Can you change the width of your columns on wordpress?

When you upload a wp template and you start adding content you have a posts side and then you have your sidebar.

Is it possible to increase the width of the sidebar area on a 2 column layout so the post and side bar area have an even width? Basically right down the middle of the page. Half and half.

It really depends on the theme your using or your ability to hack the theme.

Ya, depends on the theme. Some themes allow you to do it via the theme interface, while for others you might need to hack the css.

Yes anything is possible in wordpress you just need to know where to find the code and know what to add and change in it. Any theme can be modified.

If you don't know a lot of CSS, I would recommend Artisteer to help you with the wordpress themes. I've used it before and found it very helpful while I was learning CSS.

I've had success editing column widths under the theme editor. You usually have to go under the "stylesheet" file. You can do it on the WP dashboard on your site or you can download it and work on it locally with Dreamweaver or a simple text file.

      One caution, though...

If you change the column width, look at the width of the elements within that column to see if you will break your layout. An element sized at 500 pixels wide stuffed into a 450 pixel column will not be pretty...

Have a play with Web Developer for Firefox, that way you can adjust the CSS live in the browser and run a quick test.

Or the other option is to make a copy of your worpress themes main CSS file, make adjustments to the original, then if things go pear shaped you can just copy the contents of the copied CSS file back into the original.

It will depend on the flexibility of the particular theme you are using. Best wishes to you.

It would be very difficult that your theme supports half/half column. Not many themes have flexibility to do that, so you would have to play with CSS. I wouldn't recommend you to try to do it yourself, I would post a job in oDesk or similar.

Other alternative of course would be to use another more flexible theme, it depends in your situation...
