a fitness gear reseller site for thousands of dollars promising Google front page advertising to get a ton of traffic to my site. He did what he promised only except that he promised to everyone who bought it. So 100 exactly same clone copies wallpapered the entire front page for a few days. And after few weeks, he went bankrupt.

I even tried tiny classified ads spending so much money only to find out that it was completely saturated and didn't make a single dime. I even bought the 1-800 number and the voiceover script and everything. After all this, I made nada~ Absolutely NOTHING to show for.

            Hi Joe,

Did you try your own stuff?

I doubt very seriously anything he provided you, as in scripts and so forth, would work. "Stuff in a box - Ready made" rarely works for very long, if at all with something like this.

If you have your own thing though the classified ad strategy works. Not easy, but it works and can make huge money when you find the right combination.

My big issue with it was that it wasn't scalable. I was doing about three or four short reports a day for $19.95 (short reports on how to write your own short reports and sell them with classified ads... sound familiar?), but that was about two hours of work, all things considered.

So I started doing the math on what was necessary to make this work at a higher scale. I need people; the people need to be paid; that's overhead, so I need more sales to cover the overhead.

Which is more work, which needs more people, which needs... which needs... which needs... and in the end I've got a small army of people working in a sweatshop, and my margin is like 4% - which was a big honkin' income, but the investment was huge.

And I thought "if I made one little misstep, like just hypothetically if I were to start selling something like... say... VITAMINS - which I knew nothing about, and turned out to be mostly worthless, I could lose it all and be not only completely broke but seven figures in debt overnight."

I wasn't prepared to take that risk, so I stopped the classified ad thing until I could figure it out. Don, on the other hand, did take that risk... and lost his stake.

The one thing I always liked about Don is that he was an honest man. He really did use these business models, and he really did make money from them, and he never asked you to take a risk he wasn't taking himself.

But one of those risks popped up and decimated his whole damn business.

The tiny one-bedroom apartment isn't an unreasonable hypothesis.

I cannot help but wonder how people don't know this. I understood the "upsells and continuity" trap when I was about nine years old. How do you get to a point in your life where you have bank accounts and credit cards without knowing that?

Oh, I'm sorry I wasn't as bright as you because I did not know what upsells and continuity trap when I was nine years old. But didn't you say Don Lepre was your IM mentor? IM mentor who got me by selling upsells and continuity trap (that's exactly your word, right?) that cost me thousands of dollars without making a single dime. I don't know if that's something to tell people about...

When did you know what they were? Did you understand them immediately after your experience with Don, or did you need something else to happen? How did you ultimately learn about them?

Because, hey, you can cop an attitude and worry about your ego... or we can talk about something that might actually matter to the rest of the world.

But didn't you say Don Lepre was your IM mentor?
Would you like to know what was wrong with Don's company?

Don thought he was his customer. More to the point, he thought his customers were him.

So when he sold you a 900 number business, he thought you immediately went "wait... 900 number... tiny classified ads... you can put those in magazines, too!" and ran off to place ads in Swank and Gallery and Club. (Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler had much higher ad rates with no better response, so the ROI was lower.) But that's not what you did.

Instead, you sat at your kitchen table and thought "WTF am I going to do with a 900 number?"

But Don would never do that, so it didn't occur to him that anyone else would.

The same thing was true across his entire empire; he simply never knew what normal people would do with his information. And he was only interested in success stories.

But the failures are much more instructive.

Don taught me that. He never did it himself - but he taught me that all the same. And it was a valuable lesson, no less so than his fundamental rule of "never do anything yourself when someone else can do it for $5 an hour."

I honestly didn't mean to insult you. Olive branch and all that. I was just saying, predatory sales tactics are as old as the hills. How do people get into adulthood without knowing about them?

Let me ask you a question. As an internet marketer, isn't that what you do as well? Upsells and continuity is what we ALL do because it works. Go through any hot CB product that's related to IM and see which one does not have upsells?

Don's fitness gear clone sites were upsells and had money back guarantee. Does that answer your question?

Did Don's fitness site upsell work?

Would you have made that upsell?

Imagine that you could see the future, and you knew that the person about to click "yes" on your upsell would have the same experience you're describing today as having been "ripped off" by Don.

Does it still "work" when he takes your upsell?

Do you still feel that you should make that upsell?

How do you know whether your upsell is any better for your customers than Don's was for you? Does it matter?

              Lol.

Easy. Go to pretty much any college or university campus in North America, frosh week you have 'other' students (which cc card companies have hired) -- trying to get students signed up for cc cards. With nice incentives too (anything from cool electronics/toys, to $50 just for getting card). At 'introductory' rates of 10% (which jump up to 30% after, say 5-6 months). But you get 'points' the more you spend. So the big focus is 'spend spend spend!' and 'pay later!'

Then, you get other cc companies, (one in particular that had to 'slightly' restructure their plan for 'questionable' business practises, after I think it was about 10 years) that not only hand out cc cards like they are candy, but set the limit at $500. When a student gets close to the $500 limit -- they send another card to the student so the student can pay his current 'debt' (monthly payments rather) with the new card.

They try and get the students laden with at least $3-$4k before they start trying to 'collect'.

And so many people are also encouraged to get something 'no money down! no interest until 1 year later". Or get a bank loan. Or get a lease. Or get a mortgage.

$50-100/month seems like nothing. Until you have 10-20 of these $50-100/month payments and then realize that you are now just trying to 'get by'.

Cellphone (+ 'extra' plans). Cable TV. Internet Connection. Car insurance. Car/Lease payment. Mortgage. Newspaper/Magazine Subscriptions. Telephone. Hydro. Electricity. Student loan payments.

Then miscellaneous things like $5 daily cafe lattes ($150/month), fast food ($10/day = $300/month), etc, etc.

              It adds up pretty quickly.

Most people that get caught in this I think simply don't see it coming, or just don't think things through all the way... And a lot of people live in the $20-40k/year range, and after taxes, etc -- they barely have enough to go out for a nice dinner. But they don't realize that -- and instead figure they can just 'put' it on their card, and pay later.

So, for a lot of people, it's really easy to get caught in that trap, and sometimes difficult for people to see how to get out of it. (Especially ones that have become accustomed to living a certain type of lifestyle -- and changing that lifestyle to reduce or eliminate their debt would mean 'losing' certain amenities that they have become accustomed to).

But there, again. You're seventeen or eighteen years old. You're clearly not mentally deficient, or you wouldn't be in college. How do you not know these things?

I'm seriously asking. This isn't a "look at how smart I am" thing. I don't understand where people come from that they don't understand the basics of predatory sales tactics. How do you make it almost into your twenties without ever being aware that salesmen will readily take advantage of you?

See, this is important to my business. I make it a point to just plain not use predatory sales tactics, in the expectation that people will notice their absence. But if people don't know about them... they can't tell I'm not using them. This is something about my market that I don't grasp. What sort of people are these? I mean, surely, some of you used to be those people. Why were you those people?

                • Hi CD,

It's got nothing (really) to do with intelligence...

It's just (a) Most 17-18 year olds don't really have much of a financial education, and (b) even if they had the opportunity for one, they don't see the need for it.

Many (obviously not all) students that make it into college do have some kind of financial backing either from family, scholarships, sponsorships, or the like. If they can't afford it (initially), they are given a loan with the (implied) promise that once they get an education, paying it back will be a piece of cake. Many students are also simply being used to ask their mom or dad for some cash -- and then the parents provide it because they want their kids to have an 'easy' life, or have it 'easier' than they did. The parents (many times) don't realize they are doing a dis-service to their children, because their children aren't learning how to fend for themselves, they are learning how to live off of someone else.

Generally speaking, the kids that 'had it rough' growing up are the ones that figure things out pretty quickly. If they are worried whether there will be food on the table, or whether they will have electricity this month -- or instead it will be saved for groceries -- they very quickly learn the value of a dollar.

Also, it's how people are marketed to...

If you think about it... If students were 'financially' aware and 'taught' that they should pay their CC bills on time... the credit card companies would be out of business. Why? They make their living (and a killing at it) from the interest.

Credit card companies have virtually no interest in making this financial knowledge and management easily accessible and available. Why should they, or why would they want to? It would hurt their bottom line if people actually followed the advice.

Cigarette commercials don't say "Hey! Smoke a pack of cigarettes so you can get bad breath, yellow teeth and maybe get health issues!". No. They say "Ooh! Imagine how COOOL you will be. Do you want to be COOOL? Or do you want to be the nerd in the corner?"

Beer commercials don't say "Hey! Drink this every day so you become a drunk, have bad breath and violent mood swings or just pass out. Oh yeah, and maybe have health issues too." No. They show a bunch of guys on a superbowl Sunday being "MEN" because they are drinking. They show a guy walking into a bar and being a "MAN" because of drop dead gorgeous women grabbing a guy, because of the beer he is drinking. They don't show him getting drunk, spitting on the girl as he's trying to ask her number, and say 'Hwey thar sweetee. Aye theenks s'p youse are like Hwots. i mean reallys HOTS. Do you want to do its NOW are LATERS s'thp?"

And for the 'AXE' (deoderant) commercials... They are almost like soft-core porn videos, except with (half) your clothes on. Do you think the company that markets axe deoderant would be nearly as successful if they ran a commercial that said: "Hi. We make deoderant. It's really good. So buy it."?

                  Bottomline...

It's marketing. It's selling the dream. It's selling the 'easy' life.

Many credit card companies market their cards as being 'just like' immediate cash that you 'don't' (initially) have to work for. They've got a lot of hot buttons. Easy. Instant. Convenient.

Then they use fear tactics as a double whammy. If you "don't" get a credit card -- what happens when you on a vacation and lose your CASH? Oh no! This guy had a credit card. This guy didn't. Who is enjoying their vacation now? (Well duh. Who carries around $2k in cash in their pocket as they get off a plane? Probably not many people. But the commercial 'forgets' to mention that).

So people get scared. And then the commercials show an easy solution -- get this credit card -- and ALL your problems magically disappear!

So that's how people can easily get hooked.

See, that's the thing. Doesn't everyone know THIS? Aren't we all aware that there are pros and cons to everything, but the salesman will never tell you the cons? Forget the question of money and math. Don't we all know that salesmen sell the dream by leaving out all the scary parts?

I mean, we've all heard "sell the sizzle and not the steak," but an old wet shoe sizzles too. "Cream rises to the top, but turds float." How do people make it all the way to adulthood without grasping that?

Look, you're on the schoolyard. It's been snowing. Some kid walks up to you and says "I'll bet you can't eat a bite of snow off the ground without using your hands." So you either try it, and the jackhole pushes you over so your face goes into the snow, or you immediately grasp that this is some sort of trick.

But once you try it, you're not falling for it again, are you?

Have you said "yes" more than once when asked if you'd like a Hertz donut?

Have you let more than one person show you how to play "52 pickup" with a deck of cards?

I simply dont understand how you get into your late teens without understanding that salespeople will take advantage of you, and they do not feel bad about it. They're standing around laughing while you wipe off the snow, or stumble around holding your crotch, or pick the cards off the floor... or try to pay your credit cards and market your fitness site.

What exactly is the mitigating contextual factor when you call Don Lapre to order a classified ads course, and the operator tries to sell you a fitness site?

I mean, you see a salesman on TV. You pick up the phone and call him to order something. And someone tries to sell you something else.

Where's the context alteration there? It's a salesman! He's trying to sell you something! You knew that going in! Why is it somehow being "ripped off" when you say "why, sure, I will buy this thing" and then don't use the money-back guarantee you've been offered?

                    • Hi CD,

No, not everyone is aware of certain things, nor born knowing everything. Everyone has different experiences. And plus, sometimes emotions override logic.

I've been reading some of the other posts here by others, and didn't realize that perhaps some of your questions were rhetorical? If you are arguing for arguments sake -- then you proved my point below with your examples of the snow, card game, etc, etc. Those individuals weren't "born" knowing it, and were susceptible to it initially.

If you genuinely don't understand -- then ExRat has a few good points. Everyone has different experiences which has shaped his or her world, which can subsequently affect his or her understanding of it.

And, again, many times emotions override logic. For example, with drinking.

The thought of being 'cool', or being accepted by your peers overrides the 'logic' that 'logically' it wouldn't make sense to drink. Or the fact that a lot of business meetings are 'closed' by taking a drink (i.e., asian cultures with 'sake' or 'baijiu').

'Studies' have shown countless time and time again that alcohol impairs people's ability to make logical decisions, and in fact sometimes make really poor (or 'stupid') ones -- yet they do it time and time again. Why? It's not 'logical' to do it... Healthwise it doesn't make sense... but being accepted by ones peers because 'everyone does' it overrides that. Or doing it because your belief that girls will like you more overrides that. Or doing it to close a business deal because it is just an accepted part of society.

Furthermore, what you drink says a lot about you too.

Which would drink amongst business colleagues? An Appletini, Dirty Martini or Whiskey on the rocks? If you were watching a football game, are you going to go get a Mint Julep while your buddies are drinking beer? Or... if you go to a party to pick up a girl, are you going to be drinking a 40 oz Malt Liqour to impress her?

Better still... go to a logging camp, invite all these guys to a round of drinks, and then you drink a Cosmopolitan or Daiquiri... See the reaction.

                      Hope that helps...

How do people not get that?

                        Precisely.

Super Affiliate has had an experience I don't understand. I'd like to know more.

That's it. I don't think anyone's inferior or deserves to be blamed or there's some sort of competition going on.

I just want to know more about SA's experience. Not so I can judge it, or critique it, or dismiss it - but so I can understand it.

I've done a piss-poor job of communicating that, and I'm sorry. But what's done is done. What's said is said. I didn't want to make anyone feel bad, and it doesn't make that any better to say "I am was drunk!" about it. It wasn't the whisky talking, it was me.

So again, I'm sorry if I upset anyone, and SA: I really am interested in hearing more about your experience, if you'd like to discuss it. And if not, hey, that's fine too.

lol, ok, no worries. I suppose therein lies both one of the biggest 'benefits' and at the same time biggest 'drawbacks' of alcohol

Dude, that's what I was trying to do, and I couldn't. It didn't make sense, because it's just entirely foreign to my own experience.

Kind of like I don't know how menstrual cramps feel. My girlfriend says "it's like getting kicked in the balls," and I scratch my head and go "How do you know what getting kicked in the balls feels like?" and she scratches her head and we just stand around feeling like idiots.

Perhaps Paul Likes you and is trying to give you a wake up call caliban.

One time you said something inspiring that changed my life, and I have tried to repay you several times, by telling you "hey dude, you changed my life...", even responded or noticed I existed.

Fact is, I have been a warrior for ten years, and have been a millionaire twice in that time... however you have yet, despite my attempts to show my appreciation , even given me the time of day...

Perhaps you should re examine your position... because at one point I was ingratiated to you..., and I am a guy who is headed to the top. I still appreciate your advice , but appreciating you as a "big brother" is questionable... sadly.

With so much knowledge, and the ability to help so many, to my disappointment I watch you use that talent mostly to tell other people they havent got a clue".

There are alot of peole on here with big radio shows and huge lists... who have asked me to interview with them... but Im not stupid... these are stars who will eventually burn out... if I ever gave anyone an interview or the time of day, it would be "CALEB"... he's a star thats "RISING".

Now Im certainly no one to revere, not exactly a force to be reckoned with or anything, just the voice of your conscious at this moment... saying "hey look brother I appreciated you and you acted like I wasnt there..."

Sorry, fortunately with this one you may still be able to pass the chivas and make up!

My support will still go to Caleb though, because I know he will pass it forward with a noble heart!

Not that you would care... but maybe if you do we are seeing progress.

I never in a million years thought you were serious.

I thought it was that old joke, where you tell people how important they are to you, and make them try to guess what they did.

Then, after they guess for a while, you ridicule and humiliate them in public for thinking they ever meant anything to someone like you.

Dude, I'm really sorry, because I know how that feels - when you keep telling someone how important they are to you, and they just don't seem to hear anything. That sucks, and I really hate that I put you through that.

I'm just inherently suspicious of compliments that happen in public. It's one thing if I get a PM or an email or a Skype message, because that's discreet, you know? But when it's in public, I feel like I'm being put on the spot and I have to say something, and I don't know what to say.

I'm uncomfortable with it, you know? I just don't like the idea of that much responsibility. I like to get ****faced on the FNC and fall out of my chair and get banned for taking my clothes off. I like being the guy who does that. That's just sort of who I am. And on some level, I feel like if too many people are listening to me, I won't be able to do that anymore.

LOL. I almost started a post about this earlier in defense of your percieved viciousness.

What a lot of people don't get is that Caliban is a Ready Fire Aim guy if there ever was one. Getting to see him on video on a regular basis on FNC, it's apparent that his zest for life is all consuming.

The reality is Caliban is not at all malicious, he's just one of those 'in your face' guys due to his sheer enthusiasm for interaction. What is missing here is the personality context because that part of the equation is hard to get across using simple text.

Imho, the Ready Fire Aim approach on some of his posts doesn't allow others to see the real Caliban that the rest of us are privy to.

Am I making excuses for his behavior here?

Seeing a reference to Caliban and privy in the same sentence is food for thought.

Seriously, I love to read Caliban's comments. I don't always understand them, but I always enjoy them. Interesting note: Caliban gave a response some while ago in another thread, and his comment gave me an idea for a niche for me to tackle. What I didn't realize was how much work I was letting myself in for. It will be an authority site, and to do it I have to become an authority myself. Whew!

Anyway........thanks, Caliban, for giving us (okay, me) a different perspective.

                                    Hi CDarklock,

At risk of sounding like a know-it-all myself -

I never in a million years thought you were serious.

I thought it was that old joke, where you tell people how important they are to you, and make them try to guess what they did.

Then, after they guess for a while, you ridicule and humiliate them in public for thinking they ever meant anything to someone like you.

It's just like the Hertz donut and 52 pickup. You only fall for it once.
...this is why I think it's better for the average nine year old to be protected by adults and therefore allowed to stay a little naive for a while. If we are allowed to become so cynical that we expect ridicule and humiliation at every turn, we might find ourselves dishing it out ourselves inappropriately in order to be the one that got the first 'shot' in.

I hope I'm not donning the robe of the hypocrite there, but instead sharing some wisdom from mistakes I've admittedly made myself.

I'm uncomfortable with it, you know? I just don't like the idea of that much responsibility. I like to get ****faced on the FNC...
I used to be something like that (and perhaps still am) and although no one ever really spelt it out in black and white, in retrospect I think many people were dying to explain to me that the changes I craved in my life lay just beyond the point where I become comfortable with that responsibility.

Roger, there is the other side of the coin too...people who get compliments
and let it go so clear to their heads that they think the sun rises and sets
                                      around them.

I know...I used to be one of those people (admitting it big time in public)
and it was NOT an attractive quality.

I have since learned a little humbleness and have come to realize that
I ain't no better than anybody else.

When you put things into perspective, we're all just flawed human beings.

The odd thing is, these two opposing outcomes probably stem from similar root-causes

In a perfect world, everybody would be provided with the things they need to believe in themselves and then, perhaps, we would all be less flawed - but we might have less things to keep busy with.

                                          Hi Alexa,

Reminds me of that cool song by Blur - Coffee & TV -

Do you feel like a chain store?
                                          Practically floored

                                          One of many zeros
                                          Kicked around bored
Your ears are full but your empty
                                          Holding out your heart
                                          To people who never really
                                          Care how you are
                                          And especially for CD -

Your ears are full of the language
                                          There's wisdom there you're sure
                                          'Til the words start slurring
And you can't find the door
                                          Hi Bill,

Am I making excuses for his behavior here?
Perhaps you (or CD himself) may not realise that we may have seen the same things, but are 'helping' to highlight 'that part of the equation' in our own individual ways, but for the same positive reasons?

I think there are certain things you can't be told. It's the whole zen thing: when the student is ready, the teacher appears.

It's funny John mentioned Caleb, because I've really been looking closely at Caleb lately. He's been something of a role model for me, which is strange, because he's 25 years my junior. But I keep looking at him and seeing what other people seemed to think I should have been at his age... and it's not at all what I was. It's what I was trying to be, but I had no clue how to be that.

                      CD,

The salesman who points out a negative is so rare I remember one from long ago.

I came into a little bit of money in my 20s or early 30s and I rented a Lincoln. I loved that car so much that I decided to buy one so I drove my rented Lincoln to the dealer and told the salesman I wanted one just like it.

He realized that I had some "found money" with me and was ready and spend it on something that he would have received a hefty commission."

He looked across his desk at me and said, in a very serious voice, "Young man, a car is not an investment. You should invest your money not spend it on a car."

I left feeling dejected. Here I had cash and I couldn't even buy the car I wanted.

I'll never forget that salesman, his eyes piercing mine and his Stearn fatherly demeanor. It's affected me and my dealings with others over the years more than he would ever know.

How do people not get that?

Most people can instantly tell the difference between the salesman trying to make a buck and the salesman trying to make a difference.

The latter variety walk away from a lot of commissions, and the former variety shake their heads. But when times are rough and sales are slow, it's the latter variety that still get paid.

Man, I can't believe this conversation is STILL going on... CD, I see that you are an intelligent man. And you're very good at articulating your thought process. But are you using that brilliance to build up and edify others so that they can make a better decision next time or are you using it to prove that others are stupid and that they get discouraged?

Hey, you want to know what's funny?

I have a corporate board meeting in an hour.

                                And I'm hammered.

I can't wait to read the official minutes.

You know, I try to do the former, but sometimes I end up doing the latter.

And I simply don't understand why. It doesn't seem like there's a simple answer.

I never meant to insult or belittle you. I was inconsiderate and spoke rashly; I'm sorry. You're not stupid, and I don't want to discourage you.

I was hoping that knowing where you came from, when you felt Don's upsell left you "ripped off," could help me identify and avoid upsells that might leave my customers feeling "ripped off."

And I thought if you explained that here, it wouldn't just help me - it would help other people. It would "build up and edify" them.

That's what I was trying to do. Not with my "brilliance," but with yours. I know I'd be better off with the benefit of it.

Sometimes I fail miserably at what I'm trying to accomplish. I don't know why that happens. Hindsight is usually 20/20, but the first couple hours? I'm just lost.

I'd give you a drink, if you were here. But you're not. So I'll drink yours for you.

That's more like it. If that was an apology, I gladly accept it. If you still try to understand why I fell for the upsell, here's the story. One night, I was watching the TV and Don Lepre sold me on selling tiny ads. He looked sincere and had lots of success stories. So I called the number and bought it.

The next day, one of the sales reps called me up and recommended this fitness gear site to make more money. He said if I sold just 2 of them, I could recuperate my investment back. Also he said he would put me on the 1st page of Google for the keyword "cheap fitness gear". He even offered me 100% money back. So I thought, why not? The offer was very enticing and I got nothing to lose.

Fast forward a little bit, my site WAS on the 1st page of Google, only except with 100 other clone sites like I mentioned before. I wasn't getting any traffic and I knew nothing about IM at that time. So what I did was what everyone would do, ask for a refund.

It took a week to get a response. Then another 2 weeks passed. They didn't have any intention to respect their money back guarantee. After few months? He went bankrupt. So I lost all my investment.

                              End of story...

                              Satisfied now?

Okay, that's a very different story than I had imagined.

Here's the story I kind of had in my head: you got this fitness site, and didn't know what to do with it. You sat there, thinking about what to do with it. The guarantee period expired. And you said "WTF, I was ripped off."

I saw a lot of people do that. I'm glad you're not one of them. I do feel kind of bad you were caught in the crossfire as Don's business collapsed, but hey - you weren't stupid about it. You had your risk management in place, which is more than most people do.

I do feel like Don gets blamed for something which is ultimately not a scam, but a failure. Don never managed risk. Or, more correctly, his risk management plan was always "ignore it and hope it doesn't happen." So when it came time to pay the piper, Don got totally hosed.

And just to be clear: yes, it was an apology. I'd elucidate more, but I have a corporate board meeting... and I'm TOTALLY HAMMERED... which should be fun.

Oh, believe me, the fun part is discovering that two of your other four board members are Latter-Day Saints.

You know, I keep wondering whether a bottle of single malt scotch whisky would be improved by adding a split vanilla bean.

A bottle of rum sure as hell is. So is vodka. Gin, not so much, but it's got the botanicals in it already.

Wait, what were we talking about?

Sweet, only Allen Says starts a thread about morphine and 5 pages later we have a few nuggets about classified ads, Don Lapre, continuity model, and more interesting stuff breaks out. I even learned that I guess Caliban gets wasted and naked in public? Glad I missed that one.

Don Lapre was my first exposure to the world of direct marketing. I remember it very well... late one night, hating my corporate job and here is this dude talking about "tiny classified ads", I was like what the hell is this all about. I never ordered it though but I did buy a couple books on mail order business which got me so excited but I had no idea of how to create my own products until this interwebs thing came along a couple years later.

My first exposure to forced continuity was buying a bunch of tape cassettes (yea I'm old) for a penny from Columbia House. And damn it if I didn't forget to send in a few of those "no thank you" postcards back so I got stuck with crappy tapes for 20 bucks a pop. That penny cost me a few bucks before I set free from the club.

I know you guys are having some fun with this, but seriously, this great forum is changing a bit. Take one liners for example, "great info", "its a useful post", "thanks for the info" and... I mean, why dont we stop this kind of posts. Its so obvious these people are only trying to get the post count up. Nothing wrong with getting your post count up, so you can have live links and so on, after a lot of people use forums to build backlinks and trust. But, why not just hit the thanks button, if you are so dying to thank the person?...

And lately, there are 2 different trends happening here. One is the "guru bashing" that sbucciarel mentioned. And the other is "newbie bashing". Its like some people are here to just make fun of a newbie who asks a question that might sound simple to old timers, and others are here to say making money online isn't possible because they did everything the guru told them to do (for a week or so), but they didn't make any money and nothing is working.

Here is a thought, please take it as a discussion point and nothing more.... Don't you think one of the reasons the main forum is getting so 'off topic' as it were, is because every feasible make money online technique already has its own forum?

CPA, SEO, Offline ... 90% of what people make money off of have their own forums, but everyone wants to be on the main forum so they talk about things that don't go in the other forums , but don't necessarily have anything to do with making money.

I am guessing the more popular a topic gets the quicker it gets it's own Forum. I was guessing one of the next ones would be a Article Marketing Forum. I was wrong it was the offline forum.

So I guess what I am asking is as someone who has spent a bit of time on the forum I am at times confused as to what should go on the main Forum Imagine how newbies must feel.

So what is the solution, Maybe have more clear instructions what is expected on the main forum (again I am not being confrontational just wondering).

Also I see a bunch of people lambasted for talking about something that has already been spoken about before, but this forum is getting so big very few things will be all new.

What is the solution, any thoughts?

There is no "solution." Only an attempt at balance.

It's like a teeter-totter. You always end up slanting one way or the other, but the goal is to keep from going too far in one direction. You don't let the "big kid" (in this case, the one with the loudest mouth) settle things to where they can't be moved.

The goal should be to get it right, while realizing that the best we can really do is to make it better.

I see I was bad mouthed on a blog because I agreed with you Paul, Oh well here I go again.

I think you guys are doing a great job of balancing the 'teeter Totter'.

And I believe that the balance will never be allowed to completely fall to one side or the other.

The forum still offers huge value and because of it I think it is growing immensely .... Newbies for a while will dilute some value added until they start giving back.

CD, your fighting a losing battle here. Free will isn't a valid argument.

You are smart enough to know that just because something is crystal clear to you that doesn't mean everyone else in the world will see things the same way you do.

You see right through the sales pitches and thats great, but the vast majority of people do not understand sales processes and have no clue about bait and switch and do not understand the processes being used against them.

Also, before you start ranting about the evils of someone else's sales pitches you migh want to look at your own. I've listened to you in the weekly chats and I've seen your sales pages. You are not exactly hype free yourself.

    Caliban,

Like I said... You use it as a tool for abuse. The fact that you're good at debating has nothing - nothing - to do with whether you're good at thinking clearly. Or even if you're right.

Your response to my comment is a perfect example of that.

We were several messages into this discussion before it ever occurred to me that "I don't understand, please explain" could in any way be considered abusive.

I didn't mean it as a challenge, a value judgment, or an insinuation.

      I just wanted the explanation.

I didn't want to offend anyone, and I certainly wasn't trying to be insulting.

And with that, I'll go back to my drinking.

      Paul

      Paul! Wow man...

Do you think Caliban is kidding when he makes the jokes about him being hammered on his way to the board meeting or him drinking himself silly regularly?

He is not kidding, not for a moment...

How many people have you known in your life that can "think clearly" when they are sloshed?

I have known some drunks in my life...

The thing that amazes me most about Caliban is that his premises are frequently lucid, clear and sensible, even when he is toasted... LOL

He is definitely not the same kind of "drunk" my mother is...

I can actually (usually) stand to listen to hm for more than a couple minutes when he is lit...

When my mom calls, I am usually like, "Well, I gotta go... (My dog just ran into the ceiling fan...)"

I found myself agreeing with most of what Caliban was saying right up to:

But his over-arching point -- it seems to me -- is that we all know people will buy something, never use it or make the most of what they were given, and then blame us for scamming them...

So, if one of "our own" feels this way too, perhaps that person will have the insight necessary to "tell us" how we can prevent our future customers from seeing us in the same light...

If one of our own can use his insight to tell us when not to upsell, then we can prevent these things from becoming an issue for us in the future...

Something is happening to people during this process...

If they were "ripped off" in times past, and they use the same techniques in their business today, something has changed...

Either that person has learned how to upsell his customers, preventing his customers from determining that he is ripping them off, OR he is not worried about it anymore for other reasons -- like maybe he just don't care anymore...

I don't know what the answer is, but the questions posed, if you excuse Caliban's demeaning language, are questions that could be useful to marketers if understood and answered...

When I first noticed the OP's statement that Don Lapre ripped him off, my original gut instinct was to ask him whether "Lapre ripped him off", or whether "he ripped himself off" by expecting that Lapre would offer him a business model that would come without problems and challenges...

As business owners, we are constantly challenged to overcome problems and objections...

Since I started smoking in high school and took the free credit cards in college, I certainly did not get it by 9 or 19 either...

Nothing worth doing comes without problems and challenges...

And what worked for me, may not always work for others, because they will not implement it exactly as I have done...

    Cathy,
I see I was bad mouthed on a blog because I agreed with you
I have the same response to that which I've always had: Define your own life, on your own terms.

What other people think or say is their business. Don't concern yourself with it. Children and idiots will always look for a way to make things fit their preconceptions. Adults know that their interpretations may not match reality.

Your goals are the only things that should matter to you. Not what some random person thinks they should be. If you're happy, ignore the people who want to take that away from you. Those people are not your friends, they are not your family, and they are not important - to you.

They have the right to be what and who they want to be, and to say what they want to say. That does not make them the guardians of your soul.

Do what you believe, and pay no attention to anything else.

    Caliban,
    I just wanted the explanation.
Based on previous examples, I find that unlikely. You wanted him to present you with something else with which you could argue.

You're waaaaay too concerned with being "right," and waaay too casual about grokking the other guy's position.

It's possible you could both be right. Or wrong. Or both. Or somewhere in the middle...

        Hi CDarklock,

We were several messages into this discussion before it ever occurred to me that "I don't understand, please explain" could in any way be considered abusive.
That's not how it unfolded at all.

Your first reply to superaffiliate was -
        Quote:

They got you on the upsells and the continuity. That's always been how they get you.

I cannot help but wonder how people don't know this. I understood the "upsells and continuity" trap when I was about nine years old. How do you get to a point in your life where you have bank accounts and credit cards without knowing that?
You didn't think that this would read as being offensive? All it does is demonstrate what a blinkered, self-centred view of the world you have - you sell copywriting but have no understanding of the fact that people have different experiences and therefore different perspectives and therefore different learning curves in a wide variety of areas?

Then you follow up like this -
        Quote:

When did you know what they were? Did you understand them immediately after your experience with Don, or did you need something else to happen? How did you ultimately learn about them?

Because, hey, you can cop an attitude and worry about your ego... or we can talk about something that might actually matter to the rest of the world.
...but you don't comprehend that it's actually YOU with the attitude and YOU demonstrating your ego problem?

You haven't even noticed that the world is full of people who are blissfully (or sometimes unblissfully) unaware that 'salesmen sell the dream' at the age of nine?

I'll explain to you some of the reasons for this that I'm aware of in two different ways. You might want to take note of the subtle difference in the way I phrase the two different answers -

Answer version 1 - some nine year olds are so overloaded with stresses, fears, confusion and the consequences of neglect that many of their 'normal' learning processes take a back seat in favour of survival priorities.

Answer version 2 - some nine year olds have been spoilt and have had attention lavished upon them and adults have taken the time to introduce them to some of the 'ways of the world'.

Do you see how in version 2 I slipped in a few words that insinuate that anyone who does understand these things at nine years old has been spoilt?

If you can see the difference and understand the unpleasantness of the sweeping generalisation/insinuation, then you might also be able to see that your own posts are riddled with them.

If you can't see that, then perhaps you should reconsider acting like such a pompous know it all.

It's really easy to pick apart things that people say -

And it was a valuable lesson, no less so than his fundamental rule of "never do anything yourself when someone else can do it for $5 an hour."
So if a friend asks you to go and look after their private island for three months and they'll pay you $500 a day for doing it, it's wise to outsource that job to someone else for $5 an hour?

If you light yourself on fire, the world will pay to watch you burn
Has it never crossed your mind or caught your attention that the world is absolutely full to the brim with people who would risk their lives to put you out if you were on fire, even if they have never seen or heard of you before and even if it was you that set yourself alight?

They might be the kind of people who you could easily 'tuck up like a kipper' with some corny sales-tactic bait and switch - they might be middle-aged and STILL not understand that there are many psychopaths out there who have never had a functioning conscience and who are utterly incapable of putting themselves in someone elses shoes due to their over-riding narcissism.

(See how easy it is to slip in unpleasant insinuations?)

They may have been incredibly naive at the age of nine years old, but those people are being themselves and making the decision to be themselves every minute of every hour of every day for the whole of their lives - they understand the real secrets of 'wealth'.

Unlike the cheesy artificial salesman, who deludes himself that he is achieving something worthwhile with his time, but in fact he is the sheepiest of the sheep - he has fallen hook, line and sinker for the bait provided by the ruling classes who surreptitiously enslave his mind, body and soul - and most importantly - his time.

But always, that cheesy, smug, salesman will swan around, shooting his mouth off, thinking he's the sharpest pencil in the case.

        Have a nice day!

Honestly, no, I didn't. I was simply shocked at what I was reading. I didn't consider my words as carefully as I should have, because I was being relaxed and groovy and just going with the flow of the conversation.

...but you don't comprehend that it's actually YOU with the attitude and YOU demonstrating your ego problem?
What I'm actually doing there is trying to focus on the question, instead of me learning something when I was nine. I didn't say that to make anyone feel inferior or embarrassed, and honestly I'm rather embarrassed that I said it. I shouldn't have said it, because it really does sound arrogant and pompous, but it's been said already. Water under the bridge.

And I had not, at the time of this message, perceived that the question itself could be seen as offensive. Because nobody is mentioning that. They're all bound up in what seems like "ha ha, I learned this when I was nine, you're all stupid." Which isn't what I meant, and honestly I just wanted to hurry past that and let it drop. There's no way to fix that. You just try to get away from it, so it can be forgotten.

You haven't even noticed that the world is full of people who are blissfully (or sometimes unblissfully) unaware that 'salesmen sell the dream' at the age of nine?
No, I've noticed that. What I haven't noticed is people still being unaware of it when they become adults. I kept saying that, over and over, but somehow everyone's all caught up on me learning it when I was nine. Which, again, was something I just wanted to drop.

So if a friend asks you to go and look after their private island for three months and they'll pay you $500 a day for doing it, it's wise to outsource that job to someone else for $5 an hour?
Replacing $5 an hour with a reasonable wage for 2010, instead of a reasonable wage for 1993?

Yes, if they can do it.

It's not whether someone will do it, but whether they can. Sometimes there's nobody else that can do it, and you have to do it yourself.

Has it never crossed your mind or caught your attention that the world is absolutely full to the brim with people who would risk their lives to put you out if you were on fire
          Kitty Genovese.

Oh, I know, it's not the same thing. It's never the same thing. But since the line in question is a metaphor... why, it isn't the same thing, either.

You want me to be absolutely perfect 100% of the time?

          Tough.

I screw things up. It happens. Deal with it.

And then I admit that I've screwed them up, and I try to fix them.

          Usually, I succeed.

          In this case, I haven't.

If anyone wants a money making idea it is simplicity and big text/graphics/order buttons - especially if your target market is over 40.

If you've ever held the newspaper or a product out at arms length trying to read it you know what I'm talking about.

Making it easy to click/order if your customer is using an iPad.

Pizza Hut. In store and online, the company has its act together. Have you actually tried your ordering process lately?

I forget the name, but there's a cell phone that's cranking it out by essentially being the 'anti-iPhone'. Big-button keypad. Makes and takes calls - that's it. The only 'app' is a live operator who will dial your calls for you if you forget the number - tell her who you want to call, she looks it up on the list you've provided, and makes the connection.

And they do it completely backwards - the service is relatively cheap, but the phone costs a few hundred dollars.

Speaking of Johnny Depp, at what point in our cultural history, did women start becoming attracted to prepubescent looking hairless men?

All of the male models are skinny little guys who have clean shaven chests and legs.

    It's creepy.

Not all men with hair are Rednecks you know.

No doubt. Even Vince Neil from Motley Crue (who Aerosmith wrote the song about) eventually grew out of that phase and started looking like a dude again.

I qualify as big, old and hairy, and I can assure you I have no interest in prepubescent anorexic model types. Of either gender. [Disclaimer: no interest in males of any other type, either.]

My wife has me started watching shows like Project Runway and America's Next Top Model. (I've also gotten a few decent keyword ideas from the shows - there's my monetization angle.)

When I hear some of these scrawny little things whining about blimping up to a size 2, I want to smack them. ANTM is getting the message, though. One of their girls was so skinny, she almost looked like one of those old holocaust photos of people down to skin and bones. She was cut for being too skinny.

Back to monetizing...I watch a lot of those "reality" shows too to get ideas on where the trends are going for that demographic.

You can learn a lot from listening in on the seemingly meaningless discussions those folks have.

Maybe a lot of those Project Runway type designers can't really design something for normal women.

They save money on fabric too.

Dennis is the one who told me who it was because I was lost trying to figure it out. I was like, didn't it use to say his whole name? I know my mind wanders but generally it does come home every night. LOL.

              Thanks for the DAC song...

From the stuff coming out of my car radio, I was beginning to think country music was nothing but happy family guys and skinny teen queens moaning about their boyfriend's truck...

I have a song title, if any of you songwriter types want to take a whack at it...

"When the Wind Comes Off the Stockyards, Darlin', I Still Think of You..."

I even have a possible chorus...

When the wind comes off the stockyards, darlin,
              I still think of you.
I stepped into a steaming pile
Of what you put me through.
              Turns out the worst day
Of my life was the day I said "I do"
When the wind comes off the stockyards, darlin,
              I still think of you.

Being happily married for almost 30 years, I haven't been able to come up with any verses.

David Allen Coe once came up to me when I was playin at a bar called the "dont know lounge", just outside of Nashville, as I did twice per month back in 1996, and he said I sang his song better than anybody he'd seen. Then he invited me over to where he was sitting hence I was directly hit on by a table full of drunk women with really full bleach blond hair, spandex and lots of make up -UGH! Scary. While he sat back and said "See they like you...", and ordered the waitress to bring me a beer.

I thought it was a pretty cool gesture of him.

      This is a true story.

The last time I talked to David Allan Coe he just finished writing You Never Even Called Me By My Name and he pulled aside and said...

...no wait, that wasn't me, that was you. Dad gum it John, can I hang out with you?

    Making money?

You could place a fairly confident bet that right now I'm staring in the mirror practicing my "I'm-cool-just-by-standing-here-looking-composed-yet-indifferent-hey-check-out-my-way-unfair-artistically-rugged-good-looks-like-Johnny-Depp" pose.

How does he DO that? Way not fair to look that cool.

When I do it I look like some kind of constipated robot.

You could bet that I'm also wondering if all those PSA commercials are full of dookey and they're completely missing the boat with morphine.

They've obviously never tried it mixed with Warrior Forum.

    Very useful thread. Thanks.

    JUST KIDDING

    This is an eclectic group.

Funny... inspirational... there is a lot going on here.

Thanks for the laughs. A+ on the Sprint commercial.

And I'd never heard of Tom Vu before but now I'm digging his marketing.

Allen should post more often. It changes the vibe. A lot.

      I second that!

Some of us that have only been around for a few years missed out on the more active Allen that the early members got to enjoy and learn from.

I know we're all trying to have a good time here and I'm all for the joking
around as anybody else, but there is a serious marketing lesson in this
thread if you look for it.

For starters, look at the thread title.

How many members here could start a thread with this title and get the
          views up to 6 pages?

          Not many.

This shows the power of commanding an audience because of who you are.

Allen Says may very well be one of, if not THE most successful marketer
on the Internet. He certainly has the most popular marketing forum in
the world and one that I dare guess makes him millions of dollars each
          year.

Allen Says could pretty much start a thread about amoebas and get 20
          pages of replies.

He earned that kind of respect.

Imagine any one of us accomplishing what he's accomplished in his life
and being able to start a thread LOL...hmm and get this much response.

So, how do you get to this kind of position?

Well, I dare so you probably have to work damn hard at the beginning to
make it there. I can only imagine Allen's early days as a marketer, what
he did, how many hours he put in and how much attention to detail he
          paid to his business.

If you've read any of his stuff in the War Room, you know that this man
has more knowledge in his pinky than most of us have in our whole bodies.

I can only dream of the day when I can start a thread "LOL...hmmm" and
          get this much respect.

Allen...you are a TRUE marketing genius, unlike a lot of the posers online
that we run into day in and day out.

And with that, I return you all to your fun and games.

My money is on 25 pages minimum before this baby falls off of page 1.

Good point... but... it's also his thread, so he gets to let it run as long as he likes

Of course. If Allen wants to yank this thing tomorrow, he will.

But letting it run its course, should he choose to do that, I can almost bet
this baby will run 25 pages.

              That was my point.
