Facebook 'edgerank' algorithm

Hi,

Just read something interesting, and thought I would share it here.

Seems Facebook is (or has been) implementing a similar style "pagerank" algorithms to items that appear in people's newsfeeds, etc -- called "EdgeRank". Essentially - it looks at how often a user looks at a page, how often they post to it, and how recent those comments were posted (time decay) to determine how 'effective' they were/are.

I suppose it makes sense now why some of those surveys (i.e., 'See which movie star YOU are most like!') do well. It's engaging, gets people to comment, etc, etc.

In a nutshell -- I suppose it reiterates what some have known all along -- it means make your page interactive and interesting. If you just try and have a salespage type fan page, updates will quicly drop and then apparenltly/actually won't show up in users newsfeeds.

I have been saying this for a while but Facebook (with or without bing) has the potential to take over search.

I would rather use a recommendation engine vs a search engine.

The top results are voted by your friends not based on who builds links better.

Yes, basically it looks like it is becoming harder for (an individual) to fool the search engines, etc. However, with the right software tools, etc, it will just simply be a bit of an arms race.
