Hey there warriors.

I was thinking of creating an authority site on computers and stuff like computer maintenance, software/hardware etc2. I know the competition is tough and most probably I would only rank for the long tail keywords in certain blog posts. Do you think this is a good idea? Any experts or anyone that has already done this niche feel free to respond. Anyone please do so and leave your honest opinions.

Thanks.

Kevin

I haven't personally done any work in this niche, but any time you deal with a highly saturated category you have to realize that it will take a lot to rank and do well with it.

One good thing about this niche is that a lot of times you will be dealing with high ticket items (laptops, software, peripherals, etc.), which if you can take control of some long tail keywords, then you could potentially do quite well.

As with any niche, how well you do with it depends on how hard you want to work.

    Good luck.

I would suggest getting much more specific. You'll be able to gain rank and recognition much faster if you specialize.
stuff like computer maintenance, software/hardware etc2.
isn't nearly specific enough. Now if you were going to recommend great ftp programs for MAC systems that might be detailed enough.
Another idea- Are you familiar with the Google Chrome netbooks that Google is giving away to select people? If you could get your hands on one of those and build a site around it (pros's, con's, tweaks, etc.) that may work.
That's how I'd approach it anyway. Kinda like cars, you wouldn't start a site around changing oil and filters on all cars in the world. But you could have a site where you're an expert on the best oil and filters for a Toyota Tacoma.

Choose a tiny corner of the market you can be a true expert in, and then attack it. Do not try to be the "computer expert".

Secondly, while you want to work on SEO, focus more on creating a small following of avid readers. Become the guy who knows everything which is happening with Acer Netbooks. Their problems, their fixes, the rumors of what is coming up, the faulty motherboard in that one pesky model, the way to convince Acer to send you recovery software....(Note: Those are made up scenarios.)

If you niche down and get the right crowd of followers you have a chance. If you want to be Mr. Generic Everything Computers, you have a big challenge ahead of you, but don't let that stop you if it is what you want.

The smaller the subsection, especially if they are always asking questions, the more opportunity you have.

Become extremely well known in Yahoo Answers, Computer support sections of large forums, and other places people throw out their questions. The more quality answers you provide the more people will be interested in listening to what you say.

Consider starting a podcast, a Blog Talk Radio show, or some other method of using added media to separate yourself from the crowd. You could interview other "authorities" and start creating a larger following when they recommend their readers catch the interview.

If you choose a hardware niche, especially from a specific company, contact their marketing department and the head of their customer support division. Tell them who you are, what you are doing, and ask how you can help them get out the word about new products, problem fixes, and product suggestions.

Hopefully that gets your mind churning a little bit, but please wait and see what other people recommend, too.

I think I get what you mean. Like creating a site that you have experience on. That would be very good, and better than just creating general posts that you don't even know what you are talking about! Thanks for that tip.

Scaling down the niche is not bad idea. Instead, it is a brilliant idea! Yeah, I can't be that computer expert. Because I'm not in every field. But I do have some experts in some smaller niches. Maybe I got to wait and scan through what I really can write about. Frankly speaking, I'm only 16 (I know age doesn't matter) so I still have less experience and I really can't write about things like weight loss etc2 (just an example).

Recently, I build a blog, it was related to teenager problems, and teenager lives, I could really write well there! Now I'm getting like 50 visitors a day which I think is okay. (Considering the fact that I am not updating it regularly.) Actually I wanted to continue writing for that blog, but the low CPC was really killing me. I got like $0.06 per click, sometimes a lil higher, but never exceeded more than $0.10 per click. I'm don't know how to monetize this. If anyone can also point something out in this case, please do so.

      Thanks.
