2010: The Year Internet Marketing Died

Don't know what we'll do in 2011. It's clear that this past year has been the year that Internet marketing died.

Just look through the forum here...
Opt-in forms are dead...

Article marketing is dead...

eMail lists are dead...

Social networking is dead...

Affiliate marketing is dead...

Banner ads are dead...

Blogging is dead...

Clickbank is dead...

AdSense is dead...

Everything is dead, dead, dead.
Internet marketing is apparently pushing daisies.
Deader than a doornail.

Kaput.

No more.

Once but no longer.

At room temperature.

Living-challenged.

Danced the last dance.

Examining carrots from the root end.

Left the building.

Taking up residence in a pine condo.
So, what shall we do in 2011?

Evidently, no one is buying stuff online anymore, nor buying ads.

But, actually they are.

You just can't believe everything you read. (Of course, part of that is that people don't actually read everything they respond to. Just you watch how many people will leave comments on this post arguing that Internet marketing isn't dead when I have essentially just pointed that out.)

People continue to have needs and wants. With the economy down, the emphasis is more on needs than on wants, but people are still spending money.

The thing is that they are spending money more cautiously.

They aren't as easy to part with $7 as they may have been a couple years, or even a couple months, ago.

So, the sellers with problems may be those with poor quality products--or those who have failed to convey the quality of their product accurately and appear as though they are offering junk.

Call me crazy, but I think 2011 may well be the year of quality and value, where the biggest beneficiaries aren't going to be the sellers with the cheapest wares, but those with the highest quality products with a value at least equal to, if not in excess of, its selling price.

      Dan,

I just want you to know that the death was the result of all the drugs...steroids, crack...you name it and IM was on it.

      Tina

PS. Seriously, if I wasn't out of thanks for now, I would have thanked this post as I agree that 2011 will bring new levels of value to the market.

How about you stop worrying about how landing pages are dead and start focusing on providing value?

8 million people lost their jobs in the USA last year alone. A big chunk of these people are looking online to make money. How is this market dead?

Yes it might be very competitive to get emails and sales, but if you provide value you'll get optins and sales galore!

I understand your point of view, Dan. You are right. Newbies are not as ignorant as they used to be in the past because now everyone knows how the internet works. A few years ago it was something new; only a few people knew internet marketing well enough. Today even a kid is able to create an ebook and teach you how to make money online.

This is why nobody is clicking on anything, or trusting anyone.

I think the death came with PLR. This created an avalanche of recycled crap.

The uniqueness of it all went out the window...

I think that movies, music, and internet marketing has died only in the sense that, what people want are original concepts, that people create not for the money, but to give to the world.

Music in the past was the best, because people put their hearts into it...

Internet Marketing use to be good when people cared.

The best thing that happened to IM is Warrior Forum. This leveled the playing field. This forum keeps people who don't care away.

The future is going all customer service and with social media if you sell crap everyone and their momma's will know.

Clever of you to hide that in the longest paragraph of your post, knowing that's the one that many will skip over. (Not to mention putting it in parentheses. Everyone knows the stuff in parentheses isn't important).

Great post, Dan. After all, what is the point of buying the absolute cheapest product if you don't derive any value from it? If you price your product reasonably (notice I said reasonably and not cheaply) and deliver outrageous value at your asking price, you'll always find hungry and satisfied buyers. Period.

Product creators are going to find out sooner or later that 'value' is not synonymous with 'cheapest'.

Great post. I've been wondering about this lately, and even have a friend who just threw in the towel with IMing and said it was a waste of three years of her life. Told me that she's worried there is no future in making money online. Even heard my latest plan and said, "Well, I don't know if you can make money with that. But good luck." Gee. Thanks.

I don't think my website exactly falls into IMing, but I'm determined to make it work.

What went through my mind was the exact point you made. If you have a poor product, poor plans to sell it, and poor confidence, you are going to crash and burn in this economy. Unfortunately she was a victim of too much hype and not enough good planning.

With that said, I think I'll go craft some more content for my site.

Liking this post a lot. The more I get things rolling and get into this business, the more I see that providing solid value is the way to go. It might take a bit longer, it might not yield immediate results, but it is the ONLY way to go for longevity and consistency. Simply put, people don't want crap, trickery, or scams and unfortunately the internet is chock full of all three.

Exactly, you don't want to be the 'one hit wonder' who is later discovered to be using unethical, devious and unsavory tactics to get those quick sales. Initially, it may bring you a lot of cash quickly, but it's going to be hard to sustain that when your reputation takes a hit afterwards. It's not a sustainable long-term business model if you desire repeat business from your customers.

Too true, a much better tactic is to get people to keep coming back. This thread is hilarious by the way. I'm amazed that so many have fallen into the trap.

I think this thread proves two very valid points:

            1) People unfortunately have "knee-jerk" type responses to negative news (and pay far more attention to anything negative in nature).

            2) People have a tendency to skim carelessly through what they read, especially if it is longer than a paragraph or two!

In regards to point number one, I don't know what a "beef-jerky" response is, or negative stew for that matter, but you can see nature all around without paying for it.

As for point number two, it's hard to believe people actually skin carelessly what they read. How do you skin what you read anyway? That doesn't even make sense.

Dennis, you must be in a hungry mood, and you're putting me in one too, because pretty much all your references are to some type of food, and you're starting to make me crave beef stew late in the night!

I was just feeling corny. Oops...there's another food again. Beef jerky and negative stew were the first things I could quickly think of that were close to what you really said. I was kind of hoping someone would think I was guilty of skimming without comprehending because of my intentional mistakes, but that could still happen.

Anyway, enjoy that beef stew. I like a peanut butter sandwich with mine.

I've never known anyone to enjoy beef stew with a peanut butter sandwich..lol! My stomach is rumbling though, and there is no beef stew anywhere to be found, so I may take your suggestion and just fix a peanut butter sandwich instead.

                Wait, what?

Ah, "Reading what isn't there", I get it!
                Also, an example of negative-self-reference?

Reminds me of the applicable aphorism
"Never use the words 'always' or 'never', for there will always be an exception."

In any event, I like the OP's post... not just because it requires a certain amount of attention to both reading and comprehension, but also that it contains a paradoxical statement "IM is dead" combined with "long live IM" - both of which are true... reminds me of something a zen master might say!

In fact, it has inspired me, to begin something I have been thinking about for quite some time...

The truth is that there has never been a better time to be an internet marketer.

More people are online, more prospects are available through cell phones, young people buy everything either through the net or their cell phone.

The technical aspects of marketing are getting easier every single day. It's almost impossible to keep up with all the changes and improvements.

Internet Marketing is the hybrid child of the industrial revolution and the wild, wild west and the gold rush.

Anyone with half a brain and the willingness to work can make a relative fortune.

I remember 20 years ago when a PC salesman sat back in the tech shop with me on New Years Eve almost in tears. He had just had a rough fourth quarter and he told me with a completely serious face that EVERYONE WHO NEEDED A PC AND COULD AFFORD ONE OWNED THEM ALREADY. The market was dead. Next year was going to be a disaster.

I think he forgot to tell Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Steven Jobs...

I heard rumors of all the deaths associated with IM - but I never believe it unless I see a body...so I skipped the funerals.

Imagine my delight when I went to a party and found all those IM methods alive and kicking (and drunk) there. SEO, Adsense and article marketing, in particular, had a good laugh at the hysteria over their "demise". It was a good time.

2011 is shaping up to be the year of cluelessness and a search for easy buttons. If you are in the easy button, fast money, no effort, cash because you need it, industry - 2011 promises to be a banner year.

The "death of reality" as we know it? Oh boy, another wake!

I read, in the November Inc. Issue, that we are in a Demand economy now, which means people are saving more and no longer just spending, to the point where consumer credit is now in the negative for the first time since the 60's.
People are still spending, but like mentioned above, only on products with value. Those days of people buying just because the item is cheep, (and one day they might, maybe need it), no longer applies.

I can remember buying so many things I didn't need, just because It seemed like a good deal...but because of the economy scare, I've had to adapt my spending like most of the world has.

In the last three years, there have been a reported $109 Billion dollars in spending stripped from the U.S economy...people are saving for needs, not spending on wants.

So the moral of the story is, in order to survive, target the needs, not the wants!
Understand who your customers are, and what they want, need and are willing to pay for....and then supply it!

2011 is going to be an awesome year!

Till then people are alive, selling can never be dead.
It is human nature to buy things. Not just they need but as those they just like also.
    So bring value in 2011.
And if Email Marketing, article marketing etc is dead.
Then we will have to find new ways of marketing.
More and more people are coming to internet and finding new ways to monetize it.
Internet Marketing can be dead. But not in 2011.

Sorry, but that's absolutely not true.

People buy what they WANT, not what they NEED. It doesn't matter how rich or poor they are, or what the economy is doing.

For example, right smack bang in the middle of this "recession" that the news wants you to feel, guess what happened?

A popular gaming franchise launched a new title called "Black Ops" across all gaming platforms. That title grossed the biggest amount of sales of any entertainment title in history... selling 5.6million copies and grossing $360,000,000 in revenue (so far.)

Trust me, people spend when they WANT to.

If a comic book fan drives to work one day, and his windscreen cracks, he knows that he has to fix it. So he gets a quote for $20 to replace the windscreen.

But when he arrives home, he finds a postcard slipped through his door, offering his favourite collection of vintage collector's comics, at a discount, for $30.

He only has $40 left in his account. He'll spend that $30 on the comics... leaving $10 for basic food rations... trust me.

The windscreen can - and will - wait.

Bottom line? People buy wants, not needs. Whoever told you otherwise is feeding you bull****, and I advise you to proceed cautiously next year if you're taking regular advice from them.

I hope that internet marketing is "dead"... should get rid of the pretenders who give internet marketers a bad name.

All I can say in my short time in this field is that CONTENT IS KING (I thank SBI and Ken Evoy for that one)

    Happy New Year!

Yes, all the kiddie Internet Marketers will quit and go play Black Ops one their Xbox Live.

That should leave a much smaller group of professional Internet Marketers to scoop up those additional revenues that others have given up on finding.

Don't they have anything like SimCorporation anymore? That would be awesome.

    Internet Marketing Is Dead!

But I have heard that there's a way to make a dead lion to be more dangerous than a living one
    .

Please we need to research on it. If it's true, we can join hands together and see if we can make something out of this whole bunch of dead stuffs.

At least, for the sake of this forum that has stopped us from passing away with internet marketing.
