It's funny but you'd be surprised some of the ideas I see. I've seen a couple of "escort" directories, and adult sites can make a lot of money. I've seen some directories make a couple thousand a month, just because they got one good advertiser.

Maybe you should make a directory of early morning drinkers.

If you are talking about an article directory, then start free and wait until you have a good amount of members before you try to move to paid. If you are talking about a different type of directory let us know what type so we can advise properly.

It happens all the time and who knows, this thread could help another in the future as well. My advice remains the same. Have a free option and a paid option and give more benefits to the paid, of course. I think if you give people a chance to use the service or directory first, then they see the benefits they will be more willing to pay to be a member.

That sounds like a plan and I know of one marketer that this has worked for. I would never operate this way. Reason is that the folks who submit free listings, and folks that pay for listings are generally not the same person. Many that submit for free listings will never give you a dime for any service.

The other issue is that a well promoted directory offering free listings will get 100 to 150+ submissions/day- most of them crap. If you list crap your directory will be crap. Do you know how much time it takes to sort through 150 submissions/day, for free?

directorypress was my biggest disappointment... absolute tosh in my eyes and I also had the beta version. I asked the support what to do and they said its open source so play with the code I then said how about a refund cos its rubbish they refused..... never will I spend money with those dummies again....

I tried a joomla directory as well and that was not much cop either

  The best software is PHPLD or eSyndiCat. Both are very good. I like that PHPLD offers great support. I have 7 PHPLD, 3 eSyndiCat, and one hand-coded directories.

This is a topic of interest to me too. All the scripts I look at look like sites from the 90s. There's got to be a way of looking modern and having a directory that adds value to prospective listers. I was thinking of having a twitter for the site with tweeting and other things as value added services to go with a paid listing. Possibly doing a daily blogroll in each category so the site has fresh content to keep people interested.

I was going to say when looking at a Directory, ensure that the script works properly and that it is visually pleasing to the eye.

There is nothing more I hate then directories that are badly designed... and from personal experience- there are a ton of them.

One way to make a directory pleasing to the eye, or to avoid turning it into an eyesore, it to keep ads to a minimum. Directories do poorly when it comes to adsense. There is money to be made in pure submission revenue.

One example is www.dirmania.org. It may or may not look like to 90's, but it does not look bad. I don't even offer featured listings on this site- just straight standard listings. It is fairly popular. Site uses eSydiCat script.

There is a lot of white space and it doesn't feel cluttered which gets points in my book. Still how much do you actually make from a directory like that?

How did you start? I was lucky. Seven years ago the guy that started cannylink needed cash fast and offered me the site.

How do you get your site to rank with little or no registrants? Ranking is great but you don't need it to get submissions. What you need is customers. Since you should not count on out ranking competitors for a very long time, spend you efforts on getting a link on "directory lists" and on directory review sites. If by "no registrants" you mean no site listings, yes you need to seed the directory before you can promote it or charge for submission.

Did you start offering free spots and then moved on to paid registration? 9 of my 11 directories have been purchased. They already had a base of listings so I charged from day one. The two directories that I started from scratch were free until I felt I had enough listings to start charging.

What type of script did you use? I use PHPLD & eSyndiCat. Both are great.

Thanks for recommending phpLD. The directory industry as a whole gets thousands of submissions daily, and millions of dollars each year. There are many directory owners that get $x,xxx or even $xx,xxx in their home based businesses. Like any other business, you need to research it and think about your business plan, but there is still plenty of money to be made with the right plan.

Well, I can't change my entire existing website to match phpLD... nor do I want to try to make phpLD match my site. Personally I'd much prefer to use a Wordpress plug-in so it matches the site EXACTLY and everything works together perfectly.

We've worked with people to help them build integrations with wordpress. I think the part you may not understand about phpLD is our admin panel (login: admin / admin ) is actually bigger than wordpress itself, and has more features. It sounds like you just want some kind of a basic link listing as a plugin. I am not aware of any situations where one big application "plugs in" to another, but would love to see one if it exists (especially an apples to apples type comparison).

One of the problems is that we've already got other Wordpress plug-ins that are important to the site. For example, Gravity Forms handles our forms, and MailChimp is integrated within Gravity Forms. To kill those off and start with something new would be difficult task.

If you want to develop the paid directory, in my suggestion.... the first step that you need to do is try to find high pagerank domain (PR4, PR5 or it would be better if PR6++).

This domain pagerank will be the good things that will attract the submitter to advertise their link at your directory.

If you want to develop the article directory, you can use wordpress as the engine but if you want to develop some kinds like the link bid directory, then you can buy the PHPLD or phplinkbid script.

The most important thing you need to do is worry about content and marketing.

Any script can do the job, what you are required to do is to tweak it with a professional programmer.

You can have a paid component and handle it much like Ezine.

However no one will want to pay unless you have two of the most important things going for you link Juice and traffic.

If you can provide traffic to these people that you want to sign up then you are good.

This can be done using a separate service.

To this date there is no service that contends dealing with syndicating the correct way.

Maybe you can do this.

You however will need to get a lot of content first to get the ball rolling.

I think directory press is not very suitable.

As for phpLD, about to check it out - but if it is as big as the author/owner says it is, I don't think we'll be seeing a WP based plugin.

I think we will be seeing "something". We get so many requests, so we will be working on this. We are already working with some existing customers on straight wordpress projects (making plugins for one), and also on wordpress/phpld integrations. We just need a little more time to get something that is worth offering to everyone that is bug free and fits a variety of needs. We are making progress on that now.

I'm going to say that you first have to ask what these people want. Most likely they want real people who would be possible prospects for their business. So let's suppose you work hard to build a facebook group for your city or niche. You interlink the group and the directory. You get people participating in both. Then it's much easier to sell a listing because are dealing with real people that you can show these businesses. It's not just some scattering of links that hardly relate. If you do a good enough job building something that real people visit, you can charge way more per listing too. Good luck, and let me know if you have any more questions.

A Facebook group sounds like a great idea! Is it better to use a fanpage or a group on Facebook? Your post has got me thinking, I wonder if I could put Facebook "likes" and comments on the directory and encourage people on my group to help out with the directory? This is great, I'm really excited, I can finally start getting the ball rolling. Thanks for the advice, dvduval!

That's something I am still on the fence about too. I know a lot about directories, but still gaining knowledge on Facebook. With a group I believe you have more flexibility to add administrators to help you moderated, etc. I think Fan Pages don't offer as many options. If anyone can clear up the differences, it would be much appreciated.

(I will say personally I have seen more interactivity with groups)

It sounds like he is not trying to attract "webmasters" so much as local businesses by working with people in his area. Sometimes starting out free can have its weaknesses with local area directories, as you lose revenue that you need to get the business going.

If you can't get money from a local business, ask them for a coupon, free meal, gift certificate or other, and then give that away to your facebook group for participating on your site.

Then you a win-win situation. The business get a new lead, and your website gets more attention from a happy user.
