I don't understand how to arrange things on my host server

Sorry, but I don't really know how to formulate this question. I will try, it's so basic to most of you that you'll think it's a very complex question. I know all of you do this daily.

1. When I upload/FTP my websites, or ebooks that I want purchasers to download, or anything that I want to give people access to. I think they go into Public_html don't they?

2 Do I make a separate folder for each one in the public_html and name it like for example: "ebook2"
and then give the customer a link such as www.mydomainname.com/ebook2

3. can I make as many of these folders as I want to and put them in the public folder?

For some strange reason, all the website building courses, and training that I have found (and I bought some pretty detailed courses) seem to leave out this little area. "How does one manage their various minisites, websites, downloadables, etc on the host server?"

If you could recommend an ebook, or helpful website, I'd be very grateful. If you want to spend a few minutes explaining ,well ,that would be great also.

This has become a big "stopper" for me and I don't need any thing else to stop me.

Thank you very much for not laughing,

    Hi Ron,

I think a lot of what you need to know will depend on how you are setting up your sales process. If it's sales page to payment processor then download page, then you need to decide how and where this will be set up.

The important thing is you want to have your download page named as something unique, your downloads in a folder with a special name and a blank index.html file in the download folder. That keps you folder from being openly exposed on the web.

    Example:

    Sales page - index.html

Thank You page (after sale) thk_dlp.html

downloads in a folder named 9ol8y5H

So you would end up with your flow being sale to download page with links being 9ol8y5H/product.zip

This is a basic set up, but if you are using a sales processing script, you may have the ability to protect your download another way.

Add more here if it's not clear.

    Thanks,

    John

    1. Yes
    2. The download link for a zipped file would be www.mydomainname.com/ebook2/filename.zip
    3. Yes

As John said, you may want to use a file protection system so the file location is hidden. Look at dlguard.com or e-junkie.com

    Hi Ronwag,

    The answers to your questions...

    1. Yep, you are right. They go into public_html. Public_html is so called the main folder where you place ebooks, files, webpages that you want to appear online. But you also need to specify the domain that you are ftp-ing into. If you want to ftp your homepage which is "index.html", you ftp it straight into the domain that you want your homepage to be.

    2. You do not need to create a seperate folder if you don't want to. Let say your ebook2 is in pdf format, so you ftp ebook2.pdf straight into your domain.
When you do this, the link should be www.yourdomain.com/ebook2.pdf. When someone click on the link, they will straight away download the ebook2.

Some people create seperate folders so that they can be more organised. Let say you create a folder called "downloads". And you place ebook2.pdf in the "downloads" folder. So your link will be www.yourdomain.com/downloads/ebook2.pdf

    3. You can place as many folder as you want. Should not be a problem.

    Hope this helps! Take care.

Thanks Mohammed, you shone some more light on the subject, it's getting clearer and clearer. I wonder why this little area isn't talked about much? Where did everybody learn it? I read all the tutorials from hostgator, and googled it, but it was hard to narrow the search, hard to explain my question in a few words.

      Many thanks for your help,

        Ron,

        While you're experimenting .....
Be sure to heed Global Pro's advice on the index.html
which can be left blank or or as I usually do I just make
a plain and simple page that reads:
"Are you lost?" Click here to go to my home page.

YOU NEED AN INDEX PAGE FOR ANY FOLDER ....
or all the contents will be visible to anyone.
(Unless it is a protected page by another means, as John mentioned)

Test a folder without an index page and you will see.
Hope this clears your understanding even more.

Hey thanks Ronwag... I'm putting together training videos for my "Secret Project" and I will definitely include this in those videos.

Sometimes experience can be our weakest point when putting together stuff for the beginners out there.

Thanks very much John and Andrew, I think it's sinking in, slowly. I feel like I have some kind of mental block. Maybe I should just upload something and play around with it. I have frontpage as my html editor. John, do I just create a folder in the download folder and name it index.html I know a little about e-junkie and I'll probably use it. What are all those other files on the host server?

    Hi Ronwag,

I'm sure things are already clear by now but this might help as well.

Consider the public_html/ as your domain.com/
you can create as many folders and subfolders as you like and just relate them to your url

    domain.com/reports/file.pdf
which would be located as such public_html/reports/file.pdf
    or
    domain.com/reports/topicfolder/file.pdf
which would be located as such public_html/reports/topicfolder/file.pdf

So by following the path of where you want something located you'll find that both browser url and folder paths are one in the same.

By simply understanding the path location in relation to any given url you'll be able to organize folders and files to best fit your needs.

    Hi Ron,

What everyone said above is good but you had asked this:

2 Do I make a separate folder for each one in the public_html and name it like for example: "ebook2" and then give the customer a link such as www.mydomainname.com/ebook2

I wanted to mention that usually you ask people to download a FILE (it can be yourebook.zip or yourebook.pdf or yourebook.doc etc. That is called a file (even if it's a zip that contains a number of pages). The file can be reached by them in your public_html folder or you can create within that another folder called /secretrecipe/ and stick in it thereport.pdf so it's www.domain.com/secretrecipe/thereport.pdf

By the way with e-junkie, they host the download page (if you want them to) so you just upload the file to them and it's not on your website anyway.

I have a similar question that I asked in the web design folder but know one has answered yet and I am running out of time. I hope someone here can enlighten me. Here is the question:

I uploaded a website (fatbinderinfo.com) to my server and when I put the domain in my browser my other website (a forum) came up. I then put my website in a folder and named it site9 just to see it if that would work and now I have to put fatbinderinfo.com/site9. I would rather only have to put in fatbinderinfo.com. Can anyone tell me how to do this. Thanks.

Unless I am misunderstanding you, it sounds like you are using an ftp program to upload your files. I sounds like you just didn't upload the correct site.
Whatever you are using to ftp---look at it again ==start it up--look to see if the forum site is listed instead of your new site.

Be sure to connect to both the correct site files and the correct site in the ftp program---not looking sometimes you can upload over another site.

Sounds like you just uploaded your forum site to your new site. If so, you will be able to see your forum on it's regular site and the new site.
Let us know if that is not it and we will send more suggestions.

    Thanks Glenn.
I am using godaddy's ftp. I already uploaded the forum and it is working fine. Then I uploaded another website but when I put in the domain name in the browser I get my forum. I have seven domains and when I put any of them in the brower I get my forum for some reason. I think I am just not understanding how you link a domain name to a website.

I have not used Godaddy Ftp (I use SmartFTP) but in my program,
at the top left, is the ADDRESS (where you are publishing to)-(your site).

I publish to many sites and I have a "dropdown" box to select the
site when I want a particular folder to be published to.
If that address is not changed to a different site (to the one you want), then it will keep publishing to the same site.
(In this case it is your forum)

Re-read your FTP instructions on how to publish and set up your
site (fatbinderinfo.com) in the publishing ADDRESS bar and the password for your site and it should go to (fatbinderinfo.com) instead of to your forum.

Maybe I should use SmartFTP. Godaddy is very confusing on all aspects. It has nothing like you describe in your post. It sure would make it easier. Thanks Careygee, I am off to read the instructions again for maybe like the 5th time.

      Ron,
Ok, now you got me confused. You say you have seven domain names. Do you have 7 different sites? Are they normally up and running? Each site should have it's own cpanel and different ftp's.
If you are still having trouble, I could walk you through it. I would rather talk than type. If you have skype or Aim voice chat, you could contact me and I will try to sort it out.
I will be on for a little while longer--then off to bed. Stayed up all night.

    Hi Rhonda,

Login to your godaddy account and make sure your hosting is set up correctly in order to find your other websites. Godaddy is a bit different than other host providers using addons. Most likely its a pointing issue to find the correct folder associated with each domain.

You might find it faster to just call up godaddy's support since you are in U.S.
They should actually do it for you.

If not and you still need assistance just pm me and I'll see whats up.

Oh, I didn't know you had to have different cpanels and ftp's for each website. I only have two websites the fatbinder one and the forum. The other 5 domains are not associated with anything, I just put them in the browser on a whim and my forum came up. I don't understand how some people can have so many websites and have to have a different ftp for all of them. Thanks Bruce, and you too Glenn, right now I am still reading the tutorials. I will call them up in a bit if I still can't make heads or tails.

If you have only 2 sites but 7 domain names this is what some folks do. Take your forum for example: ThomasCountyForum.com --you have that domain name---then you buy another domain name-lets call it ThomasCountydirectory.com (but not using it yet or it is old domain with traffic) you park it in your cpanel with ThomasCountyForum ---now you can type in either name and it will go to your forum.

For each to have it's own site--a cpanel is needed.

How do we keep up with them?--easiest way is to get reseller hosting account for about $25 month from hostgator or somewhere.
Then you log into your main cpanel---there is another icon which you probably do not see in yours now called WHM-(web host manager) --you can see and access all your domains there if you want.

Thank you all; I learned a lot. Might as well press my luck and ask some more things.

I have a PLR package that has a sales letter, thank you page etc included. A sales kit. It contains many folders, with names like, images, sales letter, download page, index_html. The "image folder has tons of files in iit.

What do I do with these? I sense thaat I can't just upload the folders them selves, or do I just upload them, and when someone clicks on the link to the index page does it just draw out the files it needs automatically? I just don't know what to do.

I throw myself on your good graces once again.

      Thank you,
