Hope someone can help with this

if i type the name of my site with a www. prefix it is truncated to the site name without the www - i think its been redirected

I presume that google sees the two versions as seperate so therfore i have to concentrate my seo on the non www version

Or am i been thick

If you type in the www and it bounces you to the "non" www, then yes, it's being redirected.

That's a good thing though as long as it's done correctly.

Google sees www and non-www as two different entries and since in this case they have the same content on them, will penalize you a little bit for that.

It does NOT make a huge difference in my experience, but best to set it up when you start and focus your attention on one or the other... just don't backlink with www in the url.

Your server is doing that, yout control panel may offer the option to:
    force www
    remove www
    leave www as is

Also can be hand coded in? .htttaccess

I've herd elsewhere that you should maintain a consistent form.
