Hello,

I'm doing research for keywords (setting up an Affiliate Product Site) and I can't remember the rules when it comes to the levels of monthly local searches.

It Seems like something around anything over 1,000 and under 11,000.

Am I wrong??

What About competition levels???

is there a ratio I should be looking for???

Thanks.

I'm willing to go well under 1,000, myself, if I think I can easily rank well for a keyword I want.

The number of competing sites has absolutely no relevance at all. All that matters is their quality. You're competing with only 5 of them anyway (i.e. the top 5 on the first page of SERP's). It matters whether you can dislodge one or more - preferably more - of those 5, so you need to study their SEO in as much detail as you can (it isn't always easy).

Whether those 5 happen to be followed by 995 other sites or 9,999,995 other sites makes no difference at all.

It's easier to compete successfully with 10,000,000 sites if you see weakish article directory entries on the first page than it is with 1,000 sites if the ones on the first page are all age-old, high-PR authority sites with a million backlinks each.

I agree, anything over 1000 search volume is good to work with but if I find a keyword with less search results that has seriously low page competition in Google, I'll go with it. I'm happy enough when I see less than 10,000 competing pages.

You can do good with a keyword that has searches as low as 500 exact monthly search volume. it just has to be a real good buying keyword and make sure the search trends are steady

I can't help but chuckle when I read that.

Why do you think there are rules for something like this?

Here's a thread I made that will cover this...I laid out a blueprint for people to use:

    BS.

You can have the most stunning website, with content worth $100,000 ...

If you don't start your link campaigns, I'm afraid you'd be just wasting your time.
The quality of their SEO, not the quality of their site!!!

It's their SEO you're competing with, if you want to occupy one of those top positions on page one.

What's the matter with you today, Al?! :p

It depends on what you want man to be honest. Are you trying to monetize an adsense site that gets little cash per clicks? You want high volume.

If you have a product that sells for 1000$, then you can settle for lower volume, it just depends on how much you want to make, there is no set determination for that. Depends on what's making you money.

These are My Personal Guidelines for One Keyword
High Income Per Action (around 50$ or more) = You can settle for Lower Levels of Traffic (About 16 visitors a day) & Medium Competition (100,000 competing websites)
Medium Income Per Action (10-49$) = Settle for Medium Traffic (30 visitors a day) & Medium Competition

Low Income Per Action (.01-9.99$) = Get very high traffic (65 visitors a day) & Low Competition (60K visitors or lower)

Of course this isn't the say all, end all, it's just something that I use for myself.

If you don't make it into one of the top three spots on the front page then you are looking at getting between 2% - 8% of the monthly totals.

So if you knew you were going to get 5% of the monthly totals, what numbers do you need each month for your profit?

If you are selling a product for a $25 commission and that product's sales page converts at 2% and you are getting 5% of the monthly total traffic for a keyword then how much traffic do you need to make the money you want to make?

Traffic x Conversion Rate x Commission = Profit
