I never really bothered to investigate how Alexa works but I suspect they get their figures from viewers that have some sort of Alexa toolbar installed

I've never bothered much about Alexa to be honest... use your own visitor tracking tools and get a true reflection of who is visiting your sites.

As many of you have iterated before me..Alexa Ranking is pretty crude and not at all a fair representation of the traffic to non-webmaster blogs and websites.
If you get massive traffic it is highly probable that a good share of those visitors will have the Alexa toolbar installed, and thus reflect your traffic arguably well enough. If however you have moderate volumes of traffic to your site/blog, no need to be disappointed with your Alexa rank. There are pretty easy ways to improve it if you care to.
1.Use the toolbar and ask your visitors to do so, either directly or by writing posts about it to encourage them to try it out.
2.Join and participate actively in a forum/community which has many webmasters so that a fair share of your traffic will have the toolbar installed.
3.Write stuff that will get you webmasters as visitors.

I'm sure there are many other ways to improve your Alexa rank, but these are the ones I follow.
