FACEBOOK and TWITTER Basics - how to start...

I've had a website for a while selling products but never tapped into Facebook and Twitter. I know I NEED to do this but how to start - here are some questions - please comment if you are really good at marketing on these social media sites:

FACEBOOK

1. I have a Fb account (under my own name) but have never really used it for anything. I am tentative to create a fan page off of it for my business because I hear people get kicked off Fb all the time - I don't want to lose my personal account as I might actually use it some day.

2. Should I create a Fb account under my business name instead? I know they say not to do this - but people do it all the time, right?

3. Do I get someone to create a fancy business page (fan page) whatever you call it?

4. I'm going to get some outsourcing help - but what do I have them do (pretend like I don't know anything about Fb - I don't!!)

TWITTER

1. Same as above - have a personal account but never used it. People sort of know me, but know my online business better. should I open up an account using my business name instead of mine own name?

2. do I get someone to create a fancy business page?

3. What can I have an outsourcing person do? Please be specific - I don't know anything about Twitter!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you

    1. I don't see any reason why you would get kicked off of Facebook for creating a page for your business.

    2. Multiple accounts is NOT allowed following Facebook's TOS. Take that as you will.

    3. You can. If you have a good business and product and market your Facebook site, people are going to become a fan anyway. If you are looking for fans from people just browsing your page, just post interesting content and links.

    4. Why would you outsource something if you don't know what you want?

    1. You ARE allowed to have multiple Twitter accounts. You can either take 1 of 2 routes. First, you can have one account and become more of a "face" of your company. Or, you could separate your work and personal, it is totally up to you.

    2. I am guessing that backgrounds for Twitter are cheaper than creation for a FB fanpage. I do not know, so I cannot comment on this.

    3. Same answer as above.

Yes, it's possible to change settings on the pages making it not possible to post or comment anything.

I personally know 4 people who have recently been kicked off of Facebook - 2 of them were innocent! I don't want my personal account linked to my business page - but thank you for your insights and comments. I may have to do it this way, but I don't want to.

Like I said - I am looking for the basics of how to set up my account, and how to begin the learning process. Thanks warriors!

I think the old expression of "It's better to beg for forgiveness then ask for permission" really applies to Facebook.

I'm going to be straight up here. IM can be ruthless. You must get out there and take action. If you get a FB page shut down, big deal. Learn from it and make another. (Save the content on you computer).

Just start taking action and worry about problems as they arise. There is no way you can possibly plan for everything in advance.

      My 2 cents...

I have done this with other marketing strategies, but you are right, I will just do it. I was, and still wanting to create a business page though - curious if anyone has gone that route instead of a fan page off of their main personal site.

Brutal honesty is sometimes needed - thanks!

Is it against Fb rules to give away free content to promote your business?

I've had a good deal of success with creating Fan Pages that had high-value content hidden until a user 'liked' the page. The key is to have something that actually is of value, not just some crappy free eBook. if you really provide something good then they will spread the word and before you know it, you'll have gone viral :-)

    Quality is the key.

when it comes to twitter, an outsourced staff can help you follow or unfollow people and update your tweets. answering to replied tweets will also be a good way is also another job they can focus on.

Social Media are going to help you a lot in taking your business to the next level no matter where you are right now.
I would say, Facebook personal pages are more about relationships, but Twitter profile pages are more about business. It would be kind of inappropriate to use a personal Facebook page for promoting your business. On Twitter, you could do that.
You could get a Facebook business page, and promote your business using that.
There are a lot of outsoursing options, but there's not really much to take care of in case of social media if you have a business online. Simple profiles work really great if you put good content in there. People usually come back to your website if they learn something the first time they visit your page. Of course it's important to pay attention to designing your page too. Since people make up their minds in the first 5 seconds whether they want to stay on the page, or close it, based on how appealing your page is to their eyes. I hope this helps. Have a great time. I'd keep my business account and personal account separate if I were you. Not just to keep from getting banned...but you don't want your personal account to become some sort of permanent ad for your business.
