First Time Domain Auction - Any Tips?

Hey Guys,
I'm going to list a couple domains on GoDaddy (is there such a feature at hostgator?), and I was hoping you could give me a few pointers. There are so many options, they seem to offer so many incentives, little perks etc... for around 10-20$....Do they help at all?

Also, since I have enver transferred a domain, could someone please guide me through it? I don't see a tutorial on GoDaddy...

These are the domain names I am going to auction off:

1) harrypotteronlinegames.net
2) newyorkdiamond.org
3) newyorkdiamonds.org ---> I value this one the most - .com version for sale for 10,200$...

There are several options, what would you go for?

offer/counter offer
offer/counter offer with buy now only
buy now only
7 day public autcion

Any thoughts on what I should list them for?

I also noticed they offer expert appraisals for domains....is that just another way for them to squeeze more money out of people? Or have you found that feature to be of aid in these situations?

I also moved the 2 diamond domains to hostgator (pointed them to my name servers). They still appear on GoDaddy account, does that mean I can sell them there?

Please comment only if you have knowledge and expertise in this area. Lots of people simply throw stuff out without really knowing.

Thanks,
wanna-succeed

Well to be honest, Godaddy is a hard place to sell on unless you have a real nice name. I mean you could sell the name for a low price with a low BIN or a low reserve in a 7day auction but I assume you want the most out of your names right?? Yea... so what I do is market to end users(people who use them for their own websites). I do have listings on Godaddy but never get any offers. I only sell through end users and it is the best way to do it. If you insist on Godaddy, I would do a 7-day auction but you probably won't get much out of it.

By the way, just because the .com version is for sale for that amount doesn't mean it is worth that much. Check names that have actually sold. I could list any domain for sale for millions but it wouldnt actually sell...

You're absolutely right, I find from experience that I've pretty much always had the highest offers from the end users, instead of an intermediary marketplace like Godaddy or Flippa.

Of course, it's not going to be as easy as just listing your domain in a marketplace, you'll have to spend some time contacting prospects - website owners or offline businesses that are a good fit for your domain name. You'll typically have to negotiate and go back and forth with them, and often have to speak on the phone (I find that I've had the greatest success when I take this offline and actually talk to them). While this may be more difficult than just listing your domain somewhere, I have no doubt that you'll get a higher price for it by doing this.

I wouldn't sell on GoDaddy, though I've not done it before. Their marketplace is horrible to navigate and I doubt many people will even see your listing, much less pay you what it's worth.

If your domains are really that valuable, consider listing them on flippa. You get the opportunity to set up a sales page and provide more information about your domain, such as traffic stats, earnings, potential, etc., and their system allows you to promote the auction within the site by highlighting the listing, adding screencaps of the pages, tweeting via Flippa's twitter account, featuring on the front page, etc., etc. It's just a better marketplace to sell websites.

As far as transferring the domain, if the person making the purchase has a GoDaddy account, you simply need to do an "Account Change" (Moving a Domain Name out of Your Account - Search the Go Daddy Help Center). If the person buying the domain doesn't have a GoDaddy account and doesn't want to get one, you just need to transfer the domain away from GoDaddy (Transferring Domain Names to Another Registrar - Search the Go Daddy Help Center). It's really easy once you've done it, usually goes through in couple of hours/minutes, depending on how you're transferring. Also, it makes no difference what nameservers you're using, you'll still have to do one of the above two procedures to transfer domains registered through GoDaddy.

Hostgator does not deal in domains .... if i am wrong someone please correct .

As for where to sell I would also recommend Flippa or SEDO both are good places but for sedo i would advise featuring your listing if you can afford it and if you believe your domain is worth it.

Also do not be fooled by those premium prices on godaddy as they are paid listings.

My suggestion is to go for auction based domain names because it help you to find your website easily in search engines.
