GODADDY Domain & Hostgator Hosting -help...

Alright, so before I register this sweet domain (it's a TLD for which the .com version is going for 10,200$...), I was wondering how and what to do in order to have this domain hosted by my hostgator account.
Also, do I need to build a website for this domain? Can I simply have a domain website, without actual content...?
A little help would be great (quick help even better), as I want to register this sucka and hopefully resell it quickly.

Regards,
wanna-succeed

P.S Once I register it, I'll tell you all what it is.

What are you planning to do with the domain? Just redirect with an affiliate link? Put up a blog? Make a squeeze page?

You only need hosting if you are creating an actual site for it.

      hmm....good question...
      Those are good possibilities.
That keyword gets almost 20K searches a month. I think I might sell the domain to someone, although I don't know how to approach such things.
I was thinking of someone helping me do this for a commission, but I'm scared to get boned/scammed/ripped off...
So, to be clear guys, all I need to do is register the domain, thats is? It's then mine? No one can get their greedy fingers on it? With or without a website?

Yes. For the time being, provided the name is not trademarked or anything like that - you can just register it and it can sit in your godaddy account until you have a plan for it.

You may want to look into domaining - where you can just sell/auction the domain as is, or building a site on it so you can flip the whole thing - which can add value if a site is there, and even more value if you have figured out a way to monetize the site and have kept proof of profits.

          Hmm... let's think shall we?
Every domain started at 10$.... It's what you do with is that counts.
And if another TLD of the same domain is selling for over 10K$, I would venture to say it's worth something. Maybe not 10K$, maybe not 5k$, heck maybe not even 2K$, but it's probably worth something hefty, for the right person.

Have you ever heard of trademarks?
No? -Learn: Trademark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It has a section even about the domain names...

if you buy nikon.org or something like that (this is an example) - Nikon's lawyers will kick your butt until you hand them over the domain

If you just register it at GoDaddy and don't point it anywhere, it will just show a parked page. If you want to create a site for it on your hosting, you will need to add the nameservers of your host (eg - ns1.nameserveraddress.com, etc) and then add it as a addon domain in your control panel, then setup a site for it.

Just FYI: if you are looking/searching/checking for that "dream" domain of yours at godaddy... and you don't buy it immediately when you find it - GD will register it and will attempt to sell you for a few hundreds, LOL

(it won't be the first case!)

Yep, if you searched on godaddy, it's probably already gone.

If not and you really want it, then snag it.

One thing - you say the .com version is selling for $10k... did it SELL, or is it selling?

I can put a 1974 Ford Pinto up for sale for $38,500, but doubt I'll get many takers on it.

It's ok if you want to pursue domains - there are lots of smart people here that can help you with them.

HOWEVER, it seems that you really aren't that interested in domains, just looking for a "score". We all want those, but try to focus on building a solid business with reliable income, not be scattered all over if you can.

Not lecturing, just trying to encourage.

      All success,

      Gary

Glad you can enjoy my comments. Funny thing is the domains have already been purchased, before I wrote the comment, hence the blue smiley....

    LOL!

Well, glad you were able to snag the domains before GoDaddy did! You've gotten some very good advice from other Warriors.

If I were you, I would wait to see what the other domain actually sells for before you spend the money you have not yet gotten for the domain. Don't go shopping yet for a new car!

In other words, don't get too excited yet about your prospects. You have to compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. If the other domain sells for a good chunk of money and you want to get the same or better for yours, you better make your site comparable to that one. If the other site has a lot of content and/or is monetized and making money, you need to build your site up to that level to better position yourself.

Otherwise, you can post your domain on that auction site immediately after the other domain sells to see if some of the other bidders may be interested in owning that domain name so they can build out the site however they choose to.

I wish you the best with it.

That wasn't too bad, although I'm waiting to see what londonwarrior has to say.
He also said he'd make a bid....should be fun.

Shux, I really wanted to give it to you for free...I guess it'll go to auction... I'll let you know if something happens.

  • Hi,

When you sign up at hostgator they will give you nameserver information for you to input for your domain. If godaddy is the domain provider, you will go to your domain name control panel and input the name server info provided by HG. That's all there is to it.

  • All you have to do is change your DNS setting to point to hostgator.

If you are going to sell it, i wouldt spend too much time building it, unless youre going to bring it to the top, then sell it. Then I would do WP and build content, and the likes.
