A secret place to find all kinds of marketing answers...

I've noticed this more and more, thought I'd share a well guarded secret that I learned from one of the gurus. Roughly 80-90% of your questions about internet marketing can be answered here with minimal work, see if it works for you :-) (You can also use the search function in this forum)

Just saying... :-p

          Hi,

With some clever packaging and blind sales copy you could sell this as a $97 WSO

You're probably right (sadly enough), but I was tragically born with a conscience. Don't give anyone ideas though, my luck I'd end up buying the WSO ;-)

90% of answers to everything can be found via Google.

But if it were that simple and easy, there would be no need for forums such as this one, with a focused discussion and what basically turns into content aggregation by a group of likeminded people. And clearly there is. Not just for IM but for any special interest.

It's never simple to boil the ocean, which is what saying "Just Google" is.

Just add to what is fast becoming a debate.

It's true Google cannot answer every single question a person may have, but some people are so lazy they don't even try Google as a starting point.

I'm not saying to use it exclusively as a learning tool, I'm saying that most highly specific questions can be answered in less than a second. All of the questions such as 'What are some good press release services, top ___ directories, etc." There's nothing wrong with asking something here, just put in some effort first.

But that would require initiative, and self-reliance, and reading, and thinking. All the hard stuff that is required to build a successful business (what a coincidence). It's so much easier to come here and demand to be spoon-fed the answers. Isn't that what the WF is for?

        That's an easy one...

I think I understand why you made this post.

Quite often, we see a lot of people coming in here asking questions that have been answered many times over in very many ways. Some of these questions seem really simple and basic to a lot of us who have been around a while.

However, simply giving a beginner a link to Google and telling them that 90% of what they need can be found there isn't always very helpful.

Google, like the rest of the web, is full of a lot of bad information. It's got a great algorithm, but it's not perfect, and there is still plenty of misinformation in the SERPs about certain topics. There is also some out-dated content still ranking at the top of the SERPs.

In order for Google to be a useful resource, the person searching has got to be able to filter out good and bad information. They need to apply some critical thinking and due diligence. If you are totally new to IM, thats going to be difficult to do.

I agree with you, a lot of people can find most of the answers to their questions using Google, but weirdly, in order to do that effectively, they have to know a bit about what they are doing and what they are searching for!

To use an extreme example, it would be like telling some one they could find all the answers to their legal issues online. They probably could, but the chances are they wouldn't be able to navigate their way round all that information, which is why there is a need for lawyers and other legal experts.

I am being a little pedantic! But I agree, it would be great if some beginners and members became more familiar with the search tools that the Internet has provided us with!

Exactly. Without the "time in the trenches" for someone to build up their necessary "BS filter" they can come across plenty of mis-information that can have them running in circles for days or weeks (if not longer).

        Interesting thread, but inaccurate responses.

First, Google lists many search results by the ranking of the site index, not by the most current and relevant information.

If a site is considered an authority site, and has information that contains the keywords that are being searched, it will rank higher on the search page results than more relevant and current information from a site that is newer or not ranked as high within Google.

This is why many top spots on the first page are information that is sometimes over 3 years old, and more current information and content is sometimes only found on page 2 or 3.

No. Google is not the wise, tobacco chewing, cowboy of the plains, the Indian Shaman, or the Guru of answers. Google is only a script. A device. A very large and complex directory of information. Google is not human, and is not human edited or surveyed. It is a script, and is not as great as so many seem to believe or wish.

This is why it can be easy to fool Google into thinking that your site is great and contains the answers to the questions and searches that people are looking for, when in fact there may be another site that is better and much less expensive, but has no or little experience in SEO strategies.

Many people continue to teach the same old incorrect banter, and perpetuate the same old misinformation about Google searches.

One that really gets me is the amount of related sites and answers that show up when you type in a search into Google.

Most searches reveal hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions of results. This is far from the truth. If you take the time to click on the pages and go to the end you will discover Google's secret. It only goes to 1,000 page results. There are no results beyond 1,000, and think about it, if there were how relevant would they be? Not much or not at all.

So, when Google gives you a result of 143,000 search results it is a complete lie and farce. If you do not believe me check it for yourself, click to the end of your keyword search.

I get a kick out of reading "Guru's" that keep perpetuating this myth and misinformation. It reveals to me who is really taking the time to investigate and who is just regurgitating information that is false and unsubstantiated.

There may be 143,000 people searching for a particular term or phrase, but there are not 143,000 people and sites competing for the term or phrase. This is why it can be easy to rank high for a term or phrase that has so many results, not because you have a new or original twist. It is because the Google results are not accurate and are not really representative of reality.

Chew on this for awhile, smoke it in your peace pipe, and say Amen to your current Guru.

Yes you'll get answers at Google, but will they be correct? Anyone can say anything in a blog, and there is money to be made by spinning a yarn.

E.g. Those review sites where the "winning" products are the ones getting the most commission to the affiliate, not necessarily the best products.
