I have seen some people offering $1 per article on odesk for 300-400 words.

has anyone used them before? Would the articles be good quality for that level? As in good enough to submit to a network like BMR or postrunner?

It depends on the contractor. I currently have three different writers engaged at oDesk, but I narrowed them down from a list of dozens more.

Ditto with Steve. I've found plenty of good writers at that price and plenty of awful writers charging a lot more!

It depends on the writer and where he or she is from. I have found it is better to simply pay a good, native English speaker a higher rate than it is to pay someone speaking English as a second language a lower rate and then find the quality is poor.

That said, you CAN find good writers for a low rate. I recommend assigning small test projects so that you can make sure the quality is what you are looking for. I once worked with a writer from the Philippines who got a perfect score on the writing section of the SAT. Aside from some dialect and slang issues, he was phenomenal!

I too have found several writers on oDesk where I pay about $1.25 an article (400 -500 words). It was not easy for me though- for each person, I had to go through hiring several people before I ffind a good writer at an affordable price.

I like oDesk over other places because you can try out resources with small fixed rate projects or a fixed hourly project first.

The one downside with oDesk is that over time as a resource builds reputation, their rates get higher and sometimes they will just stop working for you- no communication nothing. I have found this and learned that some of the them are embarassed to ask for a raise - they would rather just start anew with a project with a new employer at a higher rate.

I communicate with my long term contractors and try to build some rapport - and I also give small bonuses for those who are still working with me every 3 months- this helps keep the good ones working for you which is worth it to me . . . .

Never compromise on quality for a few dollars (Seriously, have seen people buy such stuff and weep later for G penalty), always opt for native speakers

I vehemently disagree. If you don't take the right approach then yes, you will probably get crappy results. After some time spent mucking about, I finally developed a 3-step process that ensures high quality, low-cost articles from oDesk.

Yeah, if you just post a job that says "I need 10 articles" and you post a pay rate of $10 for the job, you're probably not going to get the type of result you're hoping for.

Is there any way you could talk a little about your 3-step process?

Of course!! I would actually hire them to write my doctor's thesis...

Edit: On a serious side note...for submitting to blog networks they sure should be ok, but i personally would only submit spun articles.

I check the profiles and feedback for each writer that replies to my job post at Odesk and go from there. Usually you can find someone who has excellent feedback and credentials and will write articles for you for $1-$3. You may have to try a few before you find a really good one but it is definately worth it and can be done cheaply. Once you have a successful transaction with them through Odesk you can deal privately which saves you from having to pay the Odesk fee each time. But if you like their work and want to keep them, add this fee amount to what you pay them via paypal etc. as it will show you care.

I believe that Odesk is the worst website online and I don’t know how they are still allowed to work the way they do. They are real thieves. I had a terrible experience with this site when I was looking for a webmaster. They don’t respect their customers, and the people who work there are not professionals, but amateurs.

I also tried to find an editor for my articles there in the beginning of my adventures online, and in the end I couldn’t find any who could be really trusted.

Odesk is a solution only if you want to offer your services and work there. They accept anyone, even though they pretend to test their skills.

However, you should never buy anything from Odesk. Don’t trust their sellers. They will abandon you in the middle of a project, or they will ask for payment only because they worked on your project, even when you are not satisfied with their work. Odesk won’t protect you, but oblige you to pay for services you dislike. They are totally unfair. You have no protection as a customer.

yes, for $1-$1.25 per 400-500 words article is only good for newbies...if you want a good quality article you must pay more than that...good writers and experienced writers do have a higher rate and are also looking for good sites and clients that can pay them worth the articles they are writing...

Well honestly I'm a writer and I'm in this field for the last 1 and half years. Almost 8-9 months ago I wanted to outsource some projects to increase my income and I went to oDesk and Freelancer to hire some writers with a cheap rate. I got plenty of new writers and I was happy at the beginning. But just after 1-2 weeks they started to provide me crap and it was like I was sitting almost 16-17 hours a day to edit their articles just to get my client satisfied. In my personal opinion not a single professional writer is going to accept this rate and will work for a long term. For me - NEVER ..

In the Philippines, $2.00 /per hour is a pretty good wage. If a good article writer can write 2 articles an hour, they are starting out fairly well.

And it may be only a start. This may be someone just beginning with oDesk and is trying to building their ratings. That's just smart marketing.

May I recommend that you take a chance with 5 bucks and see for yourself.

I use Odesk and the same contractor all the time "RICO" to do all my articles.

$5 for 500 words he charges and always SEO optimized.

    Always does a good Job
