Is using awstats accurate?

Hi there,

Is using Awstats from my hosting account to track/monitor my web traffic accurate and reliable.

Or should I rely on Google analytics for better monitoring of traffic stats?
Thanks!

I strictly use AW Stats and have no problem with it. It really breaks down where all of your traffic is coming from, so you can see what traffic is just from bots or crawlers and what is legitimate traffic. It shows you IP addresses used, browsers used, countries your visitors originate in, and keywords used to find your website. I like it. It does a good job of keeping track of your traffic without you having to open up all of your website's doors to Google's scrutiny.

There is nothing to stop you from using both. They both have thier +/-. I really cannot be bothered to go into detail right now.

A Google search for 'AWStats v GA' will give you all the answers that you need to make an informed decision.

Btw, I would not get too paranoid of Google!

AWStats, Webtemp and other server log analytics are for your control panel stats and they collect almost every traffic from bot to human. It is more accurate than analytics.

Google analytics runs on your pages which are in /index_html and it can't access the folders and files which are getting traffic and are not monitored using GA script.

I use both to validate each other... Google analytics get a little more detailed. You can see what days specifically that certain keyword phrases are used and what pages are found to get to your site. Awstats is a little more basic, but still very good.

I use AW Stats, GA and Mint. I love Mint because it shows live traffic and all that kinda cool stuff if your into watching it as it comes in.

AW Stats seems to create a high server load when it runs though. Just something I noticed in the passed.

Yes. Plus reports are saved in separate folder outside /index_html which increases it's folder size more than your typical wordpress db size or other dynamic cms file size. It's definitely a load but gives more accuracy.
