WOW! As someone who has watched the Cowboys fail miserably on the field all season, I'm not completely surprised that the incompetence extends to the web department. Perhaps 'ol Jerry Jones should extend his duties from Owner and GM to include "VP in Charge of Domain Renewal"

I think whoever heads the web development/IT team at the Dallas Cowboys needs to be fired. Surely someone working there would be aware that they could auto-renew domains?! This is totally inexcusable, and they could have landed themselves into a lot of trouble if some nitwit out there had decided to pick up the expired domain name while it was up for grabs.

      I've seen two things happen:

      1) The credit card for the auto-renew expires so it can't be renewed - usually accompanied by an out-dated contact email so they can't be notified!

      2) The renewal notice goes to an accounts payable person. Now, these are hard working people, but the don't necessarily know what a domain name renewal notice is all about and they've been told that scammers will try to steal the domain so they trash it... oops.

It looks to me that scenario 1 is more likely to occur. With something as important as a domain name for a large organization where it's easy for things to get lost in the shuffle of activities, they truly need to have a renewal checklist and well-defined procedures in place so that their domain name doesn't inadvertently slip through the cracks like what happened here.

While it's understandable how things like this can go awry, I think it's inexcusable with an organization of this stature.

I don't think I can post a link since I don't have 15 posts yet (I'm new here), but checkout the free report at NeverLoseADomain.com "The Definitive Guide To Never Losing Your Domain Name" - exactly how to avoid this sort of thing.

WOW. That's crazy. I have a countdown clock on my computer that counts down the time until expiration on my domains which I constantly check.

I don't use auto renewal as I don't want to rely on the registrars system to keep my domain renewed as my credit card could turn out to be expired or something.

I always manually renew them each year 3 months before expiration.
