I think you're absolutely right, it's on it's last legs. I amazed that it has managed to hold on for so long. It's horribly clunky and old fashioned too.

I used it for a about 5 minutes once and realised very quickly, I didn't want to be wasting my time.

Still at one point, like Facebook today, it was huge. Could FB make the same mistake?

I guess that Twitter is also losing its power. It’s not everyone’s favorite social networking site like it was 2 years ago. Twitter has too many spammers. Everyone there is a seller promoting something.

Now I open my page and I see many people I don’t know because I felt obliged to follow many people who were following me (like everybody else) and now there is nothing interesting for me there. I simply post my article’s links and I close the page. In the past I used to really follow a few people’s posts, but now I can’t find them among so many new followers I started supposedly following too, and I have no time or disposition to look for anyone.

I believe that only Facebook always survives because it’s a social networking site that protects its users from spam.

Actually, Twitter is better than ever, more valuable than anyone realized, and becoming the de facto standard for the worlds most important news and insider information. I too was down on twitter for a while, but careful following and pushing quality info makes a big difference.

If there was another "new" site out there with 45 million users, an Alexa traffic rank of 62 worldwide (36 USA), and just about ignored by most marketers we would be seeing WSO's on how to cash in on this "secret and untapped" market.

Maybe now it's time to get in there and clean up when every other IM'er is on Facebook. Hmm.

I doubt Rupert Murdoch will keep it along much longer though.

haha its so funny I logged onto my myspace just this morning to see What was going on, I was lost! Didn't know what in the world I was doing, then I started getting a TON of emails from them. Its a way of the past, too clutter and it loads extremely slow

I didn't realize 45 million monthly visitors was the same as zero daily visitors. Perspective, people.

From an end user's point of view though, I have never understood the appeal of Myspace. Ugly, clunky, not user friendly, slow, browser conflicts, etc, etc ,etc. Basically, it is/was a nightmare.

500000 visitors a month divided by 2000lbs(1 ton) = 250lbs each visitor!

40 million users a month is still more than 80x what I see in one year or 960x more than I see in a month...

So how do you figure it is time to throw in the towel and walk away?

If I had an account there, I'd be happy taking up your slack...

By most standard, down by nearly 50% is bad, but it looks to me to still be a worthy source of traffic if you can figure out how to get some of it for yourself.

ok, so lets say you get 90% of 40 million users. Having 35 million Jr Highers will net you about $9.95 a year, plus marketing expenses. So sure the number sounds impressive, but the MySpace audience is mostly a bunch of kids looking for their next free Justin Bieber poster.

Partly I think some of the decline to MySpace is due to the new layout which lags computers and people really don't want to deal with it. I used to be a big fan of MySpace but after the layout change I can't even get on without a wait time of 5 minutes or more just because the "new features". Because of the creators brilliant idea to improve the social community he actually down graded and screwed up reliability.

The growth of FB indicates what people want, and how they like it.

IMHO MySpace can be cumbersome to use, and when I first joined I found it too much work and too fiddly to set things up.

The stats shared by various ones on this page reveal that MySpace will be a thing of the past and going fast compared to FB--although I must admit, it's not so easy to post music on FB at the moment, but I'm sure that will change soon.

What do you all think was the real downfall?

For me I think it was two things:
- Facebook Apps
- What seemed to be innovative in letting users design their own pages, turned out to be highly annoying and made Facebook feel calmer and more appealing...

Maybe I don't want to listen to my old high school buddy's favorite song when I've got grooveshark in the background playing my favorite tunes!

MySpace started to die out and did die out a couple years back.
Those 30 million+ prob all converted to Facebook. And prob a good percentage of the 45 million+ have a Facebook as well.

Considering that all the unique visitors have an account.
Facebook took over; the end.

BTW; do you happen to have a chart including years back? Interested to see which year(s) they prospected the most. [Probably before Facebook was introduced]

I haven't logged on to myspace in at least a year.

To me, Facebook & Twitter were much more user friendly than myspace. The guys who sold it were smart to get out when they did!

It’s really a big irony. A few years ago MySpace seemed to be invincible.

I have the impression that Twitter won’t be able to keep a top position for long. Facebook seems to be more resistant because it’s older, it gets more traffic than Google, many sites use Facebook Connect, and it’s a social networking site that protects its users’ privacy.

However, when Twitter first appeared online and everyone was using it with enthusiasm, Facebook was quite abandoned too.

Social networking sites have an ephemeral life.

It's probably highly likely that Facebook will eventually die. The reality is, things come and go all the time.

When I think back to when I first got the internet at home in 1998, the things that were popular then - Yahoo Chat and ICQ. I don't think anybody uses them anymore. At the time they were considered revolutionary though.

Also, anyone remember Usenet Newsgroups? I used them a LOT around 1999-2002, but I haven't been anywhere near one for a very long time.

Even Google has only been around for 12 years. Who knows where the future really lies for the internet. New technologies will emerge that will completely wipe out most of what we are familiar with now.

You have to remember, just how far the internet has come in such a short time. How far is it going to go in the next 20 years? Things will probably be very different.

There are probably kids growing up now, that think that Facebook is just normal, the same way I grew up thinking landline telephones and VHS video cassettes were normal.

Whatever you think is standard now, will be obsolete in only a few years time.

If Facebook doesn't die, it will probably get taken over by another company, and rebranded to something else.

Maybe one day it will come full circle, and we will all realise that it's actually better just to talk to each other face-to-face...

I remember a time when you'd suggest to contacts that you should get together via myspace. Now it's all 'what's your FB name?'

I loved myspace for the music, found some glorious unsigned stuff which I never would have heard without myspace, and it's the bands keeping it going now.

You can still see some serious ad spend by companies there, that must say something.

I think it's fascinating - remember Friends Reunited? They were done in by the spectre of charging.

Yea I think myspace has been collapsing a while - they had way too mug spam and then Facebook came and took over at the right time - without all of the spam. They just clearly outdid myspace and they did it at the perfect time.
