amazon affiliate plan

Hi warriors!

I am reading some topics which show the experience of Amazon affiliates that earn 1000 or more dollars per month.

But how it is possible?

For example:
500 visitors per month (from longtail buying keywords)
CTR 30%
Conversion rate 8%
Commission per sale 4.2 dollars (6% on $70 product)
I will earn 50.4 dollars per month.

Where is the mistake?

Thanks,
Marco.

You have more than one site... so, say you have 20 such sites... there's your answer.

Plus, once you get good at it, you can streamline the process, and outsource the time consuming stuff.

For starters, 500 visitors per month isn't going to earn you much of anything. I receive that many visitors PER DAY via my Web 2.0 properties alone.

Secondly, I only promote products that sell for over $300.

Thirdly, my commissions routinely hit at least 7% due to volume.

Yes, I think you'll want to looking at at least 1000 per month.

I think with the right product choice, you can make ok money, if you have enough of these sites up.

@ wolfmmiii, what do you mean by, Web 2.0 properties?

500 a day, with a $300 product... You must be making some good money.

        I do OK

Web 2.0 = Squidoo, Blogspot, HubPages, etc

Keep in mind that those are 500 visitors (not buyers). Only a fraction click through an affiliate link and then only a fraction of those convert.

Most products are over $500 but my conversion rates are below average due to the high costs.

I use squidoo and hubpages also... I find that these pages outrank my main site all the time, is this normal.

I have an exact match keyword .com, and the on page seo is perfect.

Is it best to drive people to my hubpage or squidoo lense, and hope to get traffic to my main site from them?

There's nothing wrong with the Web 2.0 properties outranking your site as long as they are properly monetized.

As for EMD, I don't use them.

I had a lady contact me a few years ago about promoting her website. She had spent $20,000 USD so far on having someone build her a nice website. She had a farm, and wanted to sell seeds for 50 cents per packet on the internet.

So I said, "Do you realize it will take 40,000 sales before you make your money back on what you've spent so far?

Another lady had a website about "Angels" however she misspelled the domain name: "Angles".

LOL - Just like any business, you need a plan.

Not necessarily true. If you target the right keywords you can get way less than 500 visitors in a month and still do very well.

For example I target some very good buying keywords on my amazon sites and I typically get around 10 visitors per day and yet I still make sales almost every day from those 10 visitors, so if you choose the right keywords you are golden.

I am seeing this with my very new amazon sites. 10-20 visitors a day on most of my sites yet this past week I am getting orders everyday. I have about 10 sites up right now and really haven't even done any real backlinking.

Living off of a good domain, good on page SEO, some social bookmarking, ,maybe a hubpage or two and the Automatic backlink creator plugin. I have one more domain to launch before i start sinking real time and money into backlinks to rank the sites, but long tail product name searches are getting me traffic, click thru's, and sales already.

I will say this however i do have one site that sells a high demand low cost accessory for a very popular tech product and I am using that to increase my volume and commission %, it is working well so far.

Anyway with good site layout, good reviews, a 10 visitor a day site can make your money.

So you're just getting your sites ranked with good on page seo, strong domain name and some social bookmarking?

Must be some very low competition?

I've done the same, and my sites hovering around serp 80... while my hubpage is serp 8?

The top results are ehow pages... I thought my main site would be doing better by now.

Hi cweber. How do you drive traffic with these keywords?

I take it you have your main keyphrase, and a list of other popular keywords.

Do you just use these in on page SEO, or do you make hubpages, articles etc with them?

        Cheers.

When it comes to Amazon, it is best to target expensive products above $200 or more would be better. This way, you will earn more for the same amount of time and effort that you spend. Unless if the cheap products are really high in demand which in most case you will also encounter massive competition problem.

yea... but like i said, the question in that particular context is impossible to answer.

if you had intelligence on what the product was, it's target audience, it's value (and perceived value), your commission etc etc etc you might be able to work out a rough estimate.

without that information, you're stabbing in the dark.

If you don't mind me offering some unsolicited advice here ... what will cause you to learn MORE answers FASTER is to get out there and ...

      wait for it ...

      BUILD SOME SITES !!

You'll learn how to do it. You'll see what kind of SEO results you get based on your own backlinking work, and you'll see what kind of click through rate you're achieving (and sales).

You'll be paid to learn. You can still ask questions here but just start DOING it also.

    Hi Marco,

The reality is that unrelated sales (from the 24 hour cookie) will make up a good percentage of your sales. I wish I could tell you what exact effect it is on your percentages but the unrelated sales run across the board.

One thing you are definitely forgetting is all of the unrelated sales. Much of what I sell on Amazon has nothing to do with what I'm promoting. Now, a lot of this is just filler stuff, but it does add up and it helps you reach the higher commission tiers. People love buying tons of stuff from Amazon. (I know I do. But don't buy cat food and a laptop in the same order session. They'll pack the two things in the same box. My cat is now obsessed with my new computer).

A single site wont make much of that thousand dollars unless they are promoting a very high-end product. Just like adsense sites, amazon review sites are a numbers game. Make more sites to increase your income.

And how do you drive traffic to all these sites, hubpages, lenses. etc?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3558962].message }}
  • Depends how good your reviews are. Currently I've had 27 visitors and 24 clicked to amazon, so somewhere around 80-90%

Conversion is around 10%. All social bookmarking visitors. My first run delivered High 90's click-through rate to Amazon but no purchases (24 visits), days later people must have added the products to cart because I've now converted 10% of those. Atleast that's what Google Analytics say.. 27 Unique Visits, and I had 24 unique clicks to Amazon.

Probably extreme luck. But when creating your Review sites I think you should make them with the hope that they have a CTR of 50% with a 10% conversion.

With 500 visitors and those stats, promoting a 70 dollar product you could earn roughly 105 dollars.

I think a good first goal for traffic is the 2.5-5k mark. Between 100-200 visits per day. And I think that goal should be expected after 2-3 months.

With one website and in that time frame you could make between 600-1200 dollars. Going by my stats, or the stats of others who have openly told me what their CTRs are like.

Obviously this isn't going to be anything like yours, but these are my expectations based on my own tests and research.

Ignore the whole, "only promote high-ticket products" - Because the smaller items have good search volumes too and promoting them with one single site you can still make 4 figures a month.

And when I say smaller items I'm talking between 50-100 dollars. I have a big interest in some of the items I'm currently promoting, should I not promote them because of the price? Even though the search volumes of all my keywords reach in excess of 300 k searches per month?

I wish I could figure out why the hell none of my amazon visitors aren't converting. I've had over 400 clicks through to amazon and not a single sale. The traffic is targeted... <product> reviews. The reviews are fairly decent... about 600-1200 words and information from a number of different sources.

Even the click through rate from my site is fairly high. I just can't get amazon to convert them once they get there.

Without asking what the niche is, where would you buy that product?

For example, if you did the most wonderful Amazon Affiliate site on the Internet to sell soap, and had thousands of visitors a day - you probably couldn't earn the cost of the domain.

Because everyone buys soap at the grocery store...

I can't imagine having 400 clicks with no sales... it's rather unusual for me to have even 40 clicks without a sale.

But the items that I put up Amazon Affiliate sites for - aren't generally available for purchase locally, or if they are, the variety is severely limited.

        Just a thought...

Thanks for the reply. Not sure what CTA is?

Yes and no. The images link to amazon and in the review I have a text link with the product name as anchor but at the end of the review my anchor text states that they're going to amazon.

It's something that I would personally buy wherever it was cheapest... either a store or online. It's something that is available both in stores and on the net.

My main site is in a niche of kitchen appliances, ranging from $50 - $300 depending on the brand.

I could understand not getting a sale in the first 100 or so clicks but up to 400 and not even an unrelated sale seems odd to me.

The actual site is only getting about 15-20 hits a day at the moment. Roughly 7 or 8 from search engines targeting buying keywords.... <Product type> reviews

I'm starting to worry that I may have overlooked something that might be causing the problem.

I don't mask my links but I use a plugin that localizes the links based on the persons locations. I'm a member of US, CA & UK associate program and most of my clicks seem to come from Canada.

  • So in your actual Amazon Associates account it says, 400 unique clicks and no sales?

If so, you've had the worst luck I've ever heard of. Even at a lower converting rate that should have netted you at least 8-12 sales.

How many clicks to amazon per day are you getting ?

      Yeah, it seems really strange.

Here are the results from each program:

Unique Visitors (From start of the year to now):

      US: 88
      CA: 254
      UK: 36

      Total: 378

It's hard to give a good clicks per day figure as the sites really only ranked well in the past 3 weeks or so.

I could understand if I'd made some sort of mistake with my affiliate link or something. But the fact that it's showing that I've had that many unique visitors click through would suggest that there's nothing wrong with my links.

It just seems like the traffic I send there isn't buying anything.

And it's not like it's just random traffic going through my site. I have google analytics installed and I know the majority of people are searching for targeted buying keywords in google.

Is there anything that could skew these results? Like spiders crawling the affiliate links or something?

Yeah, I have to agree with Jason that I'm very surprised you haven't made any sales. I initially thought that maybe there was a lot of click-thrus to Amazon because people thought the link would lead them to more information, not Amazon.

Does the product have poor reviews? I once had a site with a great CTR but poor conversions because some of the reviews were really negative (that wasn't the case when I first created the site).

Some sites just don't convert well despite good traffic.

Okay, yeah most of the calls to action don't specifically state it's an amazon link but the ones at the bottom of the reviews do.

The reviews at amazon for most of the products I review are pretty positive. 4 stars or higher.

Something strange must be happening though. I just checked analytics and I've had 400 uniques to my site this year with 378 unique clicks to amazon. Doesn't really add up as 378 is far too many clicks for only 400 visitors.

Not totally un-heard of I got 412 clicks and 6 purchase and I have $5.47 in my account right now, can't even buy lunch with that kind of money. Also, do anyone know if Amazon count when you click on your own link? When I create a review site I always click the link to ensure it links correctly to my affiliate ID. Also, is there a way track which site the clicks are coming from? I know adsense you can create channels but can't find that option in amazon.

Amazon purchases rank among the highest on the internet! Definitely a great option to check out, easy to set up and easy to understand the buyer too

When promoting your Amazon affiliate sites, put the product links in prominent locations to increase click through rates, then market it by doing social bookmarks, directory submissions, and backlinking the heck out of it. Outsource and repeat the process till your income reaches the desired level. That's pretty much how you do it.

I'm not aware of your current sales technique, but you may be pushing too hard with the ads. Since you mentioned quite a few clicks without sales, I would certainly take another look at what products you are promoting. As others have said, you could be promoting a product with bad reviews.

You may also be selecting the wrong product. I always do a bit of research as if I was going to buy the product myself. This way I know who has it for the best price, which product is the best deal and what features are important. When you put a bit of thought and effort into your sites, I find that it makes a world of a difference.

Hogre, there are 2 link localizer plugins, testing both so don't know which is best.
    * Amazon Affiliate Link Localizer - which is what most people use
    * Wordpress Amazon Associate
Note that you will need to register individually with each country and get a tracking ID.

      Tom
Id be interested to know which one is best.

Ive used the Amazon affiliate link localizer plugin but in Internet Explorer when i view the site it shows an error in the bottom left corner with an exclamation mark.

When i double click it, it says google.loader.ClientLocationAddress' is null or not an object

Is anyone else getting this error? I don't know what is causing it or whether it effects the functionality of the plugin.

    emarketmedia,

I have an idea that no one has really touched upon.

On one of my blog posts I mention the fact that a goal of mine (among others) was to create 25 niche sites by the end of the year. Pretty lofty, I know.

I am now starting to realize that that particular goal might not be very smart.

I have a niche site that ranks #1 for two keywords I am targeting. After I hit number one for the first keyword, I was all ready to move on to the next site to develop.

Shortly after hitting number one for my term I read a blog post that basically explained that you should focus on ranking as high as you possibly can for every relevant term on every page of your niche site, maximizing the earnings potential of the site before moving on from that site. This turned out to be very good advice.

So I worked on term number two and hit #1 for that keyword as well. Now I am on to Keywords 3, 4, 5, 6 and so on.

The point I am trying to make is if your conversion numbers are to be used as an example all you need to do is grow your niche site to 10,000 visitors a month. Doing so will get you to $1000 a month, based on your example.

My advice is to focus on ONE site, not a bunch, like I was going to try. Instead, it might make sense to try and rank as high as you can for every relevant term on your site before moving on to the next project.

And yes, as you increase the number of Amazon sales your commission rate will increase. I'm only going off of the raw data from the example.

    Good luck.

Hi dhigler, very interesting approach. My plan is the same as your old plan. I have registered 6 .coms, I've set up 3 and am SEOing them.

How are you SEOing the other keywords, on page SEO or off page?

And what works best for you, article marketing, hub pages, backlining specific pages... would be great to get some feedback on this.

      Cheers.

  • Short answer is

    A) You definitely have to have multiple sites, and you should have them properly monetized. Not just with Amazon links, but also with Adsense and other avenues.

    B) 500 visitors a month is not going to cut it. That just really demonstrates poor keyword research on the front end. For most of my amazon sites I get 300 visitors a day. Again, it's all about being SMART.

First one is wrong, you don't need Adsense, and you don't need multiple sites. You could use one site in one niche covering a broad amount of products and use its pages to rank for terms.

Adsense makes a site look ugly and I frown upon using it on Amazon Review sites. I don't think it's wrong, but I don't think its smart either - Much rather put a list up.

Hey guys, can someone please explain to me the best method to rank individual keywords?

Say I find 5 keywords i want to use. Do I concentrate on each one, individually, make a page with good on page SEO for it. Then do the usual backlinks for the page, and social bookmarks, articles etc...

Or, do I use multiple keywords in one page?

        Cheers.

Depends if they relate, or if they are multiple variations of the same keyword.

IF it's the latter, then you can get away with one page. If the former then best using individual pages.

500 visitors per month (from longtail buying keywords)
    CTR 30%
    Conversion rate 8%
Commission per sale 4.2 dollars (6% on $70 product)
I will earn 50.4 dollars per month.

    Where is the mistake?

    Thanks,

I think it all depends where your traffic is coming from as well. Think of it as selling hamburgers to hungry people. If they want what you are offering them, then you will make loads of sales. If not, it will be a little trickier. It's all about getting targeted traffic in my opinion.

You gotta love Amazon though. Yesterday someone bought a $700 product from my site, and then went on to spend another $100 on accessories for it.

There is another thread called "Amazon Affiliates - are you seriously making money?" that asks the same question you are and it has a ton of replies.
Sorry I'm not able to show the link on my comment for some reason it won't work on my iphone which I'm using right now.

For starters, it would be good to start around $100 and then look for higher price once the profit starts coming in.

That can only be a good thing. You probably won't have a massive amount of affiliate competition - I wish I could speak/write another European language well enough to sell to that market.

But a lot of products into Amazon Italia don't have reviews.. this aspect influence the conversion rate and makes amazon unprofitable?

Back to the original question, I used to have an auto blog set up on one of my Amazon sites and I would average 600 Amazon unique clicks a month, and no conversions. I switched off the auto blog and now I get way less clicks (200 ave), but I have started to convert...go figure...

You have to sell big ticket items. $300 minimum product price
has been mentioned in this thread. You need to drive volume
with lower ticket items to get a higher percentage payout.
