Which is best? Blog on my site vs blog hosted elsewhere

I think this is a choice but I'd like your ideas/opinions:

A blog on my site gives me the new material that google loves and so hopefully builds more authority for the site...an on page tactic if you like

but

Having the blog elsewhere will give me links pointing to my site...an off page strategy

Thoughts?

My vote is for a blog on your own site. I think the benefit of having your blog increasing the reputation of your site outweighs the loss of backlinks, which you can get elsewhere.

      Why don't you do both?

Post the new material on your own blog and then write a post linking back ot it on one of the free blog hosting services.

Make the one that is on your site the longer post and the one that is on the free site a bit shorter and more like a teaser pointing back to your original post on your own site.

Even better then, make the title of the post on your blog a keyword rich title, make sure your permalinks are set to show postname. Install AllInOne SEO and use all its features and then link back to the post on your own blog with a nice keyword anchor text link from teh psot on your free blog. Blogger works great for doing this.

I'd have to agree a blog on your site would be the way to go.

It will make your site more active and you'll get links in google.

You can easily get backlinks other ways.

My vote also to blog on your own site. I think building your reputation is more important than building backlinks for your site. Moreover, people love to know from whom they're receiving their knowledge and is it a trustworthy source or not.. I'm not saying backlinks are not important but you can get them anywhere else like via article marketing or even via forum marketing. So, hope you'll consider of having your blog on your own site rather than hosting it somewhere else.
