Can't Log Into Wordpress, Help??

Hello,

I went to log into wordpress to update a few things and it won't let me log in, just says that my password is incorrect!

I've followed the lost password thing to see whether I can retreive the password (even tho I know what I was entering was correct) but now I haven't had an email through..

Anyone had similar problems before?

If you go into your website's cpanel and then into phpMyAdmin you should be able to access your WordPress database from there. You can edit your login details in the wp_users table (click 'MD5' in the drop-down list before saving password changes). I'd make sure there are no users or e-mail addresses in there that aren't yours either.

okay I've found the information and It has all my domains listed, and on the registered email it says admin @domainname.com like it should do for all my others but then the one that I can't log into it doesn't say admin @domain name.com it just has a random email, what do I do to change this? (sorry for the questions I'm not that tech'd up on this)

I'm not sure I entirely understood that, but you seem to be looking at your domain registration info. You need to be looking at your hosting info.

I'v found the info you were on about cos I had the wp-users up etc... and then I found the MD5 that you are on about, there's a random email registered as the admin for my site that isn't mine! - So I'm guessing if I change the email address and password and use the MD5 on the drop down like you said this should be okay?

    Thanks for all the help

I hate to say it, but if it were me I'd delete the site at this point and restore from a clean back-up (I hope you've made a back-up). If someone has hacked in and changed access details there could be anything on there now.

I've sorted it :-) Thanks for the help Diana your a life saver!

I've made my password really complicated now, are there any other security things you would recommend or is it best to just check the database area now and then to check there's no random users?

True, I'll take a look, I've got a feeling that a competitor may have hacked it because it's a review site of mine...I could log in last night, it's only since this morning so hopefully there's not much up with it, but as you say you just never know!

How would they have got access to the site in the first place? - Because it's not like my password was something stupid like "pass" lol

The most common way is probably by taking advantage of known exploits in various versions of WordPress, which is why you should always have the latest version. You should also remove any reference to the version you're running from your source code. Opening your theme's functions file (functions.php) and adding the following to it should do the job. Don't forget to back up first.

    Code:
    remove_action('wp_head', 'wp_generator');

a couple of questions about wordpress updates...

I want to update to the latest version so... do I only need to backup my files encase I want to restore it to the previous version of wordpress?

To actually update can I simply click the "update automatically" button from inside my wordpress admin area then it should be all done?

    Thanks in advance

If you found a email address that is not yours as admin... and the password has been changed - YOU WERE HACKED. It's not "maybe" or "eventually"!

Your WP install has been compromised and it's not likely that a 'competitor' of yours. I never heard about comptetitors hacking blogs, they are (almost) always hackers.

And unless you take very thorough action to clean up everything and to harden your WP... it will happen again and again.

Search here, search the WP Support forum, search the online manual (WP Codex) - there are plenty of guides how to clean up after a hack.
