For example, Let's say I wanted to use LA Lakers or New York Yankees images.

Good luck with that. You're not going to find much that doesn't have a price attached.

I'm pretty sure if you took your own camera and took a picture yourself and used that picture for commercial purposes you'd still run the chance of getting hit for trademark infringement.

Your usage will determine the results.

A How To Shoot Better ebook with a pic of Kobe on the cover is going to last as long as it takes the Lakers and NBA to find your site.

Those types of images I would imagine all come with some type of fee. I don't think you are going to find many that are free for commercial purposes when you are using team specific photos/images.

Here's a couple of sites I found images on when I search new york yankees but as I say, you will have to pay for those images:

Thanks, I will check these out later today, after some last minute xmas shopping of course. I realize that that I will have to pay for images, the project calls for a custom wordpress theme design, so I will make sure to pass on costs to my client...

I'm in the sports industry, and I can really say there are no good sources that you'd be able to depend on for decent quality images. I'd recommend looking into licensing some... it'll be a chunk of change, but it will guarantee your use of great images.

Yeah, I really want to avoid having to pay a lot of for these images. Like I said, I am using them to develop a custom Wordpress theme for a client. Here is an example of the type of images I am looking for: Zell's Pinstripe Blog

I found a few that I think will be okay to use, but I am going to keep looking for the best.

You are incorrect, if you know people then you can get great images. I all of my sports images are at least 2000x3000 at 300 dpi.

I use these sites all the time:

dreamstime.com they have a purely free section

you can also get great images and only pay a little.

My 2nd fave place is istockphoto.com

It's credit based though.

The last place I look is Bing but you have to check to see if you can use the photo. Sometimes all you need is link back to the artists, which for me is no problem. I don't mind giving the credit.
