I need a new web host!!

I've put this off for years but am at the point where i really need to clean up my domains...

I currently have a shared hosting account (no lectures please with Hostgator with a ton o' addon domains. All domains share the same cpanel ...which is a hassle for accommodating outsourcers every time they need access to a specific domain. Thus, my need for getting a reseller account.

Problem is, Hostgator is going to charge me a $150 flat fee (vs $75/hour) for transferring my addon domains, despite my being with them for 5 years. I happen to think this is kinda cheap so am looking for a different service provider.

Who can recommend an affordable reseller host with 99.99999% uptime, excellent support, cpanel, and all the bells & whistles that a premium host should offer??

thanks in advance for your suggestions

- Vicky

I use NextGenerationHosting.net because they have a really clean back end, and the features are pretty much unlimited.

    Hi Vicky,

I have a VPS with LiquidWeb (so I can set up as many different domains as I want) and couldn't speak highly enough of them.

I've been with LiquidWeb for almost 2 years now and was with HostGator for a few years before. LiquidWeb has AAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++ customer support, cPanel, almost perfect uptime (I've never noticed any down time) and I reckon their servers are actually quicker than HostGators.

...put it this way , I've noticed my sites load up quicker with LiquidWeb than they did with HostGator.

    Cheers

I use Amerinoc.com and they have had 100% uptime (except for one day) in the last 5-6 years I've been with them. They also respond to tickets within 10-15 minutes no matter what time of day it is. That's what I like about it. 14 hour email support. I wouldn't ever switch anywhere else.

Well, I have worked with a BlueHost and I think Godaddy in the past. Currently, I am using HostGator. BlueHost was ok, godaddy was miserable and HostGator is perfect.

If I were you (and I say from my own experience) I wouldn't move away from hostgator and pay the $175. Or else, I would say BlueHost as my second option.

You say you have a "ton" of add-on domains...

Not sure if that really means 2,000 (1 ton = 2,000 lbs) but perhaps it will truly take a long time to do.

If it's a ton as you say, and you're asking for $75/hr vs $150 flat - it would seem that a ton would take 2 hours work pretty easily, no?

Perhaps you could get a warrior to do it for you cheaper?

Moving to a new host will incur the same move costs - all the domains will need to be setup there too.

I use Dreamhost, it is $10 a month or so for unlimited storage & bandwidth. One of my sites has 40 gigs of content and I haven't had any problems at all.

  • hmm... I've only head of two of these hosts before (good to know about the competition)

When i first started accumulating domains, I was of the understanding that the ONLY way to add them to my account was to create addon domains, which is why i carried on the way i did.

At the risk of sounding cheap, I just find it extremely annoying that I have to pay to move my business around with in the same company...

    new/additional question...

Is it possible to manage multiple domains on a shared hosting account and get individual cpanel access?

I don't think so, once they have cpanel access they have access on all the domains, but for $10 I am going to stay cheap and only I and an admin or two have cpanel access.

You can give them ftp access to only their domain(s) with unique usernames and passwords you make up.

I find HG to have great CS, have you called them to see if there is a way to get done what you need? They have always been more than reasonable to take the time to answer all my questions over the years.

You can have each site with it's own cpanel account if you buy reseller hosting.

I've been had my sites with EZPZ Hosting for quite a while now, their reseller hosting is affordable, and their support is excellent. When I signed up with them, they moved all my sites to their hosting at no charge. Mind you, I didn't have a ton :-) Their may be a limit to how many they move for free, but it may still work out cheaper.

  • ...guess i should downgrade my "ton" of websites to about a dozen (keep auctioning them off to focus on personal projects).

glad i asked this Q... there are a few good options here. Hostgator has definitely improved over the years but i like to think loyalty is a 2-way street and the extra charge for moving sites that are already there is a button-pusher...

thx again folks for the suggestions

Hostgator will move them for free but only if you keep the single cpanel which defeats your purpose. I'm contemplating a move to a Hostgator reseller account too but for different purposes. I want secure admin access to each of my WordPress blogs. Since I only have a handful, if I move them myself I'll get separate cpanels.

I switched from hostgator to quality host online in April and have not looked back. The customer service is superb and the up time is MUCH better than what I got at Hostgator, so I am very pleased with the switch. $24.95 per month for a reseller account.

I'd just pay the $150 and move on with creating income. For something that important, I'd rather pay someone to do it right the first time, than to spend hours lamenting over it and having to try to figure out how to fix everything.

IMHO, even if you knew how to do it yourself, do you realize how much time that would take you? Tony is right, pay someone to make the switch and get on with the business at hand.

This has more to do with understanding the process of MOVING your domains. No one is going to do it for free and thing about HG, look at it like this... if you leased a 2nd story Condominium for seven years and decided to move to the 22nd floor, would you expect the HOA to move you for free just because you've been a loyal customer?

The bottom line is; you are going to have pay either way it goes unless you learn how to do it yourself. Others have suggested to just go ahead and pay HG; that is pretty sound advice.

I have been with them a while, they are great (HG is hosted at the planet a #1 uptime winner)

I've got 60+ domains there for $10 a month, with unlimited domains, storage and bandwidth. I am not sure I could do better. Not a reseller account. I don't give clients root access to the webserver, if they want to change their site after I do it they get ftp access to their domain and can upload the new site. If they want to sign up for their own HG acct I have a HG banner on my links page on my personal site.

I am confused though as to what needs to be done with the add on domains that cost that money. How many domains do you have? thousands?

It matters not to me that all my domains have the same IP and one Cpanel..

They are charging $150 to transfer the addon domains to a reseller acct at HG?

        1) creating ftp accounts isn't a biggie, although providing access to a db involves a couple of xtra steps that's a little time-consuming (but not bad)

        2) I really have no idea what level of difficulty is involved in moving domains/files. Wouldn't seem to warrant $75/hour though but hey, what do I know??

        3) I've always been wary of shared IPs -- don't need to have my sites sandboxed because of the stupidity of someone abusing the same IP addy that my sites are on. Also, as far as backlinks are concerned, I definitely don't want to be stuck with shared C-class IPs.

        4) $150 is the special flat rate they offered instead of the $75/hour. (thx to my 5-year tenure . Apparently, moving a dozen sites will take roughly 4-5 hours... ???

I am not sure still about this moving thing, they are moving your domains/files from where to where? moving a dozen sites doesn't take 4-5 hours (unless you have to drive them from DC to NY or something ) There is no problem with shared Ip's. and there is also no problem with your own IP even if you have only one, you can still have thousands of domains on the same IP without trouble with google or backlinks or anything. using shared IP's is of no consequence. Unless of course your webhost sucks and you have a website hosted on the same IP as yours that is constantly under attack or something.

Hahahah! I have sympathy for you! So much so that I broke out the violins...

Just so you know, there are a myriad of good, reliable and trustworthy hosting companies out there and HG is one of the many.

I employ webs hosting companies based on usage. My high traffic MONEY Sites and high resource websites go on dedicated servers. my BL network sites go on cheap hosting, Class C IP hosting and free hosting accounts. My up and coming money makers are hosted on sites like HG, Bluehost and FatCow.

The hosting account you choose all depends upon your needs.

But in terms of moving your domains, you essentially have two choices; DIY or... .

First of all, the $150 charge is cheap money. Moving a number of add-on domain accounts is work.

There are literally thousands of hosting companies, from kids in their parents basements to Wal-Mart size companies like GoDaddy that serve shared accounts. The problem is always the same, too many customers occupying the same server, let alone figuring out who has the right support and reliability.

My advice is to bite the bullet and move to a managed VPS account. That is if you're serious about marketing. HostGator has these too. Yes they cost more, but many of your headaches will soon be over. With a VPS each domain will have its own space, private IP and Cpanel, easier to manage and your protected from encroachment by others occupying the same server resources. It is the next best thing, and at cheaper dollars, to having your own server.

Also, if you end up not liking the provider your with on a VPS, you can transfer all your accounts and sites yourself next time automatically through Cpanel to your future choice.

I have about 8 domains hosted on BlueHost.com. I really like their backend and I have found it easier to use than other webhosts I've had in the past. I haven't used HostGator so I can't compare it, but BlueHost might be worth a look.

The services are second-to-none and I have had nothing but high pleasure when dealing with the customer support. The reliability is extremely amazing as I have had no issues with any of the domains, mail hosting, or web-hosting which I have purchased from the company.
